Internet GPON: reviews, tariffs, connection. Connection to gpon mgts. GPON - Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks - gigabit passive optical network

GPON from Rostelecom is of interest to many users. Let's get acquainted with this technology and all its features together.

For many years, Internet access was provided via ADSL. This technology is based on the use of copper cable. Specialized equipment for signal processing is also used.

What are the disadvantages of ADSL?

  • Low data transfer speed.
  • There may be problems with the signal; it is not always stable.
  • To connect to the network you need to buy a modem.
  • It is impossible to fully use services that require fast Internet.

Now technology GPON Rostelecom is replacing ADSL. In large cities, the old standard is no longer used. In small settlements there is still a transition to new technology.

There was also a connection via ETTH. This standard compares favorably with ADSL, but was still imperfect. Therefore, specialists worked for a long time to create a new solution.

Features of the technology

How is GPON fundamentally different? This technology is based on the use of fiber optic cables. They significantly outperform copper ones and allow you to increase network stability and data transfer speed.

Let's list the advantages of the technology:

  1. There is no need to buy a Rostelecom GPON terminal and router. If desired, you can connect the cable directly to your computer.
  2. Thousands of clients can be connected to the network without losing signal quality.
  3. The Internet works stably.
  4. It will not depend on the current weather.
  5. Provides high speed. G – designation of gigabit Internet.
  6. Fiber optics can last for many years. The cable does not oxidize during operation.
  7. Based on this technology, new solutions with increased data transfer rates are being developed.
  8. Subscribers do not have problems with further use of the Internet.

GPON has already become the company's basic solution. The technology provides access speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s. This is enough for online games, quickly downloading files and watching videos in high definition.

Rostelecom also offers connection to XPON in large cities. The data transfer speed using this technology has been increased to 200 Mbit/s. This is an excellent parameter; RT was one of the first to master the new standard.

How realistic is the indicated speed?

Many customers are faced with a situation where the actual speed differs from the declared one. You can check it on the website http://www.speedtest.net/ru. Required:

  • Go to the portal.
  • Click on the “Start” button.
  • The system will take the measurement.
  • Once completed, options will be provided.

Usually, the actual speed of Rostelecom differs slightly from the declared one. It depends on the current load on the provider's network. In the evening hours, the parameter may decrease slightly, but in reality this fact is not critical for users.

GPON equipment Rostelecom

There is no need to buy specialized equipment. You can directly connect the cable to your computer and use the Internet. This fact is one of the advantages of GPON.

In what cases is a router needed?

  1. Your laptop does not have RJ-45. Many manufacturers have stopped installing this port because they want to achieve a minimum thickness of the device.
  2. You want to use a wireless network.
  3. You need to connect several devices to the Internet at once.

A Rostelecom GPON router can be purchased not only from the provider, but also in any hardware store. There are many models on the market in different price categories. You will definitely find the right device.

You can view the equipment from the provider on the page https://rt.ru/homeinternet/device_inet. The cost of routers starts from 2100 rubles, it depends on the characteristics of the model.

GPON Rostelecom - tariffs

Attention! Tariffs depend on the specific region. The provider adjusts prices in cities to make its services affordable to customers. Therefore, you will have to check the data on the official website of the company.

Let's consider current tariffs provider using the example of one of the regions:

  • 15 Mbit/s – 450 rub.
  • 50 Mbit/s – 550 rub.
  • 100 Mbit/s – 650 rub.
  • 200 Mbit/s – 750 rub.
  • Gaming – 200 Mbit/s + router + gaming options for 850 rubles.

Setting up GPON Rostelecom

If you purchased equipment from a provider when you connected, then a wizard will perform the setup of the Rostelecom GPON router. After laying the cable, he will install the modem, enter all the parameters and check the operation. You can start using the Internet immediately.

If the equipment was purchased later, you will have to configure it yourself. Necessary:

  1. Install the equipment.
  2. Connect the cable to the WAN and connect to power via the adapter.
  3. Insert the patch cord into the LAN port.
  4. Connect it to your computer.
  5. Go to your PC browser.
  6. Enter the address 192.168.0.1 in the line. It may differ for devices from different manufacturers.
  7. The default login and password is admin.
  8. Go to the “Network” section in the menu.
  9. Select the “WAN” item.
  10. Specify the connection type PPPoE/Russia PPPoE.
  11. Enter your credentials.
  12. Save the settings.

