Ideas for an outdoor portrait photo shoot. Artistic photo sessions in the studio. Flower theme. Photo shoot on the move

Publication date: 24.08.2016

Today I want to talk about my studio work and take as an example one of the topics that is very popular with my clients.

I’ll say right away that most often I shoot in professional studios. Firstly, it is very convenient. Everything is there necessary equipment: lights, backgrounds, attachments, softboxes... Secondly, now there is such a huge selection of studios that you can choose interiors to suit any style of photo shoot. Thirdly, in the studio you can take great shots regardless of the weather. This is very important nuance in commercial filming, because they are planned for a specific day.

The topic of studio shooting is very broad, and I decided to use my “flower” photo shoots as the basis for this article.

NIKON D800 / 70.0-200.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 400, F3.5, 1/125 s, 116.0 mm equiv.

The first and probably the most important and creative stage is creating a concept for a photo shoot. I try to make every shoot individual, original and interesting. I don’t want to copy what has already happened somewhere, or even repeat myself. But what to do if there is a lot of filming and your imagination is still not unlimited? :)

For myself, I have identified several main topics for filming, in each of which you can create different images. One of these themes is floral.

NIKON D800 / 70.0-200.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 160, F7.1, 1/200 s, 70.0 mm equiv.

So how do we create the concept and prepare for the shoot?

It is very important to capture the mood of the model. At the beginning of communication with the client, I ask them to tell about their preferences, send photos that they like, and describe all their wishes.

With flowers you can shoot any image: light, feminine and light, dark, mysterious and even gothic. This could be a fashion or beauty shoot.

At the preparation stage, we carefully work out the model’s image, and in the studio we recreate it. Sometimes during a photo shoot the image changes several times: sometimes radically, sometimes only slightly supplemented with new details. Therefore, the studio always employs professionals who can change makeup and hairstyles.

First, I determine how ready the model itself is to change, to enter into some role. Some people want to perform in an image that is unusual for them, others want to show themselves. Both are very interesting.

Every girl has her favorite flowers. And first of all, you need to take into account the tastes of the model. A beautiful bouquet of your favorite peonies, for example, will already set the mood for the shoot. And it’s easier to select images for certain colors. If these are the same peonies, ranunculi or wildflowers, then these are probably delicate tones in clothes and makeup, lightness in the interior, natural, perhaps a little careless hairstyle. If there are lilies, feces or exotic plants, then the image can be more refined and unusual. For example, in clothes you can use designer fabrics that will complement the theme of flowers in the frame, you can think of a spectacular hairstyle, and decorate your hair with fresh flowers.

Remember the paintings of Frida Kahlo, many of which are based on just such interesting flower arrangements. I also recommend looking to the fantastic work of photographer Ryan Tandue for inspiration. Many of his projects are “floral” photo shoots, where you can see how fabrics, textures and fresh flowers are exquisitely combined.

NIKON D800 SETTINGS: ISO 100, F2.2, 1/160 s, 50.0 mm equiv.

In my photo project with Anastasia Stotskaya, we took several completely different images, each of which was created by professionals: stylists, makeup artists, hairdressers. In such a complex image, each flower has its own, strictly defined place.

By the way, it is very effective to work with professional florists, who not only create the image of the model, but also think through the background. Any such shooting will look professional, expensive, and will certainly decorate the photographer’s portfolio.

Of course, in addition to correctly selected colors, you need to correctly create the image of the model itself: choose a dress, accessories, makeup, and hairstyle.

Here are examples of photos taken in a studio with natural light. The images turned out to be very light and feminine. Here I used two lenses: NIKKOR AF 85 mm 1:1.4D and 50 mm 1:1.4. They have a high aperture ratio, which is very important when shooting with natural light indoors, and also provide excellent sharpness at an open aperture.

NIKON D800 / 70.0-200.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 320, F2.8, 1/100 s, 70.0 mm equiv.

There was a lot of color correction work done in post-production. I practically leveled out all the shades, focusing only on Anastasia’s colors and hair. In Photoshop I removed the color of the wall and dress. They are practically colorless. Toned down the skin tone. As a result, the photos turned out very tender.

