What is fiberglass composite reinforcement actually made of?

Answers CEO LLC "Obninsk Composite Materials Plant" Klimenko Maxim Vladimirovich:

"Good afternoon. Firstly, I would like to immediately note that the products of Obninsk Composite Materials Plant LLC have been produced for 3 years only from the best binding materials and foreign-made fiberglass.
We put "at the forefront" product quality, therefore, agreements have been concluded with world leaders for the production of raw materials for the production of composite materials. What is fiberglass composite reinforcement actually made of?

It is the main material in the production of composite fiberglass reinforcement. The Jushi company (Yushi or Jushi) produces glass rovings based on modified silane lubricants No. 386 and No. 312, which are specially developed and successfully used together in the production of composite fiberglass products using the pultrusion method.
Glass roving manufactured by Jushi is currently the highest quality product on the fiberglass market. It can withstand enormous breaking loads, surpassing competitors several times. Obninsk Composite Materials Plant is the main consumer of Jushi fiberglass in Russia and we have an agreement for the supply of glass roving.

Epoxy resin is the main polymer used in the production of fiberglass reinforcement. For the production of fiberglass by pultrusion, including in the production of composite fiberglass reinforcement, supports - pegs for plants and other products, we use high-quality epoxy resins CYD 128, produced by Sinopec (China) and epoxy resins KER 828, produced by the South Korean brand Kumho. The Obninsk Composite Materials Plant also has long-term contracts with these companies for the supply of epoxy resins.

IMHPA (Isomethyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride) is the main hardener in the production of fiberglass reinforcement. IMTHF is ideal for high temperature curing of epoxy resins. The production of fiberglass reinforcement occurs at high temperatures in special furnaces, the temperature reaches 340C. Therefore, when using IMTHF, composite products acquire excellent physical and mechanical properties and high strength characteristics.

Catalyst is a special compound that combines the properties of Diethylene Glycol Diglycidyl Ether (DEG-1) and Alcofen (DMP). When using these components, the final product acquires high chemical resistance properties."

Reinforcement made of fiberglass or other composites successfully replaces steel analogues.

The demand for the material on the market is explained by the low cost of raw materials and ease of installation.

The products have a low cost due to production on automated lines from inexpensive raw materials, in particular recycled glass. This allows you to reduce the cost of the final product and save natural resources.

Demand for non-metallic fiberglass reinforcement for reinforced concrete structures, foundations are constantly growing. It is used in construction and for household needs. Read on to learn how it is made.

Non-metallic fittings have been produced since the mid-20th century.

It attracts builders because during installation it eliminates the welding operation - reinforcing elements connected to each other with clamps.

Often the material goes into production after processing, which reduces the cost of the product.

The basis for the manufacture of the product is glass roving. It is obtained from aluminoborsilicate glass by melting and drawing into threads.

Roving- this is a bundle of threads impregnated with lubricant.

As additional Supplies are used:

  • epoxy resin;
  • special braided thread for winding reinforcement;
  • ethyl alcohol, acetone;
  • Dicyandiamide.

In Russia there is normative base for the production of such fittings.

The document sets out the requirements for the material, and the appendices contain test rules; all standards for the manufacture of composite polymer reinforcement regulated by GOST 31938-2012.

Regulatory acts contain test methods to determine operational properties:

  • 32486-2013 – durability;
  • 32487-2013 – resistance to aggressive environments;
  • 32492-2013 – mechanical characteristics (ultimate loads on compression-tension, bending), adhesion strength to concrete.

Comparison of metal and composite

The table shows Comparative characteristics fiberglass and steel reinforcement:

Polymer products cheaper steel. Unlike the latter, she:

  • does not corrode in sea water;
  • not afraid of acids;
  • does not conduct electric current and heat.

Equipment

Many reinforcement factories have mastered the production of products from composite materials.

They produce rods in accordance with GOST and their own specifications.

The products differ in the thickness of the trunks.

Serious enterprises warn buyers about this and provide reliable information about the product.

At the request of the customer, the company produces non-standard diameter rod.

Fiberglass production lines

The technological production cycle is carried out on specialized lines.

Standard set of equipment for release composite reinforcement:

  • a creel on which bobbins with glass roving are installed;
  • The tension device includes a raw material heating unit and an impregnation bath;
  • The wrapper is designed for forming and winding (winding) the rod;
  • machine for distributing sand dressing;
  • a tunnel oven is used to heat a bundle of threads after impregnation with epoxy resin;
  • bath for water cooling of the harness after the furnace;
  • driven clamping device, automatic cutter.