Credentials are login and password. Where can you find them? Typically this information is specified in the contract. If these parameters are not in the documents, then call the contact center.

Is it necessary to connect the router to the computer via a patch cord? Yes, you can’t do without it. But since many modern laptops do not have RJ-45, users experience connection problems.

What should I do?

  • You can purchase an adapter for the USB port. It can be found in hardware stores.
  • Borrow a laptop from a friend that is equipped with RJ-45.
  • Invite a technician and notify him that you do not have a device to perform the setup. He will take a laptop or adapter with him.

The second stage is creating a wireless network. Necessary:

  1. Go to the wireless mode section.
  2. Set the parameters, including the network name, turn on broadcasting and save the settings.
  3. Next, proceed to the protection section.
  4. In it, activate WPA2 Personal.
  5. Create a password for your network.
  6. Click the button to save.

It is mandatory to set a password. It is necessary to protect the network from third-party connections and data interception. The password should not be easy, otherwise it can be cracked using specialized programs. It's better to come up with a complex code and write it down in a notepad.

To avoid entering a password, you can use WPS. On your device, select a network connection via this standard. Find the WPS button on the router case and click on it. The modem transmits secret codes to automatically connect the device.

GPON technology

Technology development does not stand still. Every year there are more and more profitable offers for connecting high-quality television and high-speed Internet. Among all the proposals, you should pay attention to GPON - gigabit passive optical network. This network is connected via a fiber optic cable, which significantly increases the quality of data reception and Internet speed. This is due to the fact that optical fiber has a large bandwidth, the analogues of which you will not find with any other wired or wireless connection.

The main advantage of GPON is its speed. Also among the advantages it is worth highlighting that such a cable does not have any electromagnetic radiation. This technology is constantly being improved and makes the transfer of information more and more convenient and high-speed.

Due to the fact that such a network has a high-speed connection, it becomes possible to install additional services. High quality reception of data will help install video surveillance in the apartment. Due to this, you can always see what is happening in your apartment, even if you are in the office or in another city. To do this, it will be enough to connect to the Internet on any device and receive images from CCTV cameras. For greater security, it is also possible to connect a wireless security alarm.

Japan, many European countries and the USA have already switched to a fiber-optic network. This also confirms the advantage of such a connection over others.

Along with the improvement of network equipment, the Internet service provider, as well as its consumer, are developing and modernizing technologies for manufacturing signal transmission lines. Recently emerging passive optical networks are gradually replacing signal transmission lines over copper wires. The new technology is being actively implemented by major Internet operators.

Rostelecom GPON lines have already been installed in many large and small settlements of the country. They are distinguished by high throughput, high speed of information transfer and operational reliability.

The letters PON in the acronym stand for “Passive Fiber Optic Network”, and the first letter G (Gigabit) determines the exchange rate of the network, made using this technology to transmit information at enormous speeds. Networks are called passive due to the absence of intermediate amplifying (active) nodes along the path of transmitting pulsed information from the provider to the subscriber and back.

Using GPON technology Rostelecom exchange is carried out via a cable consisting of individual fiber optic cores of a certain amount, placed in a polyurethane sheath. Depending on the laying conditions, the optical fiber is additionally protected by an armored sheath made of wire or metal foil.

This protection is performed to eliminate external mechanical influences on the optical fiber, and not to prevent electromagnetic interference from affecting the line. Fiber optics are immune to them. All exchange along the optical line in Rostelecom is carried out by light pulses. Let's look at how PON technology works.

In the provider's backbone cable, the number of light-conducting cores is more than 100. To create a branched network, passive splitters (optical dividers) are used, branching the general Rostelecom cable into separate “streams”. Each of them is subsequently also capable of being shared through its own splitter to provide information to a certain number of subscribers of the Rostelecom provider.

