The lightest tripod for travel. Reduces weight without sacrificing rigidity

A tripod probably won't be at the top of your list of equipment you'll buy. But if you are seriously involved in photo or video shooting, you will move on to purchasing it quite quickly.

Because in the evening or at night it’s impossible to take a good photograph, a high-quality panorama, without a tripod.

If it comes to buying a tripod, then you already have a camera or video camera. And as a plus, there are also photo lenses, filters, flash or on-camera light. That is, a bunch of electron-optical equipment with a considerable total weight.

And you have to carry it all yourself.

Hence the first characteristic - The tripod should be lightweight.

And if you go to a decent photo store, you can see a lot of tripods standing in the corner. We take the lightest and most airy one. Is this happiness?

What if you try to unfold its joints, place it on the floor and, pressing a little from above, shake it?

Why do we need a tripod that will bend and sway like a fishing rod under the weight of the equipment?

We get the second characteristic - The tripod must be rigid.

A person who “ate dog” on weight reduction will remember the word “carbon” or carbon fiber, and he will be right. Many companies use carbon fiber tubes in the manufacture of tripods. This material allows you to make lightweight and very rigid tripods, which have the only problem - price.

You have to forget about $100 tripods. No, many people buy something like this as their first tripod. And they even use it. Once or twice. Because such a tripod is not much use.

If in the case of photo tripods the cost of even a very good and very expensive model rarely exceeds $1000, then with video tripods the situation is much worse. Both in terms of price and in terms of their weight. Therefore, if you don’t have a minibus with equipment coming for you, you have to forget about normal video tripods. And shoot video from a photo tripod. But with a video head. More on this a little later.

Reduces weight without sacrificing rigidity.

Not that carbon fiber is the only option for weight reduction. There is also aluminum and its alloys, and there is basalt. But they are heavier. About 30-40 percent.

Perhaps the number one brand in the field of quality tripods is the Italian Gitzo. Very good tripods for very significant money. If you can afford them, take them, you won’t regret it. For example, models from the Mountainer or Traveler series with their particularly compact folding method will serve you for many years.

But do not forget that a tripod is selected not only by its own weight and the maximum weight of the camera with a lens, but also by the maximum focal length of the lens. The larger it is, the more rigid the tripod should be. So, for an SLR camera with a 200mm lens and a tripod height of “in full height» The manufacturer recommends a tripod GT2541L, for which the maximum weight installed on it is up to 12 kilograms!

In my subjective opinion, the optimal tripod model for a traveler lies somewhere in the area of Gitzo GT1541 - GT2540.

If you plan to use the tripod more for video shooting, it will be good if its central column or the attachment of the head to the tripod has the ability to tilt (leveling) by 10-15 degrees in all directions. This makes it easier to level the camera horizontally.

One point about using a tripod.

If you want maximum rigidity, you should not extend the central column. At its maximum extension, it greatly reduces this rigidity.

To solve this problem, Kirk produces a replacement center column insert (FP-100, FP-200). Fortunately, in the latest Gitzo Mountainer models, this problem has finally been solved by the manufacturer itself - the central column can be removed from the tripod without additional tools. Unless you're willing to sacrifice an extra 20cm of height.

Tripod head for photo tripod

Serious tripods are most often sold without a tripod head. It is selected in the same way as a lens for a camera - in different cases. The most universal are ball heads. Moreover, if you are not a fan of any one brand, it is better to choose those heads that support the most widely used standard of Arca-Swiss quick-release pads.

The trendsetters here are both the Arca-Swiss company itself and the companies Markins, Kirk, Wimberly, Really Right Staff and others. They release a large assortment very high quality and expensive tripod heads.

Some of these heads (the same Arca-Swiss), although they are called ball heads, essentially are not such. And they basically contain not a ball, but something slightly ovoid. When turning from a vertical position in any direction, the resistance of the head to rotation gradually increases. This is done so that when the camera is loosened, it does not “peck down” and collapse to the ground along with the tripod.