It is very important how professionally the model herself entered into the image. Nastya was very easy to work with. She is a professional actress and knows how to behave on camera. For a photographer, this is, of course, luck. But most often girls come to me without experience in posing, so it is very important to find a common language with the model: to feel her mood, try to liberate her.

Another the most important moment- this is the quality of the photographs. I work only with large format printing in mind. I always keep in mind the idea that some work might end up in a magazine or be presented at an exhibition. I use a 36 megapixel Nikon D800 camera for studio shooting. Its highest resolution opens up wide possibilities for photo editing. I also appreciate its wide dynamic range, which allows it to effectively work with shadows in the frame.

NIKON D800 / 28.0 mm f/1.8 SETTINGS: ISO 320, F2, 1/200 s, 28.0 mm equiv.

The next image is very similar to the previous one, but still it has its own zest and a slightly different mood. This is a series with cotton. Literally one branch was enough here. We have selected a beautiful dress in ethnic style. The result was a very unusual image.

NIKON D800 SETTINGS: ISO 800, F2.8, 1/100 s, 75.0 mm equiv.

And here I worked a little more in Photoshop and applied collage elements. I photographed the cotton branch separately in advance to place it in the frame later, added snow, and changed the background a little.

NIKON D800 / 28.0-75.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 640, F2.8, 1/100 s, 75.0 mm equiv.

I shot with an open aperture so that the background was a little blurred; at the post-processing stage I easily replaced it with a similar texture and shade, but even more neutral. Here are before and after examples artistic treatment in Photoshop.

NIKON D800 / 28.0-75.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 640, F2.8, 1/100 s, 75.0 mm equiv.

But here is a completely different image from the same shoot, where monstera leaves fit so well into the concept. Here, harsher light is used, contrasting makeup is used, and emphasis is placed on the hairstyle.

NIKON D800 / 28.0-75.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 100, F8, 1/250 s, 72.0 mm equiv.

In terms of staging, everything is simple here. Several people are holding monstera leaves in the foreground and behind the model.

At the post-processing stage, I paid a lot of attention to glossy retouching, adding richness to the leaves, color and contrast to the hair. Selectively apply the Color Efex Pro filter / tonal contrast using a brush.

Here is another floral image of Anastasia. Here, studio light and a dark background are very harmoniously combined with a delicate image of the model and a depth of field effect created in Photoshop, with an emphasis on the eyes and hair. Detailed retouching and color correction were carried out.

NIKON D800 / 28.0-75.0 mm f/2.8 SETTINGS: ISO 800, F11, 1/250 s, 62.0 mm equiv.

And these shots were shot in the studio with an open aperture, but using studio pulsed light. I wanted to blur the background a little so that there would not be an impression of oversaturation with details and the picture would be softer. But at the same time, it was important to get sharp sharpness on the model, so I wanted to shoot using pulsed light.

Today we want to offer you some new ideas for being outside, in the open air. Most importantly, don't forget that no one has yet come up with a trick to get by without proper exposure and white balance. So - attention and attention again.

Well, now to the point.

Idea #1:

Even if you have a hundred focus points on your camera, choose only one.

If you set the control of your camera to autofocus mode, then its automation itself selects the focus points. This can easily ruin your portrait. The fact is that automation most often chooses to adjust the focus the object that is closest to the lens. Sometimes the camera selects a group of these points to focus on and produces an average result, which is based on the average distance between all these points. If you use one focus point, then control of the sharpness of the frame is completely in your hands.

Idea #2:

The eyes should always be sharp.

The eyes are the most important thing in a portrait. They should be the semantic center of the entire composition of the frame. If there are no eyes in the picture, it can hardly be called a portrait. When shooting with a wide open aperture and focusing on the eyes, the bokeh of the lens will give a noticeable softening of the skin in the portrait.

Idea #3:

Shoot wide open and you'll get good bokeh and shallow depth of field.

One of the many reasons to buy a lens with a good aperture is that you get the opportunity to take pictures with a shallow depth of field. This is, of course, far from new idea, but she will help you. When shooting with a fast lens at aperture 2.8 or 4, you need to use a shallow depth of field. After all, with an open aperture, you get wonderful portraits and beautiful blurred backgrounds, which, in fact, are called “bokeh”.

Idea #4:

Portraits should be shot with a lens with a focal length of more than 50 mm.

