Russia against terror

The terrorist attack in Beslan - the taking of hostages at school No. 1 in the city of Beslan (North Ossetia), committed by terrorists on the morning of September 1, 2004 during a ceremonial assembly dedicated to the beginning of the school year

For two and a half days, the terrorists held more than 1,100 hostages (mostly children, their parents and school staff) in the building in the most difficult conditions, denying people even the minimum natural needs.

On the third day, explosions occurred at the school around 1:05 p.m., and a fire later broke out, causing the building to partially collapse. After the first explosions, hostages began to run out of the school, and federal forces launched an assault.

Most of the hostages were freed during the assault, but as a result of the terrorist attack, 334 people, including 186 children, were killed and over 800 were injured.

Short description:

Every year on September 3, Russia celebrates the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism. This memorable date for Russia was established in 2005 by the federal law “On the Days of Military Glory of Russia” and is associated with the tragic events in Beslan (North Ossetia, September 1-3, 2004), when militants seized one of the city schools. As a result of the terrorist attack at school No. 1, more than three hundred people were killed, including more than 150 children.

Terrorist attack in Beslan (September 1-3, 2004) September 3 – Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism Prepared by I.A. Vybornova, teacher of history and social studies, Municipal Budget Educational Institution Secondary School No. 8, Kstovo

The hostage-taking at school No. 1 in the city of Beslan (North Ossetia), committed by terrorists on the morning of September 1, 2004, during a ceremonial ceremony dedicated to the beginning of the school year, is one of the most terrible terrorist attacks in human history. For two and a half days, the terrorists held more than 1,100 hostages in the school building. http://famouspeople.ucoz.ru/news/10_let_tragedi_v_beslane/2014-09-02-415

September 1. 9:05 A group of 32 terrorists in two cars drove into the courtyard of Beslan secondary school No. 1, where at that time a ceremonial assembly dedicated to the Day of Knowledge was taking place. Firing from machine guns, the terrorists surrounded the people gathered in the courtyard and drove them into the school building; some managed to leave the school grounds. Twenty students and school staff who had taken refuge in the boiler room managed to free themselves through a hole in the wall. http://rusidea.org/?a=25090113

Ira Gurieva recalls: (September 1, 2004, she moved to second grade) “...We went out to the line and lined up. I stood behind, I couldn’t see anything. They turned on the music. Suddenly, at some point, the music turns off, shooting starts, some kind of fuss. Everyone ran to the school, me too. They looked for the key to the doors for a very long time, no one could open these doors. And there was a very terrible crush... At some point I turned back and saw people in camouflage with machine guns. But I didn’t understand who it was. It didn’t fit in my head that this could happen. The terrorists were already angry, they started shooting at everyone’s feet... We entered the school, everyone ran around the building, in all directions. I also ran somewhere, they ran into the classroom, and everyone who was in the class was sitting under their desks and screaming. A terrorist came in and said: everyone get out of here... They drove us to the gym..." http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

Ilona Gazdanova recalls: (September 1, 2004, she moved to second grade) “...We were driven into the hall. One man was shot on the very first day... All the windows and doors were walled up. In all classes, desks and chairs were piled against the windows so that nothing could be seen, and so on throughout the entire perimeter of the school. Men were used for this work. Then many of them were killed. They were killed in one class, thrown out from the second floor, they fell down. I experienced a very deep shock, but behaved with restraint, because I understood: it was dangerous to throw a hysteria. I had to hold back for myself, for my mother, although it was very difficult. Some of the terrorists were sitting on the roof, others in the building. They were everywhere. Almost immediately they started hanging bombs, from one basketball hoop to another...”

September 1. 9:25 About 1,100 people were taken hostage, most of them were herded into the gym. Two hostages are killed. Terrorists mined the hall. Most of the hostages were herded into the main gym, while the rest ended up in the gym, showers and cafeteria. Having driven people into the building, the terrorists forced everyone to hand over their photo and video equipment and phones. After this, the hostages were forced to barricade exits and windows. The glass was ordered to be broken so that the security forces could not use gas.

