Nikon D5500 camera review. Nikon D5500 - another successful model or a marketing ploy? Built-in Wi-Fi module

We continue our reviews of SLR cameras with a story about a solid middle peasant model range Nikon, the amateur camera D5500, which in many of its characteristics is in no way inferior, and in some ways even comes close to the older model of the seven thousandth series D7200. This includes a 24.2 megapixel matrix resolution, the absence of an anti-aliasing filter, a fast EXPEED 4 processor, ISO sensitivity up to 25600, a built-in Wi-Fi module, and also a new feature - for the first time for Nikon DSLRs, the D5500 has a rotating touch screen. And all this in a compact, lightweight, convenient case at a fairly competitive price for its class. During testing, I will try to test the camera in various shooting situations and help a beginner choose a DSLR, because this camera is designed specifically for beginners, but nevertheless demanding in terms of picture quality and control ergonomics.

The appendix at the end of the review compares the technical characteristics of the D5500 with older and younger modern models of Nikon DSLRs, as well as with a camera from one of its competitors; An interesting comparative table is presented, illustrating the evolution of cameras in the 5,000th series, starting with the D5000 model.

The video briefly examines the ergonomics of the Nikon D5500 camera, the principles of setting the main modes, provides examples of shooting photos and videos, as well as an example of Time Lapse interval shooting. The film was shot by the author and is an appendix to this article.

Testing methodology

All test frames in this review were shot on a Nikon D5500 camera, firmware 1.00, RAW (NEF) format 14-bit, AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens, SDHC UHS-I Transcend SDHC memory card 32GB 300x Class 10, developed in the program Adobe Lightroom 6.1, all photos are shown without artistic treatment, as they were filmed, the necessary retouching was carried out for the portraits. Photos with the device itself in the frame were taken with a Canon 5D Mark II.

Ergonomics Nikon D5500

Frame. Taking the camera in my hands, I want to say Wow! This is a real DSLR, but it feels in your hand like a mirrorless one, or as they are sometimes called, system camera. Only the Nikon D5500 has a real “mirror” grip - comfortable and extremely grippy, it fits in the hand like a glove, both in men’s and women’s hands.

The thumb rests comfortably on a special pad, the index finger fits precisely on the shutter button, and the other three hold the grip. Beauty! The 18-140 lens is a bit heavy for it; with a more compact lens, the camera is really small.

Screen. The most important new product is the D5500, and it is also the most controversial. The screen in the D5500 camera is rotating and touch-sensitive.

  • Touchscreen. In practice, during the 3 weeks of filming, I never used the touchscreen. This is probably a matter of habit, since I have been shooting with cameras without a touchscreen for many years and have not experienced any inconvenience. You need a touchskin to type letters on the on-screen keyboard - using buttons and wheels is a complete pain. The second convenient feature is selecting the focus point by touching your finger; smartphone lovers will appreciate it. If you move the focus frame with the joystick, it moves too slowly, and it’s true that pointing your finger at the right place is easier and faster. But shooting a frame by touch... it bothered me, I turned it off. If you choose the focus point by touching your finger, then it’s still more common to take a picture by pressing the shutter button, thus working with both hands.
  • Swivel design. I would be more comfortable with a 90-degree folding screen rather than a rotating one; in practice, in most cases, its rotating nature only gets in the way. Yes, there is an advantage - you can turn the screen over and snap it into the case, this way the surface of the screen will be inside and will not be damaged during transportation. You can start shooting with the screen closed, but you won’t be able to immediately evaluate the result of the shooting, the screen is closed, you need to pick it up with your left hand, flip it over and turn it over, which distracts attention and interferes with shooting.
  • Selfie. If Nikon has made it possible to turn the screen on your loved one for selfies, then make a full-fledged selfie mode, as in other cameras when there is a selfie button or a selfie self-timer. The Nikon D5500 has none of this; pressing the shutter button while holding the camera pointed at you is not convenient, however, you can take a picture by touching the screen, and if you use the timer, you need to turn it on again each time.

Screen brightness is excellent, does not go blind in the sun, the resolution is crazy, it is very convenient to use. In addition, the screen brightness can be adjusted if desired in the menu.

It is standard for amateur Nikon DSLRs, with a pentamirror; service information is displayed at the bottom of it, which traditionally displays the number 1000 How 1oooo, this has already become a signature feature of the company. Frame coverage approximately 95% horizontally and vertically, magnification 0.82x. There is a conveniently adjustable diopter and a rubber eyecup.

Control buttons. The reduction in the size of the body entailed a reduction in the size of the camera control buttons, and setting up the camera became less convenient.