Wide-angle lenses have the unpleasant property of distorting the proportions of the subject being photographed. And we shoot a portrait, that is, a close-up of a person’s face. Here these distortions are especially inappropriate. That's why we recommend working in this genre with lenses with a focal length of 120 or even 200 mm. In addition, such lenses provide a beautiful blurred background.

Going #5:

After shooting, you always need to do some computer processing of the footage. And in order for this processing not to be detrimental to the quality of the image, you need to save files in RAW format. The fact is that RAW, unlike JPG, stores all the information about the photograph taken in full (much like a negative when shooting on film). And JPG mercilessly deletes everything it doesn’t need. Therefore, with any editing in JPG you lose information. And the more serious the editing, the greater the losses. And this naturally leads to a decrease in the quality of the image. So when shooting and RAW, it is possible to make very serious changes to the image before saving it as a JPG.

Idea #6:

Try to always have a gray card with you. It will help you set the white balance correctly.

When you open a photo in Adobe Camera Raw or any other RAW application to edit it, you always have the option of choosing a white balance. The most common way to do this is to use the eyedropper tool, which requires you to click on the area of the image that you consider to be gray.

But it happens, for example, that on one day you filmed in several places with different lighting conditions. And your white balance was always set to automatic configuration. In this case, you will get about a thousand pictures and... many, many hours of monotonous work. To prevent this from happening, we recommend setting the white balance using a gray card in each new location. How is a separate conversation. To get started, you can refer to the instructions for your camera.

Idea #7:

If direct sunlight falls directly on the portrait subject, then he begins to squint. And this is of no use to us at all. Plus, such lighting leads to the formation of shadows under the eyes... But in the shadows, the light is always soft and diffused. Not as harsh as in the sun. And if you set the exposure and white balance correctly, then your portrait will definitely turn out successful.

Idea #8:

You can also shoot in bad weather

If you want to take a portrait outdoors and the sky is overcast, don’t worry. Shoot in this weather too. After all, clouds are a wonderful diffuser of sunlight!

Idea #9:

How to shoot with brightly directed and hard light.

If possible, control the direction of the light. If the light source is directly behind the subject, this is very bad. This is only good if you want to get a silhouette in the photo or shoot a model in backlight. Classic and most the best option shooting outdoors - when the sun is behind you.

Idea #10:

Natural light reflectors.

In the USA they think that 75% of trucks on earth are white. And that these white trucks are wonderful natural reflectors of light. In our case, you can use, for example, fences or walls of houses as reflectors. Or any other large and light surface.

Idea #11:

Aperture rule 16.

All photographers need to know this rule. And, if possible, apply it when other ideas we proposed today cannot work. And the rule is very simple: on a bright and sunny day, when shooting with an aperture of 16, the shutter speed will be equal to one divided by ISO. For example, if your ISO is 100 and your aperture is 16, then you need to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/100.

Idea #12:

About the benefits of sheets.

An old sheet that is lying around in your closet can be taken with you to shoot in the summer, in the absence of another reflector. It won’t take up much space in the case, and can serve as a great light diffuser. With the help of a few clothespins, the sheet can be attached anywhere and however you want. The photos will turn out wonderful!

Well, the most important thing for a photo shoot, including outdoors, is that you and your model enjoy the process of shooting, so that you have good mood and complete mutual understanding was reached. And then you will succeed!

A studio photo shoot is always a professional shooting, as a result of which you can get high quality photos portrait and other character. Many people associate a photo studio with the usual genres of photography: glamor, fashion, etc. But the studio is also suitable for a lot of different ideas, which will be discussed further.

Options for ideas

The choice of photo shoot idea will depend on the capabilities of the studio itself. Nowadays, you can find both the most ordinary studios with one or two location options, and real “monsters” in their field - the ultimate dream of any photographer. Typically, such studios have everything, from a luxurious list of locations to the technical capabilities of the premises - the presence of additional lighting, fans, smoke machines, projectors, mirrors, machines for simulating rain, which will allow you to realize an endless number of worthwhile ideas.

The choice of idea also depends on your financial capabilities. It is most expensive to implement genre, complex ideas, which require the presence of a themed costume and accessories.