September 1. 11:00–11:30 Mufti of North Ossetia R.I. Valgasov and FSB representative V.G. The Zangionovs headed towards the school with a white flag. The terrorists fired at them, forcing them to return. Through the hostage, the terrorists passed a note in which they stated that they would negotiate only with the President of North Ossetia Alexander Dzasokhov, the President of Ingushetia Murat Zyazikov and pediatrician Leonid Roshal. The Ministry of Internal Affairs created two cordon lines around the school and blocked the area. Residents from nearby houses were evacuated.

September 1. 12:25–12:30 The terrorists handed over a videotape recording what was happening at the school, as well as a note demanding the release of the militants from the Russian prison. Negotiations with terrorists began. September 1. 13:20 - 13:30 The terrorists handed over another note, which contained obviously impossible demands - to withdraw Russian troops from Chechnya, to recognize the independence of Ichkeria. The militants placed children in the windows of the school to prevent the special forces from storming the building.

September 1. 16:00–16:30 An explosion and shots were heard in the school building. The explosion killed 5 or 6 hostages. First telephone contact with terrorists. The terrorists confirmed their previous demands and set out the rules, for violation of which hostages would be shot. September 1. 17:00–17:30 Terrorists fired indiscriminately from machine guns and grenade launchers into the area adjacent to the school. The terrorists threw several bodies of dead hostages out of the school window.

September 1. 17:30–18:00 Six hostages managed to escape. September 1. 20.00-21.00 Leonid Roshal arrived in Beslan. Negotiations on the transfer of food and medicine to the hostages were unsuccessful, as the militants believed that the water and medicine might contain psychotropic substances.

September 2. 7:40 The militants did not allow the child hostages to be replaced with adults. 10:00–12:00 President of the RussNeft company Mikhail Gutseriev contacted the terrorists. He offered money in exchange for hostages. The terrorists rejected this proposal. 12:00–13:00 Terrorists telephoned the Chairman of the Parliament of North Ossetia T.D. Mamsurov. He talked to his son, who was among the hostages.

Nadezhda Ilyinichna Tsaloeva-Gurieva recalls: (history teacher in grades 5–7) “...They [the terrorists] understood perfectly well who they were, why they had come, and what attitude they had towards them. A child from elementary school runs after Ali, one of the leaders of their gang, and says: “Uncle, can I go out for a drink?” He turns to him and says: “What kind of uncle am I to you? I am a bandit and a terrorist, I came to kill you!” […] Or another case. The mother of one boy, a second-grader, was in very bad condition; he had five rubles. He took out this coin, handed it to the terrorist and said: “Take it, uncle, let my mother go, you see how bad she is.” And he proudly said: “Do you know how many of these I have at home?” [...] On September 2, we already had dead children. Not because they were shot. One girl died from a diabetic coma. The boy died of a massive heart attack in his mother’s arms..." http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

September 2. 16:00 Ruslan Aushev, the former president of Ingushetia, with whom the terrorists had previously agreed to negotiate, entered the school building. The leader of the terrorists, Rasul Khuchbarov, gave him a note addressed to the President of Russia, allegedly from Shamil Basayev, demanding the withdrawal of troops from Chechnya and granting it full sovereignty. As a result of negotiations with Aushev, 26 hostages (mothers with children under 2 years old) were released. An agreement was reached on the removal of the bodies of the killed hostages.

Ira Gurieva recalls: (September 1, 2004, she moved to second grade) “...The terrorists were constantly angry that there was such noise in the hall, everyone was talking, crying. They hit the floor with rifle butts and shot in the air to keep everyone silent. On the first day and the first half of the second day we were still afraid of them. But then no one paid attention to the threats; it didn’t matter anymore. There was only one wish: for us to get out of here. Alive, dead - as long as it ends. On the second day we were transferred to another room, the gym. It was very cool there, good. But we were not allowed to go to the toilet. They didn't give us water to drink, but we somehow managed to get there anyway. It was already unbearable to sit, everything hurt. They urinated on themselves... I remember the little boy who died. He was very young, well, two or three years old. And he was constantly thirsty, constantly whining, crying..." http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

September 3. 12:40 Terrorists allowed Emergency Situations Ministry employees to drive a car to the school to remove the bodies of the killed hostages. September 3. 13:03–13:05 Two powerful explosions were heard in the gym. The terrorists opened fire on the Emergency Situations Ministry employees.