  • The drive change button is one of the most popular in practice, but it is also one of the most problematic, as it is located on the front of the camera near the lens at the bottom, where older Nikon DSLRs have an autofocus mode button. The drive change button is inconvenient to press; you have to look for it blindly, but it is located flush with the body and has almost no tactile feel.
  • The buttons for zooming in and out of photos when viewing are very inconvenient, they are small and irregular in shape, and have a poor tactile feel. When you click, sometimes the trash can button is pressed at the same time, and thus you can accidentally delete the desired photo by accidentally clicking on the trash can again. Therefore, it is better to reduce or enlarge a photo on the screen using a touchscreen, in the same way as controlling a smartphone.
  • The Fn button, on the contrary, protrudes slightly from the body and feels great tactilely, and it is also very useful - you can assign an action to it, for example changing ISO, and since there is no separate ISO button in the camera, this will be very convenient. I set it up this way on the first day and got used to it instantly.
  • The video recording button is the most tactile button and it is located in the right place - it is not pressed accidentally, and it is difficult to confuse it with something else.
  • The settings wheel is conveniently located under the right thumb, and many photographers complain that it turns accidentally when shooting. This wheel never turned accidentally for me until I began to intentionally focus my attention on it. Everything is fine with it, the wheel is normal, comfortable. The second one under the index finger is missing, that's another matter.
  • The joystick works great, it is a little too small for my fingers, but for girls it will be just right.
  • It would be more convenient to have the i button a little higher so that you can press it with your thumb.
  • All other buttons are in their places and do not cause any complaints.

The compartment lids open and close easily and securely. The rubber feels like it fits very precisely to the body, no backlash or gaps. The coating of the body feels very pleasant, even under the left hand there are rubberized inserts, you don’t want to let go of the camera.

Sounds. The camera can help the photographer with sound signals, the most useful of which are confirmation of autofocus and countdown of the timer. In the menu you can adjust the sound tone - low or high, sounds can be turned off altogether. However, the sound level cannot be adjusted in any way. The sound is too loud; a quiet signal would be enough, since we most often hold the camera very close to us, especially when viewing through the viewfinder. A loud signal will be disruptive in public places, at conferences during speakers' speeches, and in other cases where you need to film without drawing attention to yourself. And at these same moments it is extremely important to hear the autofocus beep. Loud sound is good for taking group portraits so that everyone can hear the self-timer and not blink at the right moment, while smiling widely. This once again confirms the amateur orientation of the camera.

Shutter sound The camera has a clear one, it won’t be possible to take pictures on the sly. Eat quiet mode filming, which in fact turned out to be exactly the same as not quiet, there is little point in it.

Menu. The menu is standard Nikon, which, taking into account the features of various models, today works in all DSLRs of the company. Those who are familiar with it will easily find the desired setting; for beginners, one shooting day or a couple of hours for the “scientific poking” method will be enough.

User interfaces can be selected in the menu, this is called “Information Screen Format”, - two types are available (graphic and normal) with 3 color schemes for each, and screens for PSAM, separately for AUTO, SCENE and EFFECTS are configured separately. All of them are actually very beautiful and thought out to the smallest detail, I liked the graphic mode in the gray design, which is installed by default. There are on-screen hints, by the way, to get a hint you need to point your finger at the question mark, there’s no way to do this without a touchskin. Not only that, this question is also interactive and can blink if the camera doesn’t like something, for example when there is not enough light.

Camera-to-eye sensor - is there any shorter name for it in Russian? An eye sensor, like Eye Sensor, what is it called in the original? It’s a convenient thing, but it’s one of those things that you don’t notice when it’s there - it seems, how can there not be such a function at all? In the menu, this feature is called even cooler - “Auto-off information screen”, and in theory you can turn it off and try looking into the viewfinder and at the same time change the settings with your finger by poking at the screen. It’s terribly inconvenient, just terribly inconvenient, and the screen is blinding to your eyes!

There is simply no place for the second control wheel on the left on the top edge, just as there is nowhere to place a duplicate screen - the body is so compact, and so logically filled with buttons and wheels, that there is only free space for the second control dial, just below the shutter button, but there is a Nikon signature red stripe. The main mode change wheel does not have a locking button, but it turns with such a comfortable effort with a characteristic click that it cannot be turned accidentally.

Regarding ergonomics in general, we can say that the D5500 camera is comfortable, but in some ways it is still crude, there is something to work on. I would like to wish Nikon engineers to stop making lower-end models cheaper by deteriorating convenience; Even if they don’t have any function at all, you can survive this, but in fact, DSLRs of older series are more convenient and ergonomic to control.