The length of the room for installation of the line must be at least 22 meters. Each of the machines is about a meter wide. Average starting power is 12 kW, operating power is 4 kW.

Technology makes two demands to equip the workshop:

  1. Forced exhaust is supplied to the furnace.
  2. Supply (forced or natural) ventilation must be installed in the workshop.

There is equipment on the market from different companies, designed for different productivity and volumes of fiberglass products, and therefore different in price.

Several examples of inexpensive low-power lines for small workshops

Approximate price

A set of units will cost a small enterprise 1.5-1.8 million rubles, line average productivity– over 3 million

Thus, Mashspetsstroy sells lines and machines for the production of composite fiberglass reinforcement, designed to produce 8 m/min of rods with a diameter of 12 mm, at a price of $43 thousand.

"Ivanovsky mechanical plant» offers two line modifications:

  • single-strand at 10 m/min at a price of $29 thousand;
  • two-strand 20 m/min at a price of $35 thousand.

The units can produce two types of reinforcement: ribbed and wound. The dimensions, cost and energy consumption of the production line for the first type are smaller.

Unit characteristics

Here are two examples of inexpensive lines.

  1. "TLKA-2" Armatura-Sila company. The length of the technological chain is up to 18 m, the length of the rod is up to 12 m, the width is 2 m. The line with a productivity of 5-10 km/shift is serviced by 2-3 people. Cost 1.2 million rubles. (with an automatic two-strand twister - 1.75 million). Produces fittings with a diameter of 4-20 mm. The total power of the machines is 12-14 kW.
  2. PLPSA-20 PlastOsnova LLC. The two-strand line, 16 m long, is designed for the production of reinforcement with a diameter of 4-16 mm. The manufacturer recommends installation in a room 22 m long, 2.5 m high and with an air temperature of at least 16⁰C. The cost is 1 million rubles.

Manufacturing technology

Brief technical process for preparing glass roving:

  • preparation of raw materials - to give the material ductility, it is melted;
  • drawing threads up to 20 microns thick;
  • applying oil to the threads;
  • formation of bundles of multiple threads, i.e. actually, glass roving.

Roving is the basis of future reinforcement.

Its strength and other technical characteristics depend on it.

Therefore, it is very important to use high-quality raw materials for the manufacture of composite reinforcement.

To reduce the cost of products, it is permissible to add glass, obtained as a result of recycling.

The process of heating and separating the threads is carried out on line units.

The equipment is configured for products of a certain length and diameter.

  1. The threads tucked into the creel are fed to a tension device that performs several functions. The machine evenly distributes the internal stresses generated in the threads and arranges them in the form of a bundle.
  2. The bundles with the applied oil composition are dried and heated with heated air.
  3. The prepared bundles of threads are lowered into baths filled with a heated binder.
  4. The calibration mechanism forms a rod of a given diameter. In the case of manufacturing reinforcing bars with ribs, braided threads are wound onto the base.
  5. The billets enter the tunnel kiln. Fine sand is first distributed over the surface of the products without winding.

To produce the finished product, all that remains is to cool the rods with running water, cut them or wind them into coils.

Useful video

This video clearly shows the technology for the production of fiberglass composite reinforcement from fiberglass on the TLKA-2 line:

Conclusion

Manufacturing a technological product with high demand is an attractive idea for organizing an enterprise.

There are all the prerequisites for reinforcement made from it:

  1. Available raw materials and equipment.
  2. 2-3 people are enough to operate the line.
  3. With the same characteristics, the cost of fiberglass reinforcement is approximately 30% lower than steel reinforcement.
  4. The material is much lighter than its metal counterpart, which reduces transportation costs. So, 2 tons of rolled steel cost the same as 160 kg of composite.

The company has good development prospects, since fiberglass reinforcement is increasingly used by small construction companies.

  • Production technology

Fiberglass reinforcement, otherwise known as “composite”, are hardened rods made of glass fibers and impregnated with a special polymer binder. In construction, such rods replace previously used metal structures and are used in the installation of concrete structures and building foundations. Their main differences are:

  • lightness (weight is 5 times less than that of metal rods of the corresponding size and quantity);
  • installation features - fastening with ties instead of standard welding;
  • dielectric properties and lack of shielding specificity;
  • high level stretchability and increased strength of the material;
  • 100-year guaranteed service life of the structure;
  • resistance to corrosion, environmental influences and atmospheric phenomena;
  • low cost of production.

Ease of use causes demand for fiberglass reinforcement not only for construction in industrial scale, and for wide application in domestic conditions, for the installation of home greenhouses or small buildings.