A lightweight ball head for the traveling photographer is something with a ball diameter in the range of 25 - 40mm. The weight turns out to be around 200 - 500g. Don’t forget a separate platform(s) for existing equipment.

It is advisable to select platforms installed on cameras and lenses that comply with the Arca-Swiss standard to suit your camera (lens) model. Unlike universal platforms, specialized ones “sit” much more reliably and tightly.

If the price for the products of the “first echelon” companies seems somewhat overpriced, there is always the opportunity to choose something from Korean or Chinese analogues. Just don’t expect that you will get “Gitzo for a third of the price” :-)

When using a tripod, use a self-timer or remote release to reduce vibration. For SLR cameras, it is better to use a preliminary raising of the mirror to reduce vibration.

If you can’t imagine your life without shooting panoramas, you should pay attention to a lightweight panoramic head.

Unfortunately, the major brands do not produce lightweight, wearable panoramic heads. And they produce something monstrous and very expensive.

Unlike small specialized companies.

For example, with such a nodal head you can make multi-row panoramas and 360-degree VR panoramas that are becoming fashionable. To Moscow she, after ordering on the website

Tripod head for video tripod

There are so many wonderful video heads that reputable manufacturers produce. They are hydraulic, and with compensation for the weight of the camera, and with the ability to make panoramas along two axes at once. But their weight...

One of the lightweight aluminum video heads with hydraulics on both axes, the Manfrotto 503HDV, weighs about 2 kg. Obviously not a hiking option.

Remain, as in the case of tripods, heads made of composite materials.

For example Manfrotto 701RC2 - 0.8kg.

Or Gitzo G2180 - 0.6kg.

You won’t get the special smoothness and balance inherent in “adult” video heads with these models, but this is a price to pay for weight reduction.

And one more thing - video heads can be successfully used for mounting photographic equipment on them. Just stock up on removable platforms so as not to twist them from video camera to camera.

But the opposite is not true - there is no particular point in installing a video camera on the photo head.

Tripods are required to secure the camera. They are indispensable when shooting on long exposures, when using powerful zoom lenses and allow the photographer to photograph himself in the company of friends. The world of tripods and monopods is diverse. Don't get lost in it and do right choice The rating of the best tripods for cameras and video cameras will help. We have selected the best options for monopods and tripods (floor-standing and tabletop), based on reviews and reviews from professionals. Our rating will help you decide which tripod is the best in a certain category.

The best floor tripods - tripods for photo and video cameras

A tripod is a versatile and popular tripod design. When searching, pay attention to reliability, maximum load and height of the model. Enthusiasts will appreciate the additional functionality: the ability to flip the central rod, replace the tripod head, and the presence of a removable platform. Please note that in addition to 3D heads, ball heads are becoming widespread. They allow you to quickly change the shooting point without tedious adjustments along the axes. According to manufacturers, most tripods will be suitable for cameras and camcorders, but videographers will need to be vigilant. Not all tripods have a smooth head movement without jerking.

4 Falcon Eyes Travel Line 3600

The most low price in category
Country: China
Average price: 1,560 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

A tripod that does not have a wide range of functions, but will please you with its price and simplicity of design. It weighs only 1.34 kg. The device is lightweight and durable, making it ideal for street shooters. The height at which the camera will be placed: from 61 to 170 cm. The lifting mechanism and three sliding sections allow you to smoothly change the height of the tripod. The tripod has a built-in level for correctly positioning the camera in a horizontal position.

You can hang a camera bag on the bar – there is a separate hook for this. The tripod can support a camera weighing 4 kg - this is quite an impressive weight, so you don’t have to worry about the tripod breaking. The kit includes a 3D head for pointing the camera. It rotates regardless of the camera position and is capable of panoramic photography. A case is also included with the device. A separate advantage of the model is the price. It is quite low, but the quality of the model is optimal. For those who are just starting to master photography and don’t want to overpay, this tripod is what they need.

3 Jmary KP-2264

Best Max Height
Country: China
Average price: 3,240 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Quite a good tripod for amateurs. The legs of this tripod consist of three sections and end with rubber tips from which spikes protrude. Therefore, you can stably install the model on any surface - slippery, loose, uneven, and so on. The tripod can hold equipment weighing up to 4 kilograms, so it can easily be used with even professional cameras and good video cameras.