Taking a portrait

It’s not possible to beautifully blur the background like a fifty-kopeck lens with an aperture of 1.4 with our lens - for portrait 70 mm there is an aperture of 5, and if you further increase the focal length, it will gradually turn into 5.6 at the long end of 140 mm. However, if background objects are far away, they are perfectly blurred, allowing you to create excellent photographs, and you want to finally stop thinking about aperture, apertures, primes and other nonsense. Let's take better portraits, because it's such a bright summer!

Portrait in the evening

For evening portraits, the camera has a built-in flash; it’s time to consider its operating modes.

  • fill flash
  • red-eye reduction
  • slow sync (except S and M modes)
  • slow sync with red-eye reduction (except S and M modes)
  • Rear curtain sync with slow sync (except S and M modes)
  • rear curtain sync (except P and A modes)

In order to work well on both the backdrop of the evening city and the person’s face, while combating the red-eye effect, a “Slow” mode is provided. sync + red-eye effect”, it is intended only for shooting in aperture priority mode A (see three examples below). When shooting in this mode, the camera does not take the picture right away; first it fires several short flashes to reduce the red-eye effect, and in these two seconds the photographer intuitively presses the shutter button harder, deciding that it did not work. The button is strong and will withstand it, but it’s still better not to press on it with all your strength.

When shooting in creative modes, PSAM mode, and SCENE mode, you can adjust the flash output by -3-+1 EV in 1/3 or 1/2 EV increments. This can be useful to lighten the face just slightly by reducing the flash power.

Indoor portrait

When shooting indoors, we will be forced to raise the ISO value, since in most cases there is not enough light even for a sensitivity of ISO 800. The Auto ISO mode comes in handy here, but it is important to set the upper limit in the menu, otherwise the camera will happily set 25600 if it thinks that It's a bit dark around. Practice suggests that it is better to limit the machine’s appetite to 3200. It’s a shame that there is no button to turn on Auto ISO; it’s a long way to get to this parameter in the menu, and it’s also difficult to remember the path.

But what the camera is completely fine with is auto white balance. The pictures came out very similar to what actually happened. It is not possible to set the color temperature in Kelvin - the camera does not allow this. In the studio, we often know the temperature of the fixtures, especially when using professional continuous lighting, and could set this value for accurate color reproduction. Why the D5500 doesn't have such a simple function is unclear.

Landscape photography

Taking landscapes with any Nikon DSLR camera is a pleasure, especially in bright weather. Most of the landscapes in this review are shown below to talk about the capabilities of the lens.

Evening shooting

When shooting evening landscapes, we most often use a tripod and a self-timer so as not to move the camera by pressing the shutter button. I would like to say something additional about the self-timer. Namely, the self-timer must be turned on again every time before each new use.

The menu has a timer time setting - 2, 5, 10, and even 20 seconds, this is good, and there is also such a parameter as the number of frames. A strange parameter, it literally determines how many times the timer will work in a row, you can set it from 1 to 9. But it will work with one press of the shutter button, automatically shooting one frame after another, counting down 4 seconds each time. Apparently, this was done for taking group photos, so as not to run to the camera to press the shutter button for the next take.

Therefore, in the evening you will either have to use the remote control, which still needs to be purchased additionally, or turn on the timer again each time. I shot a lot with the D5500 with a timer, and I managed to bring it to automaticity, but you still need to constantly remember - turn on the timer, turn on the timer. As I already said, the drive change button is hidden flush into the body and is tactilely felt poorly, or rather, not felt at all. In a word, the timer in the Nikon D5500 camera is made inconveniently.

It’s better to forget about releasing the shutter from your smartphone - in field conditions this is terribly inconvenient, since when controlling from a smartphone, it is impossible to change the exposure parameters. I decided to change the aperture - I left the application, changed the value, turned on the application, took a photo, and so on in a circle. It’s easier then to turn on the timer every time before a new frame.

But what’s good about the camera with this lens is the aperture of 22 at the wide end and 38 at the long end; in the evening you can set ISO 100, close the aperture all the way and “freeze” the movement as you please. In the example above, the shutter speed was 15 seconds, aperture f/25, ISO 100. The longest pose in the camera is 30 seconds, but if this is not enough, there is a Bulb mode.

Shooting panoramas

Shooting a panorama is possible only manually; the camera does not have an automatic panorama stitching mode.

Speaking about shooting panoramas with the D5500 camera, it can be noted that here the camera fades into the background; to shoot a successful panorama you will need an interesting angle, experience and skill of the photographer, as well as good software for gluing, for example Lightroom 6.1.

