The history of the appearance of the icon

Each Mother of God icon has its own name and a miraculous story of its acquisition. In the history of Feodorovskaya, many names and events intersect: Theodore Stratelates, Blessed Paraskeva, Prince Alexander Nevsky, the dynasty of the Romanov Tsars. The icon has been the patron of the city of Kostroma for more than 8 centuries.

More about Orthodox saints:

The miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Theodorovskaya”.

The Holy Face was written by the Apostle of the Seventy and the Evangelist Luke, the author of one of the Gospels, in the 1st century after the Nativity of Christ and brings into the world kindness and universal concern for humanity.

The image was delivered from Jerusalem to the Russian land, and when and by whom - history has not preserved information about this. The image was kept in a small dilapidated chapel near the city of Gorodets, and here over time the Gorodets men's monastic monastery was erected.

In 1239, the Mongol-Tatars burned Gorodets, and during countless fires the holy image disappeared. Presumably it was given by Alexander Nevsky to the Kostroma prince Vasily Mizinny.

One day, Prince Vasily Yaroslavovich went hunting in the northern Kostroma forests. Here, near a small river, he saw the Face of the Virgin Mary shining with heavenly beauty. Simultaneously experiencing joy and great fear, he approached Him and wanted to take him in his hands. Surprisingly, the image miraculously soared in the air and climbed up the tree above his height. Taken aback, the prince fell to his knees and began tearfully begging the Queen of Heaven to allow her to take the image in her hands and deliver it to the main Kostroma church. But the icon remained inaccessible to his hands. Then the prince hastily went to Kostroma, told the clergy and parishioners of the cathedral about the extraordinary event. The religious procession headed to the place where the icon appeared. Having arrived at the place, all the pilgrims began to kneel and beg the Most Holy Virgin to show mercy to the city and transfer the icon to Kostroma. After the prayer service, the priests freely removed the Holy Face from a tall pine tree and solemnly transferred it to the city church.

The next day, a huge line lined up to venerate the Mother of God, and many parishioners announced to the priesthood that the day before they had seen an unusually dressed man in military clothing walking along the city streets and holding the newly appeared icon in his hands. People recognized him as Theodore Stratilates and realized that the heavenly patron of Kostroma himself had brought a miraculous shrine as a gift to the city. On behalf of Theodore Stratilates, the icon received the name Feodorovskaya, and on the site of its miraculous discovery the first Kostroma monastery was erected. His altar, as an exception to the generally accepted rules, was facing north, to where the icon was revealed.

Iconography

At first glance, the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God is very reminiscent of the Vladimirskaya, but taking a closer look at it, some differences and symbols are visible.

On both icons, the Infant of God hugs His Mother by the neck and presses His cheek against hers, but He sits on His mother’s right hand. His right leg is covered with a robe, and his left leg is bare to the knee, symbolizing the memory of Christ's Passion. The Mother of God has a mournful appearance, which means that She is already mourning Her Son, who is going to death for the atonement of human sins.

The Almaty-Feodorovskaya Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is an accurate list of the shrine of the Orthodox world, the great All-Russian shrine.

On the reverse side there is a half-length image of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. She wears red clothes decorated with gold patterns, and her hands are raised in prayer at chest level.

The Mother of God is the great Representative before the throne of Her Son, so that mankind may conduct its earthly path righteously and with dignity, so that people do good, love the Heavenly Father and their neighbor, so that they value that short time, which is set aside for the acquisition of holiness, and prepared themselves for Salvation and Eternal Life.

In honor of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, two solemn days were established to honor her memory: August 29 and March 27.

The miraculous appearance of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God in Kostroma to Prince Vasily Yaroslavich, the younger brother of St. Alexander Nevsky, took place in the late 50s - early 60s of the 13th century. On the eve of the apparition, on the day of the Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many residents of Kostroma saw a warrior with an icon of the Mother of God in his arms on the streets of the city.

The Kostroma residents recognized the warrior as the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates - from his iconographic image in the cathedral church of Kostroma. The next day, August 16, according to the old style, Prince Vasily Yaroslavich, while hunting, saw this icon on the branches of a tree near the Zaprudnya river. The found shrine was solemnly brought in a religious procession to Kostroma and placed in the cathedral church in the name of the Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates, after which it began to be called Feodorovskaya.

This miraculous icon is associated in Russian history with the election of Mikhail Feodorovich Romanov to the kingdom. They appeared before the mother of young Michael, Elder Martha, and asked her to release her son to the kingdom. After the mother’s first refusal, citing Michael’s youth, the Archbishop of Ryazan took the Feodorovskaya icon of the Mother of God in his hands and addressed Martha and Michael with the following words: “Why did the icons of the Most Holy Lady march with us on a long journey? If you do not obey us, then for the sake of the Mother of God, bow to mercy and do not anger the Lord God.”

Elder Martha could not resist such words: she fell on her knees in front of the Theodore icon and said: “Thy will be done, Lady! I commend my son into Your hands. Guide him on the true path, for the benefit of yourself and the fatherland!” So, in front of this icon, the first tsar from the house of Romanov was elected. From the second half of the 18th century, many members of the royal family, including all Russian emperors, starting with Nicholas I, considered it their duty to visit Kostroma - “the cradle of the House of Romanov” - and venerate the miraculous Theodore Icon of the Mother of God.

