Basic problems with laser printers

Samsung ML-1250 laser printers have large number settings that control printing processes. Often they go astray and you just need to correct them for the printer to continue working as before. However, there are other failures that can generally be divided into two groups: cartridge failure (70%) and failure of the printer itself (30%).

The mining bunker is full

If large spots or streaks appear on the sheet from time to time, you can try cleaning the processing hopper, because... Due to its overflow, toner spills unevenly onto the paper.

Paper stops inside laser printer

Main reason– the paper output sensor is faulty, which is caused by its typical clogging or failure of the curtain. You need to clean the sensor and adjust the curtain.

Samsung ML-1250 printer jams paper

Usually caused by problems with the feed roller, due to its malfunction or excessive contamination, as well as damage to the bar that guides the sheets or the entire roller unit. When sheets jam as they exit the device, we can talk about broken or skewed rollers located in the paper output unit, as well as the bar that guides the sheets as they are ejected by the printer.

Samsung ML-1250 printer does not pick up paper

The main reason is that the paper tray has some damage. A crack that appears on the reversing gear housing disrupts the contact between the paper feed mechanism and the spring. An option to remove the damage may be complete replacement tray or crack elimination. The paper feed rollers may also be worn out. Cleaning them with a special restoring liquid will help.

The photoconductor is damaged

You can talk about this malfunction if thin lines or large spots are visible on the printed sheet gray at regular intervals. Repair will not help in this case. You will have to replace the photodrum (or the entire cartridge).

Some of the toner (paint) remains on the fingers

The image does not stick well to paper. The provoking factor for the malfunction is malfunction of the thermoelement. The cause may also be an incorrectly selected thermal film for the device (inappropriate thickness).

Samsung ML-1250 printer does not turn on

The main reasons are that the printer’s input circuits are damaged or there is no voltage in the network. Sometimes a zero reaction is caused by a faulty board, which is responsible for the formation of pulse currents inside the device and their subsequent distribution among the driving mechanisms. Then the solution will be to replace the board.

Samsung ML-1250 printer does not print

This may be due to breakdowns of internal mechanisms, as well as possible errors in the laser software Samsung printer ML-1250. If the indicator reporting internal problems does not indicate a possible problem, then most likely there is a failure in the driver system or board responsible for generating good image.

The pre-charge shaft has failed

There are two possible reasons:
  1. Charge wear if, when printing, a gray background with large gray spots randomly located on it is visible on the sheet. Only replacing the shaft will help.
  2. Contamination of the shaft if information is duplicated on the sheet or not all of it is printed. In this case, the shaft coating can be cleaned. If this does not help, you will have to replace the part.

Magnetic shaft is very worn

As a result, spots of white or dark shades appear on the sheets and printing failures (pronounced heterogeneity of the text). This malfunction can only be eliminated by replacing the shaft.

The squeegee (cleaning blade) is clogged

The result is a gray line appears along the printed sheet. To eliminate the breakdown, the squeegee must be cleaned or replaced if there is no positive result.

For more than 10 years of use, the flight is normal. The only problem is the rubber roller that swallows paper from the tray; you have to help it with your handles. Maybe this is a fee for using a printer at one time to print tracks on exchanged getinaks (printed circuit board manufacturing) using the thermal paper method from a fax machine and an iron.
The problem with paper gripping was solved; I bought a new rubber roller in an online store for 400 rubles, the roller itself cost 100 rubles and postage costs 300 rubles.
Cons: slow printing of JPG pictures and drawings and PDF documents. From the time it is sent for printing until the PDF document (one page) of 1-5 MB in size is printed, it takes from 1 to several minutes, depending on the file size.

Feedback: when connecting the printer via USB or RS-232 port, there will be no difference in printing speed.

Pros: Very low cost of printing thanks to the non-chip cartridge, and in general, as I understand it, refilling this printer is the most inexpensive of all for laser ones (in Tolyatti it’s only 140 rubles!!!)
Easy to use.
Very reliable, in 5 years of using it at home I only had to push the paper a couple of times for it to swallow it.
Cons: Not fast by modern standards, only 12 pages per minute versus usually 20 for later models. However, as the wise Russian proverb says: if you drive more quietly, you will keep going!
Prints a 100-page document in 8 and a half minutes.
Review: Excellent model, it’s a pity that it’s already out of production. If you come across a used one in good condition - take it for any money, it will pay for itself!

Pros: suitable for home use. In fact, this model was produced for SONO use.

There are no memory modules for expansion in the printer, even in service centers Samsung.

So only those who have a motherboard without an RS-232 port will need USB.