Lens 18-140 mm

The camera came to us for testing complete with kit lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR. In fact, there are several options for whale optics, it could be, for example, 18-55 or 18-105, all of these lenses are equipped with a stabilizer, a quiet and fast focusing motor, coated glass and are suitable for most amateur photographers. Our kit lens is no exception; it also has all these technologies, as well as a large range of focal lengths for travel: wide angle 18 mm, portrait 70, telephoto 140, and stabilizer.

At a wide angle, the barrel effect is noticeable, and, what is pleasantly surprising, vignetting and chromatic aberration are weakly expressed. When shooting in RAW, this is corrected in Lightroom with one click; for JPEG, the camera will correct the distortion itself if a compatible lens is used and this function is enabled in the menu.

Perhaps one of the main disadvantages of our lens is its size and weight, especially when combined with such a small lens as the D5500. The lens is overweight, the camera with it becomes heavy and does not fit into a shirt or trouser pocket. The second disadvantage is the rather dull 5.6 at the long end, but if it were the same 3.5 as at the wide end, this lens would not be a kit lens - such aperture is worth a lot, in the literal sense.

To be honest, in practice I have never used 140 mm, it is too much for everyday shooting, 105 would be quite enough. If you shoot a portrait at 140 mm, you need to move far away from the model, since a comfortable distance of 2-3 meters is not enough, the person’s face turns out to be too large. It is generally convenient to shoot some city scenes or landscapes at a wide angle; for still lifes or objects, 50-70 mm is quite enough.

Therefore, when choosing a kit in a store, you should think carefully about whether such a large range of focal lengths is needed. Nikon recently released an excellent lens, and in my opinion, it will be just right for the D5500. It's faster, more compact, and the 16-80mm range is more than enough for everyday photography.

Autofocus

A small educational program. Many novice amateur photographers, especially those who pick up a DSLR for the first time, shoot as they are used to shooting on their phone or compact - in LiveView mode, building a frame based on the screen, and complain about the uncertain slow autofocus, they say, what about the 3D promised by the developers -tracking, where are 39 points?

It should be taken into account here that all the main autofocus parameters are indicated for shooting using the viewfinder, when the camera uses the full power of the phase sensors on the matrix. After all, we have a DSLR in our hands, and we should, in theory, frame the frame by looking at the subject through the lens, and use the screen only to view the captured frames and adjust the camera using the menu. However, one day manufacturers followed the lead of the newcomers, and today the Live View mode is available in all modern DSLRs, and besides, you can shoot video only this way, and no other way. In this case, contrast focusing is used; it is several times slower and much less accurate than phase focusing.

Professionals frame the frame by bringing the camera to their eyes, not because they are used to it or it is more convenient for them (although they are used to it and it is more convenient this way), but because they take full advantage of all the advantages of fast and accurate autofocus. Therefore, speaking about autofocus, we must consider the operation of the camera in two different modes, as if they were two different cameras altogether.

1. When shooting with the viewfinder

AF-A - automatic tracking autofocus. The most universal mode, it should be chosen by beginners, as well as if it is difficult to decide which mode to install. For stationary objects, the camera selects AF-S single-shot autofocus, and if the object starts to move, it switches to AF-C focus tracking mode. You need to remember that a frame can only be taken if the camera was able to focus, otherwise you can press the shutter button as hard as you can, all to no avail. The autofocus confirmation beep is very useful here - half-press, the camera emits a signal, and you can shoot.

AF-S - single-servo autofocus. For still subjects, focus is locked when you press the shutter button halfway, and you can reframe the photo. Only available in PSAM creative modes.

AF-C - continuous-servo autofocus. Used for shooting moving objects. When you press the shutter button halfway, the camera will try to keep the subject in focus. Interestingly, in menu (a1) you can allow the camera to take a picture even if autofocus does not work; by default, this function is turned off, that is, you can take a picture only if the camera has caught the focus. You can lock focus by pressing the AE-L/AF-L button. Only available in PSAM creative modes.

MF - manual focus. The camera has a so-called electronic rangefinder, this function can help when focusing manually: if you press the shutter button halfway and rotate the focus ring, the camera will make a beep if the subject falls into the focus area. In this case, you can select any of 39 points.