Advantages of business producing fiberglass reinforcement

For entrepreneurs who want to carve out their niche in construction business, the production of fiberglass reinforcement is a good option for rapid development and income generation. Outdated metal structures are being replaced by composite reinforcement that is more profitable to operate, and the increasing needs of the repair and construction industry guarantee the high purchasing power of this product. The production of fiberglass reinforcement does not require the involvement of large quantity employees to perform work. The approximate period of self-sufficiency of production and achievement of profitable indicators is about six months, which allows us to talk about the profitability of production and the prospects of investing in business. On the positive side There are also benefits from the production of fiberglass rods, due to the low cost of initial raw materials and relative cheapness necessary equipment. The units that make up the production line are relatively compact and are serviced by only 2-3 workers involved in the process of producing composite rods. The price of fiberglass rods is one third lower than that of their metal counterparts, so consumer demand for products with high quality indicators, while allowing savings on estimated costs, is steadily increasing. Taking into account the rapid creation and development of various firms and companies striving to enter commerce in a timely manner and have time to conclude long-term contracts for the supply of materials to developers and contractors, the competitiveness of the enterprise and, accordingly, the successful implementation of composite reinforcement will be higher production organizations who have managed to earn the trust of consumers.

Step-by-step plan for opening the production of fiberglass reinforcement - Requirements for the premises, GOSTs

The first step in preparing for the start of production is the selection of premises that meet the requirements for workshops that house complex equipment. For the accuracy and success of high-tech manufacturing of fiberglass rods, the following conditions must be met:

  • the minimum length of the workshop is from 25 meters;
  • flat floor in the room, maximum level difference - up to 4-5 cm;
  • constantly supported optimal temperature air (about 16 degrees);
  • the presence of high-quality, uninterrupted ventilation with established outflow parameters of 0.25 cubic meters. m per minute;
  • ceiling height - from 3 meters (permissible limit - from 2.5 meters);
  • Possibility of a passage width of 1.5 meters between production lines.

It is necessary to have convenient access roads and a warehouse for storing products to avoid clutter production premises finished products. It is worth carrying out logistics calculations in advance, allowing you to develop a clear schedule for the supply of raw materials and create a scheme for sending products for sale. This will avoid delays in the production of fiberglass reinforcement and prevent the formation of surplus goods.

Technology for the production of fiberglass reinforcement

The technology for producing composite rods is quite simple in its essence, but it requires strict implementation and adherence to the procedure for manufacturing the product. The process consists of the initial impregnation of glass fibers with a special resin and the subsequent formation of rods of the required diameter in units designed for this purpose, polymerization and application of a fixing layer. The quality of manufactured fiberglass reinforcement depends on the selection of raw materials and the production process. The raw materials are the following ingredients:

  • fiberglass;
  • synthetic resins (phenol-aldehyde - hardening during polymerization and polycondensation, epoxy - not polluting the environment with side emissions during production process);
  • polymers - a type of resins, polybenzothiosol, polybenzimidazole and polyamide (during production they require the addition of other resins);
  • ethanol (ethyl alcohol), dimethyl ketone (acetone), hardener - dicyandiamide.

Mandatory components for fiberglass rods are rovings (wire threads), used for winding rods and reinforcing the product. The production stages are automated, the business requires minimal human effort in the process of manufacturing composite reinforcement, but constant monitoring and maintenance is required production line professionals. Production stages:

  • Immersion of the starting material (continuous strands of fiberglass) into a container for impregnation with resin containing hardening components.
  • Removing wire from parts that was used to give relief.
  • Pulling the resulting rods through a high-temperature polymerization chamber.
  • Creating a reinforcement surface relief by winding and securing a profile.
  • Cooling and drying of workpieces.
  • Feeding the roving to the die, forming a rod of the required diameter and configuration.
  • Drawing of finished rods, final dewatering and, if necessary, winding into coils or stacking of parts cut to the required length.

Until 2014, clear standards for the standardization of fiberglass rods were not defined in the post-Soviet space. Manufacturers either used parameters adopted in America and Europe, or did not certify their products. GOST 31938-2012, which came into force in January 2014 and adopted by 8 countries (Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), regulates the indicators and requirements for the production of fiberglass reinforcement. The rules describe methods and methods for product quality control and define precise limits for the content of substances to minimize harm to environment. The text of the document contains Normative references, classification and technical requirements, mandatory for the production of products.

