We tried to highlight the main points thanks to which this edition of the “Big Loop” will be remembered for a long time

The Tour de France ended last Sunday. Once again, the most prestigious cycling race in the world did not turn out to be the most exciting, but a lot of interesting events still happened. The 104th “Big Loop” provided quite a lot of ground for thought and analysis. After each grand tour, we publish material dedicated to the results of the completed race, in which we summarize the results and share our observations. The 2017 Tour de France was no exception.

1. Froome's fourth victory. What's next?

The best “super multi-day racer” of our time has won once again. Chris Froome conquered the Big Loop for the fourth time, surpassing Philippe Thys, Louison Bobet and Greg LeMond in the number of race wins. Just one title is enough for the Briton to equal the record holders for the most victories in the general classification - Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Froome's fans have no doubt that their idol will not only win the Tour for the fifth time, but will also become the sole record holder of the race. Are the future prospects of the Team Sky leader so bright? Let's try to figure it out.

Froome's fourth victory was the hardest. For the first time, he won the Tour without winning a stage, his advantage over Uranus, who finished second, was less than a minute, with such a small gap Chris had never won the French Grand Tour before. Do not forget that the victory in the overall standings of the Big Loop was his first of the season. Froome performed unsuccessfully in the spring and had a lackluster performance at the Criterium Dauphine. Many experts noted that the Briton was not forcing his preparations, as he was planning another entry into the Tour de France + Vuelta double. This is true, there was no point in gaining peak condition for Froome early, but even many admirers of his talent noted that they expected him to perform more confidently at the Tour, even taking into account the fact that he still had the Vuelta. Chris did not have an advantage over Rigoberto Uran and Romain Bardet in the mountains, and Fabio Aru looked like a serious competitor until he fell ill with bronchitis. But Richie Porte, who was considered Froome’s main competitor, left the race prematurely. We can also remember Quintana, who decided to take on the Giro + Tour double this year and suffered a crushing failure.

IN next year Froome turns 33 years old, an age for cycling that is by no means critical, including for a “general manager,” but it is generally accepted that top scores cyclists show at the age of 28-32 years. Will the British begin to slowly lose ground? This question is difficult to answer. The history of cycling, even on modern stage, knows many cases when racers showed their best results at a very young age or, conversely, at a very mature age. Italian Damiano Cunego won the Giro in 2004 at the age of 22, but since then he has never even finished in the top three. American Chris Horner, in turn, won the 2013 Vuelta when he was almost 42.

Froome's support group will undergo major changes next year. Mikel Landa already has one foot in Movistar, they say that his namesake Nieve has already agreed to move to Orica - Scott. How will the mighty Team Sky compensate for their losses? Surely the team is counting on Wout Pools, who failed to get into better shape before the Tour due to a knee injury. Perhaps other mountain “gregars” will be invited to the team.

2. Quintana's failure and uncertain future

Last year, the strongest racer from South America barely made it onto the podium at the Tour de France, but in September he managed to defeat Froome at the Vuelta. After analyzing the results of last year's grand tours, Quintana and the Movistar team headquarters decided to try to compete at the Giro and Tour this year. Quintana expected to conquer both races, but noted that he still plans to reach his peak form on the Tour. Despite such an ambitious goal, Nairo was not modest in the spring and competed quite actively and successfully in weekly races. The Italian Grand Tour was not a big setback for Quintana; he took second place, although he could have finished even outside the top three. Many noted that the Colombian did not demonstrate his best qualities and believed that everything was going according to plan, hoping for Nairo's peak form at the Tour. However, the Great Loop was the worst grand tour of his career. The Movistar rider did not look too strong in the first stages, and in the third week he began to lose an indecent amount of money, finishing the Tour in 12th place.

At the end of the race, many began to remember that of his last five grand tours, Quintana performed properly only at the 2016 Vuelta. There was talk that he started competing for the overall grand tour championships too early; this happened back in 2013, at the age of 23. Even Movistar general manager Eusebio Unzue noted that he has not seen any progress from Quintana in the last two years. Nairo's father blamed Unsue himself for his son's failures, saying that the manager had chosen a calendar that was too difficult for his son. In the wake of all these statements, a rumor appeared that the Colombian was going to leave the team, although his contract expires only at the end of next year.