Selecting a Focus Point

  • One point. Convenient for shooting objects, flowers or landscapes, in a word, stationary objects, when the photographer knows exactly where in the frame he wants to get focus; for example, you can focus on the center of a flower, beautifully blurring the background around it. The autofocus point will be displayed as a frame in the viewfinder; it can be moved to the desired location using the joystick. Also, the location of this point is duplicated on the information screen; it is often useful to take a quick glance at the screen and clarify where the camera will focus.
  • Dynamic autofocus, you can select 9, 21 or 39 points. This method is suitable for shooting dynamic scenes.
  • 3D tracking. If the subject begins to move after the camera has focused, the camera will use 3D tracking to select a new focus point and maintain focus on the desired subject, all while half-pressing the shutter button, of course.
  • Automatic AF area selection. The camera itself will decide which object to focus on.

2. When shooting with Live View

  • AF-S- single-servo autofocus
  • AF-F- continuous tracking autofocus
  • M.F.- manual focusing

Autofocus area selection

  • Face priority autofocus. The name speaks for itself - for shooting portraits. If the camera detects a face in the frame, the frame will change its appearance, while it will follow the person's movement, trying to keep his face in focus.
  • Wide autofocus area. For landscape photography, it can be used as a universal setup for most situations.
  • Normal autofocus area. For focusing at a specific point in the frame, suitable for shooting flowers or other objects when you want to accurately point the camera to the object to adjust the focus.
  • Maintaining an object.

High speed shooting

Nikon D5500 is equipped with two high-speed shooting modes - continuous slow (L) - 3 frames per second and continuous fast (H) - 4 fps (14 bit RAW), and the camera will provide the advertised 5 fps if you select 12-bit RAW .

As already mentioned, we used a mid-price memory card, not the fastest, but not particularly slow either - SDHC UHS-I Transcend SDHC 32GB 300x Class 10, the manufacturer claims speeds of up to 45 MB/s, but judging by independent tests this speed After all, reading, the card writes data slower - about 25 MB/s.

The shooting was carried out in RAW 14-bit format, the size of each file is approximately 24 MB, so our memory card is theoretically capable of recording 1 frame per second. For the test, we set continuous fast shooting H.

The example above demonstrates high-speed shooting. The camera buffer is just enough for one such series of 7-8 frames, after which it becomes clogged, and the camera transfers the frames to the memory card for some time, while you can continue to shoot about 1 frame per second. While the data is being rewritten, the light on the body is on, and as soon as all the data has been rewritten, the light goes off and the camera is again ready for a new series. It’s quite possible to photograph some dynamic everyday scenes, children’s games, and pets. You can try to shoot sports, but this camera is still not designed for serious high-speed photography.

ISO sensitivity

The ISO sensitivity in the camera can be set from 100 to 25600 in steps of 1/3 EV. Available automatic control For some reason there is no ISO for photos, but for video. For this test, high ISO noise reduction and long exposure noise reduction were turned off.

A small lyrical digression. Many of our readers ask to indicate the “working ISO”, meaning by this the question to what value the sensitivity can be increased in order digital noise didn't spoil the picture too much. I would like to clarify that the concept of “spoils the picture” is very subjective and cannot be tested in any way.

According to my feelings, in the Nikon D5500 you can safely raise the ISO to 1600, with caution to 3200 and 6400, then each photographer decides for himself according to the situation.

Shooting with Exposure Bracketing

Most often, exposure bracketing is used to experiment with the HDR style - expanding the dynamic range of a photograph when you want to bring out details in both highlights and shadows, or to intentionally create an artistic, dramatic HDR effect. I recently wrote on this topic, I recommend that anyone interested read it; there is no point in repeating the theory.

The D5500 camera does not have a dedicated bracketing control button, as in older models; bracketing is included in the menu. The camera can automatically shoot only three frames in a series; this value cannot be changed in any way. You can shoot with exposure bracketing, white balance or Active D-Lighting, but we're primarily interested in exposure bracketing for HDR.

Setting up bracketed shooting

To set up exposure bracketing shooting, you need to:

  • In menu e2 select “AE Bracketing”
  • Press the i button and find the BKT item
  • Select plug: 0.3, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2.0 EV available. A small BKT text will appear in the viewfinder to the left of the ISO value.