The Feodorovskaya icon of the Mother of God never left the church walls; prayer before it never stopped. During the years of persecution of the Church, after the closure and destruction of the Assumption Cathedral, it was first kept in the Church of St. John Chrysostom, and then in the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ on Debra. In 1991, the shrine was moved to the Epiphany-Anastasia Cathedral, which was returned to the Church.

In Rus', many icons of Byzantine origin received their own history, full of miracles, historical victories, and tragedies. Such is the Feodorovskaya icon, which by type of image is related to the “Merciful One”. Its patronage is not limited to any specific cases - it is truly a national shrine. They resort to her as a protector from enemies, the patroness of the hearth, in sorrows and difficulties.

Origin

The iconographic type itself is very ancient; its author is considered to be the Apostle Luke, one of the authors of the Gospel texts. But the origin of the Fedorovskaya icon is quite difficult to determine precisely, because there are several mutually exclusive versions. In any case, the image is closely connected with the princes from the Rurik family. The first mention of the icon in chronicles dates back to the 12th century. Here different variants origin:

  • The image was painted by order of Andrei Bogolyubsky. He stayed in the Gorodets Monastery until it burned to the ground. The icon itself later appeared in another place.
  • Prince Yaroslav ordered the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God as a wedding gift.
  • The icon was found by Prince Yuri in an old chapel, where a monastery was later built in memory of this.

After disappearing, the Feodorovskaya icon was found again by Vasily, the younger brother of Alexander Nevsky. Residents of the city saw how the image was carried through the city by Saint Theodore Stratelates (he had already departed to God by that time). Soon after this, the icon appeared in the forest on a tree in front of the surprised prince. This is how it got its name - in honor of a miraculous phenomenon. It was possible to get it only after a prayer service led by the local bishop.

The second wave of veneration of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God began in the 17th century. The civil strife ended and a king was chosen. It was with this icon that Mikhail Romanov was blessed. On this day a church holiday was established in honor of the image. Since then he has had a special connection with the royal family. The first lists from Kostroma came to Moscow thanks to the nun Martha (the king's mother). Already at the end of the 17th century. a legend was written about the miracles that occurred thanks to the icon.

  • In fact, the Fedorov icon is double-sided. On the back is written St. Paraskeva Friday. Hence, apparently, a version arose that the image was painted as a wedding gift.

It is believed that the icon of the Mother of God of Feodorovskaya helps in the construction family life. People believed that a blessing for marriage in front of this image would definitely bring happiness. Many German aristocratic women, wanting to do good game in Russia, were forced to convert to Orthodoxy. To keep the family strong, the princesses took the middle name “Fedorovna” - like, for example, the wife of the last emperor. They also prayed to her during difficult childbirth.

Fate of the icon

For a long time, the Feodorovskaya icon continued to be in Kostroma. Residents of the city revered her very much, as evidenced by the presence of a heavy golden robe: rubies, diamonds, emeralds decorated the frame, trimmed with rings of precious metals. During the revolution, everything was requisitioned. Fortunately, the icon itself remained in the temple. She was even dismantled, for which she was taken to Moscow.

  • Under the frame, the front part of the ancient image, dating back to the 13th century, has practically been erased by time. The best preserved vestments are those of St. Paraskeva, written on the back.

Since the Church of the Theodore Icon was completely destroyed, it was moved to the Church of St. John, then to the Cathedral of Kostroma. After the war, city residents raised funds for a new frame to decorate the shrine as it deserved. Today the image is in the monastery of St. Anastasia. The revered list was presented to Nicholas, the last emperor of Russia, and was kept in Tsarskoe Selo. Now he is there.

What does the image say?

Although by some miracle the icon has survived to this day, its condition is rather average. The faces of the Virgin Mary and Christ are practically invisible. The composition is very reminiscent of “Vladimir”, with the difference that Christ’s left leg is slightly open. After all, this sometimes happens when a baby clings to his mother - this is precisely the moment shown in icons like Eleus (Tenderness).

The Feodorovskaya icon was of very great importance for the royal family, so its holiday was celebrated very magnificently, despite the fasting time (March). On this day they even served the Liturgy of Basil the Great, which means that vegetable oil and wine were allowed. The modern Church does not distinguish this day in such a special way; there is no relaxation in fasting.

The shrine is closely associated with Russian history, but it is also considered miraculous. Twice the temples where the image was located were completely destroyed by fire, but it remained intact. Another great miracle was revealed during the battle with the Tatars. The enemies who surrounded Kostroma could not withstand the radiance that began to emanate from the face of the Mother of God.

What can you ask for?

As the patroness of brides, the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God will help you find a worthy match. The choice of a groom should be taken very seriously - after all, a church marriage is forever. It is necessary to pray earnestly for God to send a worthy person. Wise parents themselves talk with the candidate for their daughter’s hand in marriage. If the father has doubts, he can appoint probation. Young people should not be offended by this - a real feeling will stand the test of time.

The Akathist to the Feodorov Icon should be read if a woman cannot conceive a child. Of course, you need to visit doctors, take the necessary medications - do everything that is in the power of the person himself. Leave the rest to God, be less nervous, because this also affects the future father. The Lord will definitely send his blessing to those who show patience and perseverance.

Prayers should be constant. This shows God that the person is firm in his intention. After all, sometimes time passes, and he forgets to think about what he recently prayed for at the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God. In this case, perhaps you should just be glad that your wish did not come true. Therefore, you should not be offended or despair if it seems that your appeal has not been heard. Most likely, the Lord is preparing an option that will please the petitioner more.