Lavrent Perisaev recalls: (head of the search and rescue unit of the Ministry of Emergency Situations) “...At approximately 12:45 on the 3rd, our chief arrived. I was the commander of the unit, and he told me to identify two who would go to pull out the bodies of the dead. Militants shot several people at the school, including an emergency worker and a fire inspector. It was very hot and bodies were thrown out the windows. There was an agreement that they would give the bodies and we could take them. On their part, demands were put forward that only the Ministry of Emergency Situations could take away - no security forces. While everything was being decided, 15 minutes passed, and at about 13.05 explosions occurred. Everyone became wary and the shooting began. They shot from all sides. As soon as the shooting began, all the hostages began to flee from the school through the windows. Dehydrated children jumped out, completely naked, in only their underwear, some in T-shirts, bloody, dirty, running out of the school. Children and adults ran as fast as they could, and they were fired upon. Many were killed in the back. http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

September 3. 13:05–13:25 The surviving hostages began to run out of the gym through the opening created after the explosions. The soldiers rushed to carry people out of the building under indiscriminate, incessant enemy fire. The roof of the school collapsed. The terrorists shot at those escaping and herded the remaining hostages into the dining room. Some of the hostages ended up in the physical education teacher’s room, near the exit from the gym. A physical education teacher snatched a machine gun from one of the militants, but he killed the 74-year-old teacher.

Ira Gurieva recalls: (September 1, 2004, she entered second grade) “...By mistake we were taken to the wrong office, and it was a nightmare. Dead, burnt people, blood. I remember that I was very scared then, I closed my eyes so as not to see it. And near the window, our physical education teacher, Ivan Konstantinovich, fought with the terrorist, snatched his machine gun, and the terrorist shot him. Everyone in the corridor and dining room was also already dead. There was a lot of broken glass on the floor. The terrorists told the children to stand on the windows and shout: “Don’t shoot, there are children here!” There were bars on the windows in the dining room, and one of them had come off the wall. Our other physical education teacher, who remained alive, took it off the windowsill... Below we saw a helmet, apparently of a special forces soldier, and everyone started jumping out. I stood... and was afraid to jump... my mother pushed me out, because a terrorist came into the dining room and fired a machine-gun burst.”

September 3. 13:10 The operational headquarters decided to start a force operation. Snipers from the reconnaissance and surveillance team opened fire to hit the terrorists' firing points to cover the spontaneous evacuation of the hostages. Corridors have been created for the hostages to exit into the safe zone and beyond the cordon. There are four filtration groups of officers from the police department and riot police to control the passage of hostages.

Alexander Betin recalls: (lieutenant colonel, fighter of group “A” - “Alpha”) On September 2 and 3, special forces trained in a similar school building. At 13:05 a command was suddenly received to urgently return to base. “On the way, we learned that two powerful explosions occurred in succession in the gym, resulting in a partial collapse of the roof. According to one version, the tape with which the explosive was attached to the basketball basket failed due to the intense heat. It came off, after which an explosion occurred from the impact. The “on-duty” militant lost his nerve, and he took his foot off the pedal - after which a second series of explosions began. The hostages, who could, began to jump through the windows and run out through the front door into the school yard. The terrorists opened fire on them with machine guns and grenade launchers. Then the order was given to the FSB special forces soldiers to begin the operation...” http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/

Alexander Betin recalls: (lieutenant colonel, fighter of group “A” - “Alpha”) There was actually nowhere to hide from the shots. An open clearing and that's it. We were supposed to drive the armored personnel carrier into the courtyard of the school towards the gym, but at the last moment the soldier driver turned a little to the side and drove into the trees. We found ourselves at the level of the branches, nothing was visible. When I jumped down, I saw that my comrades were no longer there... Behind the house, about twenty steps away, there were people standing. When the first explosions occurred, there was confusion; local residents, trying to help the hostages who had broken through, rushed to the gym. I lay down, they shouted to me: “Run from there, there’s a sniper working in that area.” As it turned out later, Dima Razumovsky from Vympel was killed about fifteen meters from this site. Seeing our guys ahead, he rushed after us. I remember we stood near the wall, we didn’t poke our noses into the courtyard, we hid. There was massive shelling, underbarrel grenade launchers were firing, everything was exploding. And two of us had already gone ahead and lay down in the basement opposite the gym. Then Vitaly Nikolaevich comes running and shouts: “What, they’re up, come follow me!” And we rushed forward after the commander. http://www.gazeta.ru/social/beslan/