In second place in terms of costs are photo shoots in the genres of beauty, classics, and romance. This is where you need help professional makeup artist and a hairdresser, but you can handle the clothes yourself, limiting yourself to your own wardrobe.

Please note the following options:

"Wet" photo shoot

The idea of a “wet” photo shoot, if, of course, the studio has everything necessary for its implementation, is appropriate in the images of a mermaid, river nymph, naiad. In general, it is not necessary to have a device to simulate rain in the frame. Just have a photographer's assistant or your friend spray water over you from a spray bottle a second before the click, and then you will get a beautiful and unusual light drizzle effect. It’s not scary if drops get on your face or hair; with good lighting, this will add a velvety effect to your skin and a special radiance to your eyes.

Seasons

Implementation of the image idea within the framework of the seasonal theme of the time of year, for example, an autumn girl or a spring beauty. For this photo shoot, say, if you want to embody the image of autumn, you will need leaves as attributes, maybe pine cones, as an option - a wicker basket with vegetables and fruits - as a symbol of the harvest, you can also grab a few large yellow pumpkins.

Your makeup and clothes should be done exclusively in autumn colors, preferably in a gold palette. You can also decorate exposed areas of the body with sparkles or gold plating.

Light erotica

Nudity in this genre of photography is not welcome, but a hint of passion is yes. It is only necessary to slightly indicate erotic notes in your image. For example, this could be a look, a pose, a lowered strap, etc.

This idea is good for the studio, first of all, because it requires the model to have loose acting skills, and in a place where there are a lot of prying eyes, you won’t get into the role too much.

In the studio you can shoot all types of erotica, from light erotica to Nude - complete nudity.

Black and white photo

Of course, any photo can by and large be converted to black and white. But it is in the studio, if your goal is to do a photo shoot of this kind, you will be able to achieve best result. This way the photographer will initially set the necessary lighting, or even immediately switch to black and white photo mode.
Color accents in such photographs look interesting.

For example: convert everything to black and white except lips, eyes or some other details. Then the result of the shooting will be somewhat similar to the style of the famous comic book series “Sin City”.

Futuristic and thematic ideas

The genres suitable for implementation here are steampunk, dark, gothic, future, etc. These images require preparation. Costumes should be well designed, and hairstyle, makeup and attributes should be consistent with the overall image.

Image options: alien, vampire, robot, angel or some other unusual creature.

Shooting with a spotlight

In the studio it is necessary to use all the technical potential that this place has. Spotlights are well suited for decorating incendiary ideas: rock star, punk, guitar playing, dance, etc.

Depending on the color of the spotlight, you can play with one or another idea. For example: red for more daring and restless themes: dance, hell theme, passion, blue - for calmer ones: fashion, winter, sleeping beauty.

Shooting with a projector

A photo shoot with projectors is not yet massively popular, so you have the opportunity to be among the first and really get something new and fresh, not hackneyed shots. When choosing an idea, everything is simple: a lot depends on the content of the image that will be transmitted to you and the surface behind you.
With the help of a projector you can play with a lot of ideas, but it is better to pay attention to fairy-tale themes.

Photo shoot on the move

In the studio, the photographer may invite you to take shots in motion that will convey the dynamics of the photo. This photo session is suitable for those who love to dance and know how to move smoothly and beautifully.

Shooting with animals

However, your choice should not stop only at cats or dogs. All the pets look great in the frame, from rabbits and parrots to turtles and snakes. But a photo with a large python or a large dog will be especially beneficial.
The genre of such photos can be different: fairy-tale, gothic, etc.

Classic

Here you can simply dress elegantly and perfect your image: beautiful makeup and hairstyle, a minimum of accessories and attributes. A classic evening dress would be suitable: a long dress, a muff, perhaps a tiara.

Retro

To implement this idea in the studio, prepare retro things for the photo shoot that would relate to the style of any decades of the 20th century (except the 80s and 90s). It can be in the style of the twenties, when burlesque motifs came into fashion, or it can be in the fifties, during which the incomparable Marilyn Monroe shone. Try to stick to only one style in a photo shoot, without mixing them, otherwise a bad pun may occur.