To quickly shoot a series, you need:

  • Press the drive mode button, then turn on high-speed shooting, for example H
  • Press and hold the shutter button
  • The camera will take a series of three frames with the bracket in place, one frame after another, with no delay between exposures
Setting the shooting mode

To shoot a series with a timer, you need:

  • In menu c3, set the self-timer delay to 2 seconds
  • In the same menu item, just below, the number of shots needs to be set to 1 - the camera will take a series of three shots, this parameter does not affect bracketing
  • Press the drive mode button, there turn on the self-timer delay of 2 seconds
  • Press the shutter button. The camera will take a burst, counting 2 seconds between each exposure
Setting up shooting with a timer

In the first case, you can easily move the camera, even when mounted on a tripod, by pressing the shutter button, and the exposures will not be perfectly identical. In the second case, the time delta of 2 seconds is too large, and if there is any movement in the frame (passers-by, cars, wind swaying tree branches, etc.), then the exposures will also differ greatly from one another, which will inevitably lead to problems with HDR stitching. Thus, on the Nikon D5500 you will not be able to shoot with bracketing quickly and accurately. Don’t forget that before filming each new episode you need to restart the timer.

0EV -2EV +2EV

Nikon D5500 records exposures in a manner that is unusual for me: 0, minus, plus. I’m used to seeing first minus, then zero, then plus, it seems more logical to me - from minus to plus. Older Nikon models allow you to adjust the exposure order, but the D5500 does not.

Most recently, in my article “Shooting HDR,” I argued that cityscapes at night are not suitable for HDR techniques. However, I did not take into account the St. Petersburg White Nights :-) Here is an example of night HDR photography:

Active D-Lighting

This is a feature of all Nikon DSLRs; we test this mode every time we work on camera reviews, and every time the operation of this function is puzzling. You can’t see much of a difference in the photo, but when processing RAW in a graphics editor, you can easily achieve more interesting results. This function has no effect on the raw file, only on JPEG. Shooting video

It is inconvenient to shoot video clips with the Nikon D5500, despite the fact that its FullHD shooting characteristics are quite modern.

Of course, the video needs to be shot in LiveView mode, and here lies our old familiar bug, known from previous models of Nikon DSLRs, namely - changing the aperture is not displayed on the screen at all. Only the change in shutter speed in M ​​mode is displayed - the picture becomes darker or lighter. To change the aperture, you need to exit Live View mode, change the value, and then turn on Live View again.

Switching to LiveView will show the picture full screen with photographic proportions of 3:2, and we have FullHD video with proportions of 16:9, that is, the picture will be cropped at the top and bottom. To see the future video frame correctly, you need to press the info button and select the “Display video indicators” screen. Now, if you press the i button, you can change the video frame size/quality, microphone sensitivity, white balance, Picture Controls, focus mode and autofocus areas, wind noise reduction, and enter exposure compensation. In M mode, instead of adjusting exposure, you can adjust ISO sensitivity.

Setting video options

The camera also does not have Auto ISO for video, there is no zebra stripe and there is no headphone output, there is no white balance setting in Kelvin. Agree, you can live without a zebra crossing and headphones, you can do without Auto ISO, but without visual control It’s a bit difficult to live above the exposition. Apparently, these are the very limitations that make the choice of the older model, Nikon D7200, justified for shooting videos, be it a video for your blog or professional work.

When shooting video, autofocus works, it is very leisurely, and the “yaw” effect is clearly pronounced, in other words, autofocus constantly moves back and forth, trying to focus, the picture seems to be “breathing”. The sound of the focus motor is well recorded in the audio track.

On the plus side: there is a 50p mode, but the camera will only shoot for 10 minutes in it, there is a built-in stereo microphone, as well as an input for an external microphone. If you have a task to shoot longer videos, you need to set the frame rate to 30p, and you can shoot for 30 minutes. You can turn on wind noise reduction in the menu and adjust the sound level. In a word, the developers of the Nikon D5500 camera have brought the photo shooting functions close to the level of older models, but at the same time they have played out on video.

Using Picture Control

I would like to talk about using the Picture Control function in relation to video shooting. Surely many have heard about the new product - Flat Picture Control mode. These are camera settings that allow you to get a picture that is neutral in color, it will look dull and not bright, muted, not sharp and not blurry. Average. In theory, this is done for subsequent processing in a video editor.

Setting Picture Controls

In practice, this is actually not entirely true. Anyone who shot in RAW and JPEG knows within what limits you can edit a RAW file - tone, contrast, shadows, highlights, brightness, white balance, and so on - I don’t want to say it too much. And how difficult it is to do something like this with JPEG, and so difficult that after the first attempts you begin to respect and love RAW. So, uniform Picture Control is not an analogue of RAW, it is the same compressed JPEG, only in video, and with muted tones. Do you feel the difference?

From my modest experience in video shooting, I can say that in the editor during editing bad picture can't be made good. And, on the contrary, it is difficult to spoil a good picture, because if everything is shot competently and correctly, the video is interesting to watch without any processing - I put the necessary fragments one after another, and the film is ready. The summary is this - it’s better to immediately shoot a good, bright, sharp and clear, beautiful picture.

