We can grow anything,” sighs Vladimir Molyanov, Chairman of the Union of Potato Growers of the Samara Region. - It’s still not profitable to process varieties of potatoes for french fries. There are currently five small factories in the country that do this. Frankly speaking, their profits are small. There are peculiarities in watering and storing these potatoes. And most importantly, there are not so many seeds in our country, because the varieties are imported,” explains Executive Director Potato Union of the Russian Federation Alexey Krasilnikov.

One hassle, in short, with these potatoes. Instead of raw materials for fries, Russian farmers have adapted to processing tubers into another semi-finished product - potato flakes. They are used to make purees or pancakes.

We have succeeded in this industry; we also work for export. I believe that someday Russia will not only feed itself with fries, but will also sell potato straws abroad,” says Andrey Samoshin, head of the Maxim Gorky farm in the Tula region. - But farmers need to create conditions for this.