Splitters do not contain active components for operation, which does not require supplying a supply voltage to them. This construction determines the high degree of reliability of the Gipon fiber optic network. If breaks occur due to external influences, operability is restored by using welding using a special technology performed by trained Rostelecom personnel.

Optical fiber today is capable of transmitting light pulses without loss of information quality over a distance of up to 20 km without additional amplification.

Benefits of fiber optics

Compared to lines that use metallic copper wires to exchange information, conventional twisted pair Ethernet has the following advantages:

Disadvantages of fiber optics

Some disadvantages of fiber optic lines have been identified:

  1. the fragility of the light propagation medium material, which is quartz, similar to glass;
  2. increased requirements for the qualifications of personnel installing fiber optics, with the use of special tools by employees;
  3. the inability to repair the line in the event of a break (you have to cut out and replace an entire section of the optical fiber);
  4. loss of transparency by glass during long-term use, the appearance of microcracks in its structure;
  5. the use of a limited range of equipment capable of receiving and decoding a signal transmitted using GPON optical fiber.

The principle of connecting to Rostelecom

In different regions of the operator's operation, Rostelecom's technical service delivers GPON Internet using different connection schemes. In the case of FTTH, optical fiber is routed directly to each subscriber's apartment. A device is installed in a residential area that converts the signal from Rostelecom into a clear Ethernet interface. It is called ONT - “Optical Terminal”.

Based on the properties of the optical fiber when laying the cable, a path is selected that has a minimum number of bends, especially at sharp angles. This means that its extent indoors is limited. Rostelecom installers place the new device in close proximity to the fiber optic input into the consumer’s residential area. Since the terminal requires AC power via an adapter for its operation, the subscriber ensures that there is a household outlet at the location where the terminal is installed. Laying Ethernet cables to wired home network participants local network made by the user at his own discretion.

When connecting FTTB by Rostelecom employees, optical fiber is laid to the building or entrance to the house. Intermediate equipment for converting the light flux into an electrical signal is installed in a special protected box or box. Maintaining it in good condition and carrying out preventive maintenance is the responsibility of Rostelecom's technical support service. After the conversion process, the incoming fiber optic Internet is delivered to the consumer via twisted pair Ethernet wires.

Fiber Optic Equipment

It can be purchased at Rostelecom sales departments or rented with a monthly rental payment. An option to purchase in installments is possible. In this case, a corresponding agreement is concluded stipulating all the conditions for using ONT.

The Eltex NTE-2 model was offered by Rostelecom to its first subscribers connected to optics using GPON technology. This terminal has minimal functionality and can be used in transparent bridge mode for one desktop computer (PC) and one set-top box STB when using IPTV on a TV connected to it.

The terminal does not have its own IP address on the network, internal software(software) and its own interface. The sample proposed by Rostelecom does not have an internal routing scheme. The device does not have a built-in module wireless communication, is not capable of performing functions like a wifi router does. The task of Eltex NTE-2 is to convert Rostelecom's optical signal into an Ethernet signal.

You can create a full-fledged home local network using Eltex by connecting an additional Ethernet router with a cable with two RJ-45 terminal connectors to the Port 0 connector on the rear panel of the NTE-2 terminal. The other RJ-45 connector of the connecting cable is connected to the WAN port used in conjunction with the router.

As fiber optics and PON networks develop, Rostelecom is expanding the range of devices provided to consumers. One of the latest models is the self-tuning ONT NTP-RG-1402G-W. The device has full functionality necessary to create a home local network. There are four Ethernet ports providing gigabit speeds. Two of them work for high speed internet Rostelecom, the other two are designed for IP television. There are two more ports for connecting IP telephony devices. The built-in wireless module is used to create an 802.11n Wi-Fi network access point at speeds up to 300 Mbps.

Network equipment settings

When using ONT Eltex NTE-2, the Rostelecom Internet connection is configured on a computer whose network card is connected by an Ethernet cable with RG-45 terminal connectors to the Port 0 connector of the terminal. The PC network card is configured to receive IP addresses and DNS server in automatic mode.