It is for this reason that many cameras have HDMI stream output to an external recorder. This is already the same RAW, but for video, it’s better not to look at the picture without processing, but processing is possible within the widest limits, this is done by professionals. By the way, many amateur cameras (including the D3300) easily “give” the raw signal via HDMI. For example, Atomos Ninja recorders are compatible with almost all Nikon DSLR models, but this is a completely different story and other tests.

Let's return to the Nikon D5500. When shooting a video, you can safely trust the screen - shoot a piece of video and watch it right there. Like? This is how it will be on the big screen. Dull and dull? Change whatever you want, but get a good picture. Bright and colorful? Hurry up and press REC and start creating!

There is an exposure leveling function, this is a very useful function when shooting in the evening, when the illumination changes quickly - the sun sets, the building lights turn on, because it is at this time that you want to shoot Time Lapse. When this function is enabled, the camera’s automation will try to equalize the exposure as the series is shot, avoiding darkening of the video. When using this function, you need to ensure that the interval between shots is longer than the long exposure, otherwise the camera simply will not have time to take pictures at the specified interval.

  1. Shoot in aperture priority mode A. No auto modes, you should not allow the aperture to change automatically while shooting a series, it will look like flickering.
  2. Disable autofocus. When shooting each next frame, the camera will refocus, so when shooting Time Lapse you need to first adjust the focus, and then be sure to turn off autofocus. and while filming the movement of clouds over Moscow City, we did not turn off autofocus, which is very clearly visible in the video, this effect is difficult to explain in words, you just need to see it (see the video about the D610 at 17:50). And this effect looks unpleasant.
  3. White balance. Even when shooting in RAW, it is better to disable auto white balance, setting it either manually or to sun or cloud. It is very disappointing that in the D5500 it is impossible to set the exact white balance in Kelvin; you have to use presets. Of course, when stitching together Time Lapse, it will be possible to set a single white balance for all frames, but it is more convenient to immediately have it the same. When shooting a series in JPEG, you need to monitor the white balance especially carefully.
  4. Series shooting parameters. You should calculate the number of frames in advance so that it is enough for the entire series, and think about the delta between frames. It is important to remember that an error in these calculations will result in the future video being damaged. Calculation example: we want to get a Full HD 1920×1080 video with a frame rate of 24 fps, in total we will shoot 700 frames with an interval of 5 seconds, thus:
  • finished video length: 700/24 ​​= 30 seconds
  • camera will shoot: 700 * 5 / 60 = 1 hour

Time-lapse photography

Unlike older models of Nikon DSLRs, the camera no time-lapse function. This mode works in much the same way as interval shooting, only at the output the camera glues the finished video clip in the specified format and there is no need to glue the Time Lapse film on the computer in a video editing program. It should be noted that time-lapse photography is a very convenient function that saves great amount time and effort, allowing you to get the same result. It's a pity that the Nikon D5500 doesn't have it.

Multiple exposure

Nikon D5500 doesn't allow shoot in the multiple exposure genre. In multiple exposure mode, exposures overlap each other, as if the photographer forgot to transfer the film and is taking pictures of the same area of ​​it. With skillful handling, you can get unique and inimitable photographs. Multiple exposure mode is available in older Nikon DSLR models.

The most inconvenient effect to use is Selective color. According to the engineers, we should get a black and white image in which some objects are highlighted in color. These could be, for example, red roses, a blue sky, a model's yellow dress, and so on, while everything around these objects is black and white. In practice, it is impossible to adjust the operation of this filter without half a liter of kefir, and kefir doesn’t really help. We have a touchskin! Who's stopping you from pointing at a rose or the sky and saying - let this object be colored?

No one is stopping you from poking, you just can poke until the morning - this special effect is configured differently. There is a small square in the center of the screen, this is the object selection frame; this frame cannot be moved from the center of the screen to another place. In other words, you won't be able to frame the frame first by mounting the camera on a tripod and then select the areas to paint. You need to hold the camera in your hands and “catch” the desired area with a white square, and then adjust the color intensity of this area using the joystick buttons. And so on up to 3 colors, at the end click OK. Then build a frame and take a photo.

Battery

The battery is called EN-EL14a, its capacity is 1230 mAh, you can take approximately 850 photos on one charge. The camera cannot be charged via USB; to charge it, you must turn off the camera and remove the battery from the case; it is charged in a special charger that comes with the camera, just like all other modern cameras are charged. Nikon DSLRs.