When folded, the length of the tripod is 57 centimeters and weighs almost 1.5 kilograms, which is not very convenient. Despite the weight, the tripod feels flimsy and not very stable, so it's best not to overload it. The maximum installation height of the camera is 1.76 meters. Although in the reviews some buyers write that you can achieve greater length if you try. For stability, you can hang a bag or additional weight from a special hook. Conveniently, the tripod has a built-in level with which you can level the camera. A convenient carrying case is included.

2 Benro T-600EX

Simple design (two clips)
Country: China
Average price: 2,100 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

A Chinese tripod with excellent characteristics takes the silver. It is quite stable and made simply - it has a minimum of moving parts. The fastenings are two clips that are easy to open and close. Therefore, it is convenient for assembly and disassembly on site, and the minimum number of “weak points” makes the structure more stable. The maximum you can raise the camera on this tripod is 146 centimeters. At the same time, it folds down to 57 centimeters and weighs 1.46 kilograms.

It can hold equipment weighing up to 3 kilograms. At the same time, it has a 3D head, which allows you to shoot from any angle without unnecessary rearrangements of the camera and tripod. There is a convenient lifting mechanism. I’m not happy that the handle is located for the left hand, and some buyers indicated in reviews that this was inconvenient for them. But the head travel is quite smooth compared to other models in this price category. So we can call the tripod quite a good purchase for amateurs. A carrying case is included.

The choice of tripod depends on the type of camera and purpose of use. Amateurs can focus on the cost of models, but professionals will have to delve into every detail.

This parameter is crucial for owners of photographic equipment with heavy zoom lenses. Best choice It will be better to buy a tripod with a safety margin, since manufacturers sin by overestimating the maximum load.

Reliability of the design. Thin plastic connections shorten the life of the purchase. But if a tripod for a camera or video camera is rarely needed, you can save money on it.

Shooting height. Height is important when purchasing a tripod or floor standing monopod. Low tripods limit the photographer’s ability to choose an advantageous angle; they are uncomfortable for tall people.

Compactness. The weight of the tripod and its dimensions when folded affect the ease of transportation and reliability of fixation. As a rule, the lighter and more compact the model, the less stable it is.

Removable platform. Useful in situations where you need to quickly remove the camera from a tripod. The photographer remains mobile in any situation and does not waste important minutes unscrewing photographic equipment.

Head type. The two main types of tripod heads for cameras are 3D and ball. 3Ds hold the equipment tightly, but require adjustment and fixation along each axis. The ball head gives better efficiency, but is not as reliable. For a video camera, a video head that provides smooth movement when turning is preferable. Professionals prefer tripods with removable heads: they can be replaced if they break or depending on the specifics of the shooting.

1 HAMA Star-63 (04163)

Country: Germany
Average price: RUB 1,739.
Rating (2019): 4.8

A versatile lightweight tripod that can handle wide range tasks. It is suitable for a camera in the budget segment and for professional camera. The bases of the legs have enviable stability. In windy weather, a special hook on which the load is suspended is useful. Comfortable height adjustment will appeal to photographers of different heights. The height of the tripod is adjustable from 66 to 166 centimeters, which is enough for most tasks. The set comes with a nice carrying case.

The budget price does not give the right to count on high quality plastic, but consumer complaints about the fragility of the structure are rare. One of the justified complaints: the lack of smooth movement along the axes, necessary for video cameras.

In general, for its price HAMA Star-63 – best tripod, which confidently holds in the ratings.

The best tabletop tripods - tripods

Tabletop camera tripods are useful when traveling and at home. They will replace stacks of books and other ridiculous structures that amateur photographers use to secure equipment. Mini tripods don’t take up much space, but they help you easily frame your shot and hold the camera securely.