Cosplay

This includes ideas for embodying characters from cartoons, movies, games, books, etc. If you have a favorite character, for example, Lara Croft or Barbie, you need to try to find as many connecting elements as possible with this image. So, in the case of Lara Croft, this is a repetition of the character’s hairstyle, makeup, her demeanor, but, most importantly, copying her costume and attributes - pistols, knives, backpack, and so on. In the case of Barbie, you will need a fluffy dress, preferably pink, curls in your hair and repetition of the makeup of this popular doll - arrows, false eyelashes of incredible length, soft pink or beige lipstick and gloss.

Every girl dreams of adding professional ones to her collection. high-quality photographs. Using beautiful images for photos, you can freeze the moment and preserve happy moments for a long memory. To get unusual photos, you will definitely need appropriate styling, bright makeup, themed costumes and decorations. Before a photo shoot, many girls begin a series of beauty treatments: haircut, hair coloring, solarium, sugaring, manicure. All this allows you to make the image for a photo shoot truly ideal.

A photo shoot in a studio with a professional photographer will allow girls to go back to the past as if in a time machine or try on a new role. Any lady can become for a couple of hours a famous actress, a fairy-tale heroine or a stylish person from the pages of a fashion magazine. When thinking about an image for a photo shoot, you should take into account not only your desires, but also your appearance. The following factors are of primary importance:

  1. Age. Images for photo shoots that are suitable for young girls will not look aesthetically pleasing, and sometimes even comical, on mature women. The wrong outfit can add a couple of years to your life. If you do not pursue this goal, be more careful when choosing clothes for shooting. Take help or advice from a stylist.
  2. Height and build. Slender girls in revealing outfits look impressive, but on plump girls, this kind of clothing will focus attention on excess weight. Different sets of clothing can both lengthen and shorten legs, divide the body, and distort proportions. Leggings, tight dresses, large prints can ruin the overall impression. If in doubt, choose basic clothes or classics.
  3. Color type. The shades in makeup and outfit should be harmoniously combined with the girl’s appearance. There are a number of color tables that make it easy to create a complete image for a photo shoot. With the help of clothes you can highlight the beauty of your eyes and hair.
  4. Face shape and neck. Jewelry and cutouts on clothing can visually change the proportions of the neck. Be careful with jewelry. Sometimes the subject of a photo shoot for a girl requires a hairstyle in which the forehead and ears need to be exposed. See if you like it.

To make a photo shoot in the studio original, you can come up with unusual images yourself or seek help from a photographer. When putting together an outfit, the harmony of textures in fabrics is important. In ordinary life, the difference is not visible, but with a flash, all the details catch the eye. If several people will participate in the photo shoot, then pay attention to the matching of clothes in color, style and season.

For creative ideas you will need a lot of decorative attributes. Don’t forget that photo studios offer their clients already decorated thematic areas with accessories. Choose a location for shooting that is closest to your theme and style.

Ideas for images

When choosing a subject for photography, carefully consider what it will require. Some image ideas for a photo shoot require significant financial investment. How many hours will the shoot last? Will a makeup artist, florist or decorator be involved? Maybe your plans include renting a suit, car, or animal? Calculate your budget. You can create unusual images from scrap materials for a photo shoot yourself. Ask what rare items are left in your grandmother’s collection, what interesting items you have at your dacha.

When preparing for a shoot, girls want to have time to change dozens of different outfits and take a thousand shots, but this is impossible. During a standard photo shoot, 2-3 looks are usually changed. Discuss your ideas with the photographer. Don't forget how convenient it will be to take off and change outfits without smudging your makeup or damaging your hair.

It is better to apply makeup using bright eye shadows and blush, and decorate your hair with plastic hairpins or colored hoops.

Shooting with special effects

This format of a photo shoot for a girl will allow you to transform into an aggressive warrior or a kind fairy-tale heroine. How to pose in the studio so that the photos look natural

Professional photographs are required high requirements. Each frame is treated as a work of art. Models in the photo should not only pose and play their role, but also show emotions. A good image has meaning, conveys a mood, and tells a story. It is important to recognize the fine line between posing and grimacing. Secrets of natural photos:

  • comfortable clothes, shoes;
  • comfortable look;
  • trusting relationship with the photographer.

If you don't wear makeup at all, ask a makeup artist to do light makeup for you, without using too bright colors. This will make you more comfortable. Don’t try to immediately repeat the elaborate poses from fashion magazines, especially if this is your first time in front of the camera.