In order for the connection to the Internet to occur, Rostelecom’s network connection is configured to PPPoE. There is an input requirement for it when setting up data from the agreement concluded with the provider: “Username/password”.

In this way, you have to connect every time you turn on the computer if you want to visit Internet sites from Rostelecom. Setting up a wireless wifi connection is out of the question. This ONT simply does not have such a function.

In case of purchase GPON subscriber from Rostelecom ONT NTP-RG-1402G-W will only have to be manually configured Wi-Fi network. The provider's equipment already has a virtual user interface tied to the MAC address of its fiber optic router. Account settings are made by the Rostelecom system administrator. Manual Wi-Fi setup performed by the user in the router interface. To enter it, the web browser used is opened on a PC connected to the LAN port.

The IP address of the ONT is entered into the address line, depending on the firmware it has the value 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Press Enter on the PC keyboard. In the authorization window, enter the default device login and password: user/user, and click the “Submit” stencil.

On the general settings page, open the Wi-Fi tab and click on Basic. In its expanded window, check the boxes for enabling the wireless connection and enabling wireless multicast (WMF) for streaming IPTV. Then we come up with a network name and enter it in the SSID field. Finally, execute the “Apply” command.

To protect the network from outside interference, select in the “Security” tab the parameters for checking network authentication with the selected name - Mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK, as well as the type of information encryption: AES. Finally, we write an individually created password, consisting of a sequence of Latin letters and numbers of no less than 8 and no more than 15. The setup is completed by executing the “Apply” command.

To activate the entered data, you will need to restart the terminal. It is performed after selecting the “Reboot” item in the “Management” tab and then executing the “Reboot” command.

Services and tariffs for GPON Internet

Users connected via the provider's optical fiber have access to the Triple Play service. It includes a package of services from Rostelecom:

If a subscriber refuses any of Rostelecom’s services, the remaining ones will continue to work without any restrictions or loss of quality. Using hardware models recommended by the provider provides significant benefits to its users:

  1. free setup of Rostelecom during installation and future maintenance;
  2. warranty for the models used;
  3. warranty repair or complete replacement if it is impossible to eliminate the malfunction;
  4. the ability to configure remotely through the company’s contact center.

All listed privileges are lost in the event of a non-compliance with the user’s equipment, which is not included in the list recommended by the provider. Elimination of all problems that arise is resolved by the subscriber at his own expense.

Users are interested in how much it costs to use fiber optics. To answer, the subscriber must contact the Rostelecom sales department. The value of the cost in terms of pricing, tariffs in force in different regions, are determined only on the basis of documents from the regional provider Rostelecom. The general trend is this: the smaller the settlement and the further it is located to the east from the center of Russia, the more subscribers pay for using fiber optics. It should be noted that the company carries out constant promotions using the results of data analysis on GPON.

Many Russian users access the Internet, taking advantage of one of the latest communication technologies - GPON. The infrastructure built on the basis of this standard is actively used by leading Russian and global telecommunications companies. What are the features of this technology? What are its advantages over competitive solutions?

Basic facts about the technology

What is GPON technology, connection to which is becoming widespread in many large cities of Russia? This communication channel is a passive fiber-optic network capable of providing Internet access at very high speed- hundreds of megabits/sec. At the same time, this technology allows the provider to provide the subscriber with a large number of related services - IP telephony, digital television, etc. Many experts believe that GPON is the most promising technology in terms of providing Internet access.

The fact is that, unlike many other communication technologies, digital data when using GPON technology is transmitted not through a metal conductor, but through a light channel. This is typically a microscopic fraction of a second faster. But on the scale of a large city or region, the difference in data exchange speed can be quite noticeable. Also, transmitting a light pulse, as a rule, requires less energy than transmitting a signal through a metal wire. This, as many experts believe, is due to a number of factors that predetermine economic efficiency GPON technology.

The maximum length of a fiber optic cable within which a stable signal can be transmitted is 20 km; technologies are being developed that can increase this figure to 60 km. The global spread of GPON technology began in the mid-90s, facilitated by the consolidated efforts of several of the world's leading telecommunications companies.