4 HAMA Mini Ball L (04064)

The lightest in the category
Country: Germany
Average price: 480 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

The first from the bottom in the ranking of desktop tripods was this model with telescopic two-section legs and a fairly decent length. A tripod allows you to use photo and video cameras, but not too heavy ones - otherwise the supports will begin to fold. You can lift the equipment to a maximum height of 21 centimeters. The minimum length is 14 centimeters. At the same time, the tripod is very light - only 110 grams. Therefore, it is convenient to carry it even with big amount technology - the additional weight is almost unnoticeable.

I'm glad that the kit includes a ball head for shooting - for such a price it's just an excellent solution. The legs have rubber tips, due to which they do not move apart when installing the camera and do not slide on a smooth surface. By the way, this is a very cheap tripod, which somewhat affects the quality - the model is suitable for not too demanding amateurs.

3 Cullmann Magnesit Copter

Excellent stability
Country: Germany
Average price: 2,550 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Laconic, high quality, convenient. These three words describe this desktop tripod, which can support a device weighing up to 4 kilograms. Allows you to install the camera at a minimum height of 10 centimeters. When folded, it reaches 16 centimeters and weighs only 180 grams, so it can be carried unnoticed in a backpack or purse.

The tripod has a laconic design - there is nothing superfluous on it, only elements that perform specific functions. The legs of the model are made of a fairly strong aluminum alloy. I'm not happy that the kit does not include a head - you will have to buy it separately. But they can be quickly changed and the tripod can be used even with simple video cameras, not to mention SLR cameras. In reviews, buyers note that the model’s stability is excellent, and the equipment does not dangle on it.

2 Velbon EX-Mini

The most versatile desktop tripod
Country: China
Average price: 1,690 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Externally, a reliable tripod for video cameras and cameras resembles classic tripods. The model has a central column, adjustable reinforcement bars and two-section legs. Thoughtful design responds high requirements, but affects weight. Not everyone will decide to take an extra half a kilo on vacation, but for home photo experiments it’s the best option. With Velbon EX-Mini, the camera can be installed in any position, and a tripod is convenient for macro photography. The minimum height is only 19 centimeters. The maximum length for work is also pleasing - 41.7 centimeters, so you can use it as a floor stand for “low” angles.

The 2D head, at first glance, seems inconvenient, but among photographers there are fans of this particular camera position control system. Having aligned the horizontal once, the photographer can only adjust the vertical position.

The stable tripod is designed for semi-professional and amateur cameras, but there has been confusion about the weight it can support. Most online resources indicate 2.5 kilograms, and on the box - 1.5.

1 Manfrotto PIXI Mini

The best ratio of price and quality. Best adjustment system
Country: China
Average price: 2,200 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Lightweight, compact, reliable and stylish, the model takes first place in the ranking of the best tabletop tripods. Buyers are left with only positive emotions from using the tripod. It allows you to work with the camera at a height of 13.5 centimeters. Its maximum length when folded is 18.5 centimeters. Rounded legs allow you to use the model also as a camera handle when shooting handheld.

The tripod weighs only 200 grams, but can confidently withstand a load of up to 1 kilogram. And it's not easy marketing ploy: Manfrotto PIXI Mini is suitable even for SLR cameras with compact optics. It securely fixes the camera, and rubber pads on the supports add stability. Even a child can understand the clear adjustment system: to change the position you only need to press one button.

But lovers of macro photography will not appreciate the purchase: it is impossible to lower the camera much vertically.

The best tripods - monopods

Monopods are familiar to modern consumers as selfie sticks, but they practical use much wider. Floor standing monopods for cameras and video cameras are widely used by professionals. Single-legged tripods can provide a secure point of support without taking up much space around the operator. This “lifesaver” will come in handy in a crowd and will help the photographer reach hard-to-reach shooting points.

It is also ideal for filming various tricks on snowboarding, skateboarding and other sports.

The device allows you to make first-person video that accompanies filming, static footage, selfies, etc. Another advantage is that it is not afraid of water. Suitable for all GoPro cameras. All these qualities make the monopod universal and multifunctional. The product has many positive reviews from satisfied customers. You can safely go on a trip with it - all the most exciting moments will be captured. However, keep in mind that it was designed for lightweight action cameras, so it won’t withstand heavy models.