It seems that Quintana will not go anywhere before the end of his current contract; in cycling, riders are rarely bought out, especially not as expensive as Quintana. Next year will be key for Nairo, either Quintana will return to his previous level or continue his decline. Mikel Landa is moving to his team and now the Colombian will still have to fight for the status of the main “super multi-day player” of the Spanish team.

3. Mikel Landa - martyr or anti-hero?

The Basque “miner” started the race as one of Froome’s assistants, nothing more. He did not have any special position in Team Sky and before the Tour no one was sure that Mikel would become Froome’s strongest “gregary” in the mountains.

Landa's quest for the Giro overall classification was unsuccessful, he was hampered by that same ill-fated collapse on the ninth stage, which prevented not only him, but also his teammate Geraint Thomas. By the third week, the Basque had come to his senses, won the mountain classification and one of the stages, while having excellent chances to take two more stages.

Landa gradually got involved in the Tour, there was nothing surprising about it. It was hard to hope that a rider after the Giro would be among the best in the first stages of the Big Loop. He had a rather weak first mountain stage on the Planche de Belle Fille, but the stage was not too difficult, and Mikel did not lose much time on it. Subsequently, Landa's form began to improve, he slowly began to advance in the overall standings, but no one talked about his personal chances until, at the 12th stage, he suddenly turned out to be stronger than his captain. Froome lost the yellow jersey at the stage with the finish in Peyragude, and the Basque looked very confident. Many people that day agreed that Landa could have won that stage if he had not had to work for Froome. After that stage, Landa found himself in seventh place in the general classification, just under three minutes behind Fabio Aru. The next day, the team headquarters released the Basque into the lead, and after the 13th stage, Landa was about a minute behind the leader of the general classification. Subsequently, Mikel was again at Froome's disposal. At the 18th stage with the finish at Izoyar, he was allowed to attack, but soon the captain of Team Sky accelerated behind him. As a result of Frum's active actions, Landa on Izoyar not only did not win back time from Bardet and Aru, but even lost a little. The Giro 2015 medalist lacked the freshness to finish the acceleration. Conversations about Landa died down for two days, only to flare up with renewed vigor after the final time trial, as a result of which the Team Sky rider remained in fourth place in the overall standings, losing only one second to Romain Bardet.

Landa himself noted after the race that he was very disappointed with his fourth place. Mikel is confident he could have finished in the top three without interfering with Chris Froome's plans. Surely the Basque often remembers the 13th stage, at which they let him go ahead, but at the same time they held him back a little, not allowing Kwiatkowski to help him in the breakaway, and in the last kilometers the Pole, together with Froome, catching up with Dan Martin, completely reduced Landa’s advantage. Landa was also very dissatisfied with the results of the 18th stage.

In numerous interviews in recent days, Mikel has made no secret of the fact that he is going to leave Team Sky and no longer wants to work on the grand tours for other riders. It is worth noting that this is already the second time in the Basque’s career when during a “super stage race” he found himself at some stages noticeably stronger than his leader, the first time this happened to him in Astana at the Giro 2015. Landa will be one of the leaders of Movistar next year.

Opinions vary widely regarding Landa's performance at the 2017 Tour. Some people openly feel sorry for him and complain that he was not allowed to prove himself, while others, on the contrary, mercilessly criticize him, believing that he should not even have thought about personal ambitions while playing on the same team with Chris Froome. So who is Mikel Landa? A sufferer or “gregaries” who have forgotten about their direct responsibilities?

4. The fall of Cavendish and the scandalous disqualification of Sagan

A lot has already been said and written about the incident that occurred at the fourth stage of the Tour. We didn’t stand aside either, having arranged. There is simply no point in revisiting the incident that happened on the streets of Vittel, but it is simply impossible not to note it as one of the main events of the race.

Three weeks have passed since then. Peter Sagan took his disqualification calmly. He even flew to Paris to celebrate the completion of the “Big Loop” with the team, showing off his new fashionable hairstyle and beard.