In the evening, when the setting sun comes out and nature is miraculously colored by its rays, our battery can treacherously discharge, blinking with an indicator on the screen. The camera will no longer allow you to turn on Live View, nor will you turn on the flash, but we still have a chance to capture a beautiful sunset! There is a separate item in the menu to configure energy saving parameters; there you can quite flexibly set the waiting time for entering sleep mode, turning off the information screen, turning off photo viewing and Live View. WiFi

Some novice users believe that using Wi-Fi they can connect the camera to a computer. This is not true, the wireless connection is used to connect the camera to a smartphone or tablet. Nikon's proprietary WMU (Wireless Mobile Utility) application is designed for this; the program is available for Android and iOS.

To connect two devices, the first thing you need to do is turn on Wi-Fi in the camera menu, the camera will create a network with a clever name like Nikon_WU2_090B5_204E40, the smartphone needs to be connected to this network, and then run the WMU application on it.

It is not possible to control the camera parameters; we only have access to LiveView images and selection of the focus point. The Android application shows the shutter speed and aperture and writes some other value in brackets, apparently the number of remaining frames. The iOS app doesn't show this either. Of course, ideally I would like to change the camera parameters... change the white balance... well, well, at least view the ISO value, what's so difficult about that?

Working with a smartphone, Android

However, in the case of mobile applications everything is not as bad as it would seem, namely, no one is stopping Nikon programmers from taking and rewriting the program, expanding its functionality. And if, reading these lines, your program works differently, then that’s how it was done.

Transfer the selected photo to your device

Another useful function is the transfer of the selected image to the device. This will be convenient if you have filmed a large photo shoot, for example 700 frames, and turning on viewing all the photos for the sake of transferring only a couple of frames is long and inconvenient, wasting battery power. At the same time, the images are not cached in any way, that is, if you exit the application and start viewing the photos again, you will again have to wait several minutes until all the thumbnails of all frames are downloaded to the smartphone.

It is much more convenient to find in the camera required photo(one or more) and transfer it to your smartphone. This function can come in handy when one of your friends wants to get their portrait urgently while out for a walk, because as a rule it takes so long to get their photos...

It's done like this. First, go to the menu and in the first tab, find the “Select” item at the very bottom. for front to a smart device." We scroll through, find the photos and mark them with the “minus” button, then click OK. Nothing is happening yet.

Turn on Wi-Fi in the camera, turn on Wi-Fi on the smartphone. Connect your smartphone to the camera network. Launch the WMU application and select viewing photos. This is where the application will tell us that the camera contains prepared photos for transfer. If it didn’t say, you need to restart it, now it definitely will. Click OK, the photos will be copied to the smartphone gallery.

GPS

In the D5500 camera, engineers removed the built-in GPS module that was in the D5300. For what reason this was done, the press releases do not say, but in our technological age we are accustomed to using electronic maps and navigators, and for us GPS coordinates in a particular image would not be superfluous, especially when traveling. Having taken more than 1000 photographs during the trip on different days in different places, it is sometimes difficult to remember exactly where this or that photo was taken, what kind of waterfall, what kind of monument, fortress, temple or church is depicted on it. Having the location coordinates in the file, this problem can be solved in a couple of mouse clicks.

Nikon engineers suggest using a smartphone connected to the camera via Wi-Fi to read GPS coordinates from it and write them to a file; this can be done with the WMU smartphone application discussed above. Quite a controversial decision, since on both devices Wi-Fi will greatly drain precious battery power, and in order to simply record GPS coordinates, you will have to press a lot of buttons and spend a lot of precious time. Most likely, few people will use this opportunity, and if the task is only to remember the coordinates of a place, it is much easier to make a duplicate frame on a smartphone, at least with a low resolution.

You can also use additional module GP-1/GP-1A, and which solution to use while traveling will have to be decided by the photographer.

  • Completely remain without GPS coordinates, relying on your memory, or write down the names of settlements in a notepad
  • Use a camera-smartphone connection via Wi-Fi, draining the batteries of both devices
  • Take control pictures on a smartphone, draining the battery only in the smartphone
  • Buy an additional module GP-1 (RUB 17,490) and carry it with you. According to user reviews, the external module works faster than the one built into the camera body (“cold start” for the GP-1 takes about 30 seconds, “hot start” about 5 seconds). True, for this price you can buy a box of batteries for a smartphone or a couple of spare smartphones :-)

The D5500 has better autofocus, 14-bit RAW, a rotating touch screen, and built-in Wi-Fi. Despite the difference in the cost of these cameras (about 20,000 rubles), technological features are useful when shooting, especially for beginners. So the D5500 camera will be more convenient.