1 Rekam RM-120

Best price
Country: USA
Average price: 1,460 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The budget monopod will be of interest to novice photographers and professionals. The height of 171 centimeters is enough for a photographer of any height and when shooting from hard-to-reach angles. The tripod itself weighs 375 grams and can support 3-kilogram cameras. In reviews, buyers note the most high speed assembly and start of work, which can be important when filming events or incidents.

The head is not rotatable, so it is not suitable for selfies. But some photographers are looking for just such an option: due to the simplicity of the design, the camera is quickly installed on the site.

The tripod does not have a convenient folding foot, the dimensions are not compact, and the plastic does not inspire confidence. But if you eliminate the shortcomings, the model will cost more. Rekam RM-120 is the best in its price category and confidently holds its place in the ranking of camera tripods.

The best tripods with an original design

Models with an original design fill the gaps of classic tripods. A non-standard approach can attract attention. But this is not the main thing. The important thing is that such tripods are capable of solving unusual problems in difficult conditions. They can be anything: tabletop, floor-mounted, hanging, and so on.

3 ERA ECP-0070

Attaches anywhere
Country: China
Average price: 790 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.5

This is a universal tabletop tripod that can work simultaneously in tripod and clamp mode. It attaches easily to any protrusion that accepts a clamp, so you can simply screw the model anywhere. Can support a photo or video camera weighing up to 0.8 kilograms. At the same time, it can provide a shooting height of 14 centimeters. The head is supported on hinges, so the tripod allows you to place the camera at any angle relative to you.

The clamp holds the equipment quite tightly in the desired position if it is not overloaded. In reviews, customers note that the product is relatively good, but only for amateur filming. The disadvantage is that the quality of the materials is not the highest. Because of the ridiculous price, manufacturers decided to save money, so you shouldn’t count on the plastic tripod to withstand heavy loads. In addition, the head will have to be purchased separately.

2 Rekam M-50

Best price
Country: USA
Average price: 610 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The design resembles less of a tripod and more of a camera stand. Rekam M-50 is so compact that when folded it will fit into the pocket of a man's shirt or jeans. But wearing it in trousers is risky due to its untrustworthy design. According to customer reviews, the rubber pads on the legs fall off when unpacking the product.

There is no height adjustment, everything will have to be removed from a level of 16 centimeters. Only changing the angle along the vertical axis is possible. The manufacturer specifies a load of up to 1 kilogram, but it doesn’t hold heavy DSLRs well.

The tripod design allows you to shoot at a height of 10 to 16 centimeters. But only by changing the vertical position of the camera - the tripod itself has no adjustment. The budget model will be the best for owners of compact cameras to occasionally take photos with their family.

1 Miggo Splat MW SP-3N1 BL 50

The smallest of the original
Country: China
Average price: 2790 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

The leader of our rating is this unusual model with flexible legs. This tripod can be mounted on almost any surface and in any position. A tree branch, a table, a car steering wheel and, in general, anything you have enough imagination for will do. The legs bend at any angle: the camera can look down, up, straight - anywhere. Suitable for smartphones, GoPro and action cameras, as well as other lightweight models - three types of mounts included.

The tripod is made of stainless steel, so it is very durable. It is also lightweight - it weighs only 75 g. The gadget takes up virtually no space - it will even fit into a pocket or a lady's clutch. The tripod can support a small camera or smartphone weighing up to 500 grams: you shouldn’t expect it to hold larger ones. SLR Cameras. The gadget is reliable and easy to use. Plus a holder of an unusual shape, which will appeal to all lovers of interesting things. To make the set complete, it is worth purchasing a tripod head.

I bought my previous tripod based on the “weight/brand/average price” ratio, and I was happy with everything except for shooting in medium and strong winds - due to its lightness, it vibrated, and even the suspension in the form of a heavy bag with lenses did not help . And in December, when returning from Thailand, one of the stupors of the central column broke in the suitcase and it began to spontaneously collapse from time to time. A couple of months later, already in Kamchatka, one of the locks on the leg burst in the cold. As a result, the already not tall (140 cm) tripod was shortened by one knee. So I was faced with choosing a new tripod.