How to choose equipment for the production of fiberglass reinforcement

When opening an enterprise for the production of reinforcement from fiberglass fibers, it is necessary to equip the workshop with specialized equipment. You can either purchase and install a fiberglass processing line in parts, selecting individual units, or purchase a ready-made set of special equipment that provides the entire work process. For the most part, the machines are universal and are suitable for producing composite rods of various diameters (from 4 to 24 mm), which allows you to expand the range of products depending on the level of demand for a particular type of rod. For the uninterrupted operation of production lines, it is necessary to ensure a sufficient level of electrical voltage in the network (380 V, 50 Hz is required for the operation of the equipment), take fire safety measures and conduct thorough training of persons with access to the machines. The complex line consists of the following parts:

  • bath for impregnation of threads, equipped with spin functions and a set of dies;
  • guillotine-type mechanism for cutting rods;
  • polymerization oven with adjustable temperature levels;
  • cooling unit;
  • device for pulling reinforcement;
  • apparatus for twisting threads and winding rod ribs;
  • a machine that twists finished products into coils.

In total, the length of the entire structure reaches from 15 to 20 meters, and its width ranges from 0.5 to 1 meter. The workshop arrangement should be designed in such a way as to leave the space required by technological standards around the machines and ensure unhindered movement of operating personnel. The list of the company’s equipment also includes forklifts, which will be used to transport finished products to warehouses, equipment for weighing and measuring products, devices responsible for the workshop ventilation system, supporting the required temperature regime indoors and built-in fire protection of the building.

What documents are needed to open

Registration of a business for the production of fiberglass equipment is carried out according to the standard scheme adopted in the Russian Federation for opening small and medium-sized enterprises. The procedure established by law regulates actions for official registration private company. The first step for a beginning entrepreneur is usually to contact the state registrar, who clarifies the composition of the initial package of documents prepared for submission to the state registration authorities. In accordance with the law of the Russian Federation “On state registration legal entities and individual entrepreneurs,” issuing a business registration certificate takes about a week. The package of documentation submitted to the registration authority includes:

  • application in the appropriate form;
  • copies of identity documents (for individuals) and a selection of documentation about the creation legal entity, including statutory papers;
  • receipts confirming payment of state duty.

Contacting the registration authorities takes place at the place of residence individual entrepreneur or in accordance with the location of the legal entity. Submission of documentation is carried out directly by the owner or manager of the business or representatives acting on the basis of a notarized power of attorney. All documentation must be drawn up in accordance with established by law forms and filled out properly, otherwise the package of papers is returned to the submitter for revision.

Which OKVED code should I indicate for a business producing fiberglass reinforcement?

The application for opening a business indicates the direction of activity that complies with OKVED ( All-Russian classifier species economic activity). The production of fiberglass reinforcement as a separate field of activity is not included in the classifier, therefore it is intended to select the most appropriate direction from the list available on the list. The following codes may be suitable:

  • 23.19 - Production and processing of other glass products, including technical products from glass;
  • 23.91 - Production of abrasive products;
  • 23.99 - Production of other non-metallic mineral products not included in other groups;
  • 23.14 - Production of fiberglass;
  • 25.24.9 - Providing services in the field of production of plastic parts;
  • 36.63.7 - Production of other products not included in other groups.

Which tax system to choose for the production of fiberglass reinforcement

An important issue for those wishing to open and develop an enterprise for the production of fiberglass rods is the planning of tax expenses. It is possible to clarify the taxation scheme and determine the approximate amount of deductions when submitting documents and registering the company with the tax authorities at the place of registration entrepreneurial activity. Based on the standard calculations carried out when drawing up a business plan for opening manufacturing company, then the approximate list of tax items will look like this:

  • VAT;
  • income tax;
  • taxes from wages;
  • land tax, transport fees, etc.

Depending on the form of ownership, types of specified activities and even the geographical location of the workshop in Russia, the list of mandatory taxes may change, or the possibility of reducing the amount of government fees by taking measures to minimize costs will arise.

Do I need permission to open?

To release products, you need to have test reports according to GOST 31938-2012 methods. Where the geometric formats, the results of tensile and compression tests, strength and elasticity in cross-section and determination of the maximum operating temperature will be determined. Based on this, a conclusion is made about the compliance of the fittings with the GOST parameters, a report on the stability and quality of production. A certificate of product compliance with the requirements of regulatory documentation is also issued.

Production technology

For the production of fiberglass reinforcement you will need the following materials:

  • glass roving - a bundle of glass fibers;
  • resins, acetone, dicyandiamide and ethyl alcohol,
  • woven thread - roving for reinforcement winding.

