Step 4

Drying and firing

After painting, the stained glass window must be dried. Let us remind you that the drying time also depends on the type of paint. To speed up this process and avoid unwanted smudges, it is better not to move the glass surface until the paint has completely dried.

Note that paints are also divided into 2 types according to the processing method:

1. Burnt. Such paints must undergo heat treatment. A conventional oven preheated to 150 degrees is suitable for this. At this temperature, the stained glass window should be fired for about an hour. The stained glass pattern after such heat treatment can be washed with any means, it will remain just as bright.
2. Unfired. These paints dry at room temperature and to fix them, it is enough to use a clear varnish.

If you are good at drawing techniques, you can make a drawing yourself, you can use ready-made stencils, you can download a graphic image on the Internet (the main thing is that the template drawing must have clear boundaries of all its elements). In the latter case, you should print the selected image onto regular office paper in a 1:1 ratio to the intended design on the glass. ATTENTION! The glass object must be clean, well washed, free from grease or oil, and completely dry by the time the design is applied. In addition, during the work you should avoid leaving fingerprints in the place where the drawing was applied. Step_2 Now we need to transfer the drawing to glass. Secure the design on the back (inner) side of the glass using tape or masking tape. Make sure that it is glued evenly and fits tightly to the surface of the glass. If the shape of a glass object is quite complex (for example, a glass or a jug), and it is not possible to fix the template evenly, you can mark the future design with graphic thin lines on the outside of the object using a regular thin marker.

Step_3 Draw the lines of your template along the outer surface of the glass of the jar using an acrylic outline - a special paint in a tube, which, when applied, leaves smooth, uniform lines in the form of dense “rollers”. These “rollers” not only give graphic clarity to the entire design, but also serve as a kind of bridges for the subsequent application of acrylic paints on glass, which have increased fluidity. ATTENTION! Before applying the contour on glass, make the first test stroke on some foreign surface, for example, on a palette (plate). After the first squeeze of paint in the form of a drop, the tube will begin to produce a straight line.

Step_5 After the contour lines have dried, begin painting the drawing with acrylic paints on the glass. Remember about the increased fluidity of these paints; do not put too much of them on your brush. Blot excess paint from the brush into paper napkins, clean up incorrect strokes using cotton swabs. Before using paints of a different color, thoroughly rinse the brushes in a jar of water and wipe them with paper napkins. ATTENTION! Acrylic paints on glass can be diluted with water. Paints of different colors mix well with each other both on the palette and in the place of the drawing itself.

So, your imagination and diligence, multiplied by the capabilities of the modern paint industry, have created an excellent example of decorative creativity using the glass painting technique.