Mark Cavendish in the first days after the incident in in social networks attacked by embittered Sagan fans. Now the situation has calmed down, and he is slowly recovering from his injuries, and the judges indirectly admitted that they had gotten carried away by reviewing video replays, which caused a storm of indignation in the cycling community. Did they really not watch the video during the disqualification?

Episode 104 Tour de France starts on July 1, 2017 in Dusseldorf with a 14 km individual time trial. laid counterclockwise through Vosges, Jura, Pyrenees, Massif Central V Alps and will pass through the territory of 4 states: Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

The first mountain test will be La Planche des Belles Filles. Next, across the plains of France, the peloton will travel west to Pyrenees and, turning east through the Massif Central, rushes into the Alps to the sky-high peaks Col d'Izoard and Col du Galibier. At the penultimate stage, participants will face a 22.5 km individual time trial in the vicinity of Marseille on the Mediterranean coast. The 2017 Tour de France will, according to tradition, end with the “friendship” stage with the finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 23.

The 2017 Tour de France will consist of 9 flat, 5 mid-mountain and 5 mountain stages, 2 individual time trials with a total length of 36.5 km and two rest days.

At the finish of the highest category climb Col d'Izoard Mountain points will double.
In the Tour de France, bonus seconds will be awarded at the finish of all stages (except time trials) for a win and two podium places (10th, 6th and 4th for the first three places respectively).

The organizers proposed an atypical route for the French Grand Tour, different from the editions recent years, without emphasis on time trials, as in previous years, when the total length of individual time trials reached 100 km. There is also no emphasis on mountain stages. Previously, the organizers could put 3 stage finishes in the mountains of the highest category and a couple of mountain finishes in the 1st category climb.

In this edition of the Tour de France, many of the difficult mountains are located far from the finish, which should provoke the generals to attack in advance - on the ascent and on the descent. The organizers took care of the sprinters, who were offered 200-kilometer flat stages.

01.07. Saturday. Stage 1: Düsseldorf - Düsseldorf (ITT), 14 km

Dusseldorf(German) Düsseldorf, the capital of the district of Düsseldorf and the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) hosts the start of the stage and the Grand Départ of the entire Tour de France for the first time. The French Grand Tour starts in Germany with an individual time trial.

The flat cutting is laid across Düsseldorf along the Rhine embankments with a length of 14 km, crossing two bridges. Racers will have to go through 13 dangerous turns.

From the start at Stokümer Kirchstrasse ( Stockumer Kirchstrasse) participants will travel south through a 4.3 km straight section along the embankment, and after two bends will travel west for approximately 1 km on the Oberkasseler bridge ( Oberkasseler) on the opposite bank of the Rhine. Having descended from the bridge and turned south, after another kilometer of distance the participants will turn southeast and drive along the kilometer-long Rheinknibrücke bridge ( Rheinkniebrücke). Next, descend from the bridge and turn to the northeast, then turn to the east and after 600 m of the straight section turn to the north.

Having reached the intermediate time cutoff located at elevation. 8.1 km, riders will continue heading north. After 1.8 km with four 90-degree turns, the track will pass under the Oberkasseler bridge ( Oberkasseler) and further along the same embankment along which the participants drove from the start, only to the north, along the smooth turn of the Rhine River to the northwest.

The performance will be affected by weather conditions, which can change along the route of the stage, as well as over time, for example, the wind from the Rhine can either help or hinder the riders. The estimated time that the racers will spend completing the distance, according to the organizers' calculations, will be from 16 minutes to 19 minutes. The first cyclist starts at 15:15 CET, last year's winner starts last - Chris Froome, V 18:32 CET. Time limit 25%.

A similar table-shaped cutting, 14 km long, laid out from north to south, and then from south to north, with long straight roads and a series of turns, is suitable for general cutters. The stage winner receives the first yellow jersey of the leader of the Tour de France 2017, as well as the green jersey of the leader in the points classification.

The current world time trial champion, the German racer, can be called the favorites Tony Martina, Slovenian Primoza Roglic, European champion in the time trial of the Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo, Dutch Jos Van Emden, Swiss Stefan Küng. Among the general division workers, we note Chris Froome, Alberto Contador, Alejandro Valverde, Richie Porta, Geraint Thomas and others.