Having already had practical experience, I spent several days searching for a suitable model. This time the requirements were: reliability of design/trust of the brand/extended functionality. In the end, I chose the Manfrotto 190Go model! Manfrotto made of carbon alloy with a height range of 8-170 cm, a weight of 2 kg, coupling locks and a 90-degree folding central column.

The chip with the column was absolutely captivating. This function allows you to stabilize macro photography, take smooth panoramas, and also look into places where you would not risk it yourself.

In general, when choosing a tripod, you should pay attention to the following parameters:
1. Weight
2. Compactness
3. Height and its range
4. Leg clamp type
5. Tripod head type
6. Material
7. Manufacturer

I will talk about each of them in the next post.

So, what to look for when choosing a tripod for your camera:
1.Weight. You always want to buy something lighter, but this is a grave mistake. Already in moderate winds, a lightweight tripod begins to vibrate, and the quality of the images suffers. Of course, there is always the fear that the heavier it is, the more discomfort. In fact, weight is a matter of habit. After two days you don’t notice the difference that the tripod weighs 2 kg instead of 1.5.

2. Compactness (length when folded). This is an important parameter for traveling. At a minimum, be guided by the size of your suitcase? Also pay attention to the possibility of attaching it to your photo backpack. Typically 4-arm tripods take up less space, and this is the model I chose. When folded, it takes up 57 cm, but this is not the limit - Manfrotto has 4-knee models that are shorter. For example, my tripod is easily attached and carried on a compact photo backpack

3.Height. There are pocket tripods up to 10 cm in height, but their operating range is very limited. Mainly suitable for shooting in the city, where there are many elements of the architectural environment that can be used as a stand. Yes, and they are intended for smartphones and compact cameras. The most common height is 140-150 cm. But the most functional ones are even higher (for example, mine is 170 cm), they help you shoot freely from any viewing platform that has a high barrier, and allow you to “rise” above the crowd by finding literally a small hill.

You should also pay attention to the entire range of heights - what is the minimum height the tripod can provide.

The minimum height is ensured by how widely the legs can move apart and the ability to tilt the central column 90 degrees. Typically, only professional tripods can spread the legs wide. In the bulk, the divergence of the legs is rigidly fixed to the central column of the tripod by spacers. (In my model, all three legs are autonomous and move apart in a wide range, literally to the point of a “split”, and the tilt of the central column, by 90 degrees, completely “eats” the entire height, making the tripod only 8 cm high!).

4. The most common tripod knee locks are clamping ones. But, as my practice has shown, the plastic from which they are made may not withstand even minus 10. Therefore, this time I chose coupling ones. They are metal and can be opened/closed on each leg all at once by simply cupping the palm of your hand and twisting.
5. Tripod head. On cheap and pocket-sized versions it is absent, and the level of camera tilt is adjusted by changing the length and/or tilt of the legs. Advanced tripods have a 3D head, where there are three adjustment knobs responsible for tilting in each of the three planes, or an articulated head that has a wide range of rotation due to its
spherical shape. All good tripod heads are also equipped with a bubble level - a transparent capsule with water and an air bubble, showing how level it is fixed. By the way, professional tripods and heads are often sold separately so that the buyer can choose the desired configuration.

6. Material. The most common material is aluminum. Chinese tripods are made of very thin aluminum and cheap plastic. They are temptingly light, but not practical - they vibrate in the wind, and the locks and elbows do not provide a good fit. Brand tripods made of aluminum and plastic are much better. However, the optimal weight/reliability ratio is provided by expensive materials carbon (carbon fiber), titanium or magnesium. But this also affects the price.
7. I prefer technology famous brands responsible for their products. The leading manufacturer of tripods is the Italian company Manfrotto, which produces simply the widest range such equipment.
8. Additional functionality
This also includes legs that change the angle of inclination and a central column that folds 90 degrees.

These are also connectors for additional accessories. For example, mine has a socket where you can attach additional