The process looks like this. The roving is supplied from a special mechanism to a tensioning device, where it is assembled in the required order. This completed bundle is then dried and heated, then impregnated and pulled through dies that set the required geometric parameters. After this, the threads go to the wrapper, where a reinforcement rod is formed and a winding of a given thickness is wound onto it. The reinforcement then goes into a tunnel oven to polymerize the resin into the impregnation. If sprinkling of products is required, a device for this is provided at the entrance to the oven. After the furnace, the hot tow is sent to a special bath for cooling. At the end of the process, the cooled reinforcement is cut in accordance with the specified dimensions.

How much money do you need to start this business?

When planning to open a workshop or mini-factory for the production of fiberglass reinforcing bars, it should be taken into account that this business requires initial material costs, and entrepreneurs who do not have sufficient amounts of money to invest in a timely manner to start production should better find a more budget-friendly option production activities. You can calculate preliminary capital investments based on the specific conditions and existing property and equipment of an individual business entity. Estimated costs will consist of the following expense items:

  1. Purchase or lease of land on which production is expected to be located (the cost depends on the location and size of the territory).
  2. Costs for procurement of raw materials (from 300 thousand rubles based on minimum production output).
  3. Costs for registering a business and organizational activities- 20-50 thousand rubles.
  4. Transport and utility costs (from 100 thousand rubles).
  5. Purchase and installation of a comprehensive line for the production of fiberglass equipment (the price fluctuates depending on changes in the exchange rate, the brand of manufacturers of units and machines and the condition of the equipment. According to a rough estimate, the cost of one line ranges from 800 thousand to 1.5 million rubles).
  6. Costs for construction or rental of production premises (from 50 thousand rubles).
  7. Repair or re-equipment of the workshop in accordance with requirements and safety standards (depending on the condition of the existing premises, on average costs 200-300 thousand rubles).
  8. The wage fund for employees (the mandatory amount of remuneration is calculated, regardless of the start of profit at the first stage of activity - 200-300 thousand rubles).
  9. Reserve stock of material resources for unforeseen expenses - from 50 thousand rubles.

The list of expected costs can be quite long. And the task of any businessman is the need to independently or with the involvement of third-party specialists calculate all possible expense flows - both before starting to make a profit from the manufacture of products, and in the process of increasing the turnover of his own business. It is advisable to start production with an initial capital of 1.5-2 million rubles; this amount is minimal for investing in a business.

How much can you earn in the production of fiberglass reinforcement?

With proper management of the business, investments will begin to pay off within a period of 6 months, but a full return of funds and achievement of positive financial balance indicators in such areas of production is predicted within a 2-year period.

Vyacheslav Vyacheslavovich, Irkutsk, self employed

I have been working with Armplast since 2014. We ordered 2 lines of reinforcing equipment and 1 line for the production of ASP fiberglass mesh, they delivered it on time, installed and configured the equipment, trained staff to work on the lines and shared the technology. They told us all the intricacies and secrets of the production of fiberglass composites, thanks to which the products are of a level higher in quality than those of competitors. We easily entered the market and paid for ourselves very quickly. We also purchase raw materials from Armplast, so we don’t experience problems with raw materials and we always have something to make fiberglass reinforcement or mesh from. The Russian market for composite materials is practically unlimited and builders are so conservative that they don’t even know about such a magnificent invention as fiberglass reinforcement and mesh, but everyone is happy and as a result, they almost completely abandon metal in low-rise construction. There have never been any complaints regarding the operation of the lines. Thanks to Armplast specialists for the quality work done.

Nikolay, Moscow, construction company

We purchased the line from equipment manufacturers Armplast in 2015. We spent a long time choosing a supplier, comparing different companies, visiting their own production shops, comparing their products, namely the quality of the composite materials produced, and in the end the choice fell on the Armplast company. We were able to install the fittings quickly enough, within 2 weeks, which is 2 times faster than the stated delivery time. All prices were quoted “honestly,” which I can’t say about other manufacturers, where various additional markups appeared in order for the line to eventually work. We launched and produced a trial batch of products, the quality was excellent. Provide timely supplies of raw materials. I’m happy with everything, I hope we will continue to work in the same rhythm.

Mikhail Alexandrovich, Moscow, director construction company

I would like to express my gratitude to the Armplast team for quality equipment, which they supplied to us. We bought 3 lines at once and didn’t even expect such a short payback period, but it’s really possible. I can add that the lines are indeed very economical in terms of consumption of electricity and raw materials and labor force. The line can be operated by only 1 person. Indeed a very highly profitable business and a very good supplier of equipment. The manufactured fittings are very good quality, which allowed us to quickly “push” competitors in our region. We are now planning to develop production in neighboring regions and are again planning to turn to the Armplast plant, because there are no complaints about the work of this team, the guys are truly professionals in their field and have trained our employees, who are now also top-class professionals. Thanks for a job well done.