Sprinters can also show good results in the time trial, in the hope of winning the yellow jersey at the next stage due to bonification, for example, the German Marcel Kittel, Australian Michael Matthews, Slovak Peter Sagan and others.

Some general miners will have to minimize their backlog, e.g. Nairo Quintana, Roman Barda, Jakob Fuglsang, Fabio Aru, Simon Yates and others. The gaps between general officers will reach 1 minute.

02.07. Sunday. Stage 2: Dusseldorf - Liege, 203.5 km

Dusseldorf will host the start of the 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2017, the route of which runs through Germany and Belgium, and the terrain is suitable for sprinters.

From the start, the route will lead to the east, and immediately there will be attacks from riders who will begin to fight for the opportunity to become the first owner of the pea jersey, since at 6.5 km of the route there is the top of a 4th category climb - the first category climb of the Tour de France 2017.

Cote de Grafenberg, 4th category lift, length 1.4 km, 45-113 m, drop 68 m, average gradient 4.5%, maximum gradient 6%. Having skirted Düsseldorf from the north, the riders will head west across the plain to Mönchengladbach, where they will compete in the first intermediate sprint of the 2017 Tour de France. Further south and after 83 km, at 154 km of the route of the 2nd stage, the French Grand Tour will leave German territory and move to Belgium.

Then there will be a descent to the very finish in Liege(fr. Liège, the administrative center of the province of Liege, Wallonia region, Belgium), where riders will enter from the southeast. 3 km before the finish there is a dangerous right turn, then a smooth left turn and the final 2 kilometers - a long straight line running from southeast to northwest.

According to the scenario of the classic sprint stage, at the finish line we should see the struggle of the best sprinters. The main contenders can be called German sprinters - Marcel Kittel And Andre Greipel, current world champion Slovakian Peter Sagan, French Arnaud Demara And Nasser Buanni, British Mark Cavendish, Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen, Norwegian sprinter Alexandra Kristoff and others.

03.07. Monday. Stage 3: Verviers - Longwy, 212.5 km

Verviers(fr. Verviers, province of Liege, region of Wallonia, Belgium) hosts the start of the 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2017. This is a mid-mountain stage, spread across 3 countries, where riders will cross the Ardennes from north to south and finish on a category 3 climb.

From Verviers, riders will head south and begin the climb to the summit of Cote de Sart, a category 4 climb, 2.8 km long, 400-543 m, 143 m drop, average gradient 5.1%, maximum gradient 8% . The summit, located at 18 km, is the highest point of the route of the 3rd stage. At 89 km of the route there is an intermediate sprint, after which, after driving along the plain, they descend to the foot of Cote de Wiltz, category 4 climb, length 3.1 km, 319-467 m, drop 148 m, average gradient 4.8% , maximum gradient 7%. The top of the climb is located in the middle of the route of the 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2017.

After completing the climb and a 10 km section on the plain, riders will go downhill to the foot of Cote d'Eschdorf, category 3 climb, length 2.3 km, 300-499 m, drop 199 m, average gradient 9.3% , the maximum gradient of 14% is the first 3rd category lift at the 2017 Tour de France.

The next 64 km of slightly rugged plains will lead riders to the border of Luxembourg and France. Having entered France, riders will turn west and overcome the Cote de Villers-la-Montagne, category 4 climb, length 1.1 km, 356-414 m, drop 58 m, average gradient 5.2 %, maximum gradient 8%. The top of the climb is located 15 km before the finish.

At this point, the breakaway will most likely be caught and the teams of the main favorites of the stage will begin to prepare for the assault on the final climb of the 3rd stage - Cote des Religieuses, climb of the 3rd category, length 1.6 km, 286-379 m, drop 93 m, average gradient 5.8%, maximum gradient 11%.

The first stage finish of the 2017 Tour de France in a category climb is located in Longwy or Lonwy(fr. Longwy, Meurthe-et-Moselle department, Grand-Est region or Grand-Eastern region).