Tariffication

What are the tariffs offered by modern Russian providers using GPON? Everything, of course, depends on the specific region of the Russian Federation and city. As a rule, in the European part of Russia the Internet is much cheaper, regardless of the communication technology used, than in Far East. But if we take the tariffs for the regions of the Middle Belt, then we can focus on approximately these values.

Megabits inexpensively

For Internet access at a speed of about 10-12 megabits/sec, the provider will ask about 300-400 rubles per month. If the user needs a larger resource, for example, 20-25 megabits, it will cost approximately 500-700 rubles. The pattern in determining the tariff “formula” is approximately the following - the more expensive the monthly subscription fee, the less the cost of an individual “megabit”.

Many providers provide their subscribers with the necessary equipment for free use. Moreover, in many cases, the access service provider is ready to send a wizard to the client’s home to set up the devices, who will also not charge anything. That is, payment for the tariff is actually all the costs that are borne by the subscriber. At least in this format, a service is provided based on GPON from MGTS (reviews from many subscribers contain unequivocally positive assessments regarding this option) - one of the largest and most actively developing providers in Russia in terms of mastering new technology.

Comparison with ADSL

Before Internet access began to actively spread, the typical communication standard used by Russian providers was ADSL access. In principle, even now in many cities it is considered the main one. Even in the Russian capital, many subscribers are connected through it. The main advantages of ADSL in comparison with GPON are that Internet access can be organized on the basis of an existing telephone line.

No additional installation work, as a rule, is not required. In turn, ADSL, as a rule, is significantly inferior to the new technology in terms of speed. If Internet access at 20-25 megabits per second for GPON is rather the norm, in the case of using ADSL it is in most cases an exception.

Economy option

However, in comparison with indicators for GPON, Internet tariffs via ADSL are usually lower. And this is more profitable for many users, since the speeds that are available when using older technology, namely 3-5 megabits per second, are enough for them to complete most of their tasks. This indicator, in particular, allows you to comfortably load any web pages, watch videos, listen to music, and communicate on Skype. Setting up a GPON connection, on the one hand, can be somewhat more complicated than the corresponding steps when working with an ADSL channel. This may apply to both software and hardware. However, as we have already said, in many cases the provider provides its subscribers with the appropriate services completely free of charge.

Disadvantages of GPON

What disadvantages of the technology in question do experts note? Some experts, for example, believe that the declared speed of 300 or more megabits per second for individuals cannot be achieved in most cases. Simply because the majority of modems adapted for using fiber optics at home (and almost all of those provided free of charge by providers) purely technologically cannot transmit data via Wi-Fi at speeds higher than 70-80 megabits. While for many Moscow users it is advisable to use the connection only in a wireless format. Although in some statements by MGTS representatives, GPON access for metropolitan subscribers will be provided through more modern Wi-Fi modems, in particular those operating at a frequency of 5 GHz. While most current ones operate at 2.4 GHz.

Economic factor

Among the economic disadvantages noted by experts that are characteristic of GPON-based networks (reviews of many confirm this), despite the low energy costs for signal transmission, the equipment necessary for organizing a full-fledged infrastructure is expensive and pays off rather slowly. Therefore, according to experts, it is advisable to introduce such technologies when the provider is confident that it will be possible to connect a sufficiently large number of clients to GPON. At the same time, according to calculations by a number of analysts, providers who have timely invested in modernizing the communication infrastructure, in particular in favor of switching to GPON, can subsequently reduce operating costs associated with maintaining the functionality of networks by several times.

Competitive solutions

What could be the alternatives to the GPON technology used by MGTS? Among these, experts note the DOCSIS standard, which is actively used by another Moscow provider, Akado. This technology involves the “hybrid” use of fiber optic channels - in terms of organizing communications between the provider’s servers and subscribers’ homes, as well as television cables laid in many metropolitan apartments - as user sections of the corresponding scheme for providing Internet access. The main advantage of this technology over GPON (reviews from many Akado users focus on this aspect) is that there is no need for noisy installation work in the apartment.

The typical access speed provided to metropolitan subscribers today is about 110 megabits, but technically this figure can be increased to 400, as many experts note.