To begin, take standard photographs: a classic portrait, a photograph in full height. It's not scary at all. Next, start experimenting. We recommend looking at photos in a similar style on the Internet, finding good poses and noting mistakes. Among them:

  • tense fingers and hands;
  • unnatural position of body parts;
  • sharp bends;
  • feigned emotions;
  • overly active facial expressions.

A photo shoot for girls is an exciting process. You need to relax and tune in to the desired wavelength; for this you can turn on music. To make your photos look natural, be yourself.

Conducting a photo shoot at professional photographer, you are guaranteed to benefit from help and advice while posing. Follow these guidelines when choosing the right look for a photo shoot:

  • don’t chase trends, not all girls suit what’s fashionable;
  • find in advance pictures with images in which models have a similar type to you;
  • do not use a lot of different style decorations;
  • feel the fine line between a bright and vulgar image;
  • choose the idea that will reveal you as a person and show your inner world;
  • Realistically evaluate your natural abilities and acting talent.

To reduce or enlarge any part of the body in a photograph, consider the distance to the lens. Be aware of the neck and other curves of the body. Smooth lines can make a photo look inviting, so don't over-arch it. So the photo can become vulgar, and folds will appear on the skin. Learn to feel the image. Remember that the surrounding scenery and outfits have a secondary role. Sometimes a too bright style and image for a photo shoot can overshadow the personality.

Stopping the moment is every person's dream. The art of photography is designed to deceive time and remember important and touching moments. Today, people take photographs of almost everything, from food to small children. Every day billions of new photos and videos are posted on the Internet. Not all of them, as a rule, are distinguished by an outstanding artistic component and semantic load.

A photo shoot in the studio is a holiday that will remain forever in the life of a model. So why not arrange it for yourself? And how to choose an image for a photo shoot in a studio for a girl to look original, but appropriate and not vulgar?

Purpose and idea of photography

Any photo shoot in the studio and images for girls, photos are selected individually, according to the characteristics of the model.

First of all, you need to decide on the purpose of filming. There is a difference between taking photos in honor of a birthday, taking photos for the business world, and simply wanting to please yourself (this article is not talking about targeted wedding and photo sessions “in anticipation of a miracle”). If the reason for shooting is the desire to have fun and remember the bright moments of life, then you can experiment. In other cases, it is better to adhere to the canons and principles of appropriateness and expediency.

It is also important to look on the Internet in a girl’s studio in order to choose what is more interesting and take into account other people’s mistakes.

Having decided on the goal, you can move on to choosing the main idea. Will it be a shocking shoot to surprise everyone, or will the model just want beautiful photos for social networks? First of all, you should make sure that your makeup and hairstyle are impeccable. Since the flash and special studio lighting neutralize most of the brightness, the makeup should be somewhat exaggerated. Then it will look beautiful in the photo. It is better to choose a hairstyle based on the amount of time and hair type. Posing is the basis of any photo shoot. You don't have to study at a modeling school to become photogenic. There are several classic poses, adding your own personality and zest to them, you can get bright and beautiful photographs.

The most hackneyed, but also the most romantic and tender image for a girl for a photo shoot in the studio is a princess. Why about him at all? we're talking about, if everyone is tired of him? Yes, because it suits absolutely any young lady, regardless of the features of the figure, skin, hair and other girlish nuances.

This type of photography can be transformed by adding some sophistication to it. For example, you can come up with the image of a bright sleeping beauty or a dead princess (waiting for the healing kiss of the prince, of course). The princess can also run (with or without shoes) or sing.

In this case, it is better to rent an outfit. So, the image will be complete and perfect.

Shooting in grunge style

Grunge is back at the height of fashion, and this is a great image idea for a photo shoot in a studio for a girl with a rebel soul. And, of course, careless hair and makeup will be more appropriate here than ever. By the way, careless makeup is high-quality, but done using a special technique. Not to be confused with smeared face paint.

Grunge is not for everyone, but sometimes you really want to try yourself in a new role, surprising yourself and those around you.

Filming in noir style

Black and white photographs will never go out of style. You can diversify a series of identical photos using the vintage style of old Hollywood.