Cable or fiber optic

Another advantage of DOCSIS over GPON (reviews from IT specialists confirm this) is that it is much better protected from possible damage. It often happens, for example, that homeowners accidentally step on the optical fiber or place furniture, causing the wire to quickly fail. Often this is not a “warranty case” - a technician from the provider, of course, will come, but this time not for free. In addition, a coaxial TV cable can be configured quite easily on your own, based on the convenience of its placement in the apartment. For example, if two of its segments are formed, they can be connected to each other using a simple coupling. With optical fiber in this sense, as a rule, it is more difficult.

New confrontation between giants

Another solution that could be a competitor to GPON from MGTS (reviews from many experts at least contain positive assessments regarding its prospects) is FTTB technology. It is used by VimpelCom, the structure that owns the Beeline brand.

By the way, it can be noted interesting fact: MGTS is a subsidiary of another Russian operator cellular communication, MTS. GPON, competing with FTTB, to some extent continues the confrontation between MTS and Beeline in their traditional markets. The access speed when using the technology in question is about 100 megabits. At the same time, as some experts note, it is technically possible to increase the figure to

We also note that MGTS is far from the only Russian communications service provider using promising fiber-optic technology. Rostelecom and many regional providers are actively connecting their subscribers to the Internet based on GPON.

GPON and the Russian communications market

Let's look at the marketing aspects of introducing GPON in Russia. As we noted above, GPON from MGTS can be considered one of the leading providers in the Russian Federation providing Internet access (reviews of this service in large quantities found on thematic portals) is a service within which Muscovites can access online at a speed of about 300-500 megabits/sec. More than 3 million subscribers in the Russian capital have the technical ability to connect to the network using the new technology. At the same time, the demand for the service is supported not so much by the need for high speed as such, as some experts note, but by the fact that users from the Russian Federation are accustomed to using several devices at once to access the Internet - a PC, a tablet, a smartphone. Internet television is also in high demand. Therefore, in aggregate, Moscow users need a decent access speed so that there are enough channel resources for each of the devices used.

The plans are ambitious

MGTS, a subsidiary of MTS, plans to deploy GPON networks in terms of maximum geographical presence in the capital by 2017. There is evidence that the corresponding period may be adjusted - the company will complete the tasks faster, in 2015. MGTS expects that the campaign related to the transfer of Internet access infrastructure to GPON technology will pay for itself within 7 years.

GPON technology (reviews from many IT experts are very positive in this aspect) can become an effective basis for the deployment of other communication standards. Such as, for example, 4G Internet in the LTE standard. Both technological and economic aspect. There is evidence that the GPON infrastructure from MGTS (reviews from many market analysts confirm this) is going to be used by MTS, which is actively implementing 4G standards. In statements by representatives of this brand, voiced in some media, there is a thesis that MTS will become the only metropolitan operator that will build a 4G network entirely based on fiber optic channels.

Is GPON more promising?

According to some analysts, companies that use GPON technology - Rostelecom, MGTS and other providers - have at their disposal a resource that still has somewhat greater development potential than when using most competing communication standards. This is largely due to the fact that the level of competition in the GPON segment is still slightly lower than, for example, among providers using the FTTB concept.

GPON in the global market

As an Internet access technology, GPON (reviews from many experts confirm this) is somewhat less widespread in Russia than, for example, in Western countries. Although in last years Providers operating in the Russian Federation, as many analysts believe, have taken several serious steps forward, overcoming the possible lag behind their foreign colleagues in mastering new technology. At the same time, it can be noted that standards such as DSL are still among the most actively used in the world. At the same time, the global growth of GPON connections in the last few years has been about 20% annually.

Many experts are sure that even in the most technologically developed countries there is no consensus on which broadband access technology is the most effective. In many countries in Asia and the Middle East, GPON technology is being implemented very actively - in a number of countries it occupies more than half of the market in the corresponding communications segment. In Europe, Sweden is recognized as one of the leaders in the implementation of GPON standards. At the same time, according to a number of analysts, the Russian market is quite capable of achieving comparable indicators reflecting the level of implementation of new technology.