Absolute compatibility
Maintainability

Review: I received the printer as a write-off with paper feeding problems, after disassembling, cleaning and reassembling it works great :), the mileage turned out to be nothing, a little more than 10,000 prints.
An absolutely hassle-free machine: it works with any OS - it even prints using Print Screen from the setup of a simple UNCHIPped USB and Centronics cartridge - we connect it to anything that prints, be it a PC or some kind of measuring device :) the ability to expand memory up to 68 MB . In general, the ideal of a compact monochrome laser camera.
It's a shame they haven't made these for a long time.
If you come across a used one, take it.

It would seem that the Samsung ML-1210 personal laser printer recently appeared on store shelves. And now, Samsung has already found a replacement for it in the new model Samsung ML-1250.

What changed after changing one digit in the printer name? I will say right away that there is enough to write a separate article about this and conduct new tests of performance and print quality.

First of all, it should immediately be noted that there is a radical difference between the ML-1210 and ML-1250 models: despite similar dimensions and weight, the first of them is a GDI printer, while the new product is still a full-fledged model with support for the PCL6 language, which immediately shows The printer's capabilities go beyond the operating systems of the Windows family and guarantees operation under Linux, Mac OS and DOS. An important fact is the noticeable increase in print resolution from 600 × 600 dpi to 600 × 1200 dpi, which, in fact, moves the new product into a slightly different class of printers.

In a word, the clothes are the same, but the possibilities are somewhat different.

Accordingly, the ML-1250 is positioned as a model for small and medium offices, which, however, while the price is slightly higher than the ML-1210, does not reduce the attractiveness of purchasing such a printer for home needs.

Judging by press publications, new model, Samsung ML-1250, began appearing in Russian retail in May of this year. I hope that this publication will be timely, and our acquaintance with the new product will help buyers make a more accurate decision when buying an inexpensive laser camera model, now taking into account the appearance of the ML-1250.

So let's get started.

First acquaintance. Unpacking and installing the software

When unpacking the nice box, I found a set of printer, toner cartridge, power cord, paper output holder, CD with drivers, utilities and user manual in the form of a .pdf file, as well as quick guide on installation.

Preparing the ML-1250 for use takes just a few minutes: peel off the protective tapes, insert the paper output holder and the toner cartridge. As with any laser printer cartridge, care must be taken when installing this one: it is advisable not to grab it by the shaft or hold it in the light for long.

After this, it’s really a matter of little things: connect the power cable, select the interface type - parallel or USB, and connect, respectively, to the AC network and PC.

Now, after turning on the printer, you can print a control page by pressing the corresponding button on the front panel of the printer and you can begin installing the drivers.

I hope that the intuitive “poke method” used in such cases is clear: we will always have time to install the drivers, first you want to get an impression of the device in “ lamer mode "[Imagine, there are still people in the world who are buying a printer for the first time. :-) Jokes aside, but the desire to “connect and work, without shamanism” is the most logical and natural, registered in all potential hardware users, apparently from nature].

Ready for any surprises after USB connections cable from the printer to a PC running Windows XP, I was even somewhat surprised that after the short “tink” sound characteristic in such cases, no further requests for drivers followed: the printer, somewhat puzzled by the fact that it was not turned on for work , after a while it went into power saving mode, XP also went silent. What's all? Puzzled, I opened "Control Panel/Printers and Faxes" - indeed, the printer was there:

However, where is the declared PCL6? Moreover, the Corel Photopaint program launched for testing showed everything only “by default”:

However, even such an “express installation” (in a few seconds!) made it possible to print a picture with a resolution of 600 × 600 dpi.

It's clear. It's time to insert the included CD-ROM into the drive and see what happens next.

And again no surprised requests Windows XP was detected correctly, drivers and software were installed without any questions, and the desired entry was added to the “Printers and Faxes” panel:

Having received the first print and made sure that all the software worked without problems, I continued, moving from installing drivers to actually testing the device.

Installing drivers and software for other operating systems of the Windows family differs little. I would especially like to emphasize the possibility of installing the printer on a PC without a CD-ROM drive: in this case, just insert the supplied disk into another computer equipped with a CD-ROM drive and simply create a set of special installation floppy disks. In this case, the menu allows you to select applications of interest to the user: PCL driver, USB driver, DOS RCP utility, or all together. After selecting the required components, what you are looking for is transferred to the floppy disk (or floppy disk). The procedure then continues after running the setup.exe file from the first floppy disk.

Testing methodology

To check the print quality, it was decided to use already proven test sets, only slightly modified, modified to test specifically laser monochrome printers:

General impressions of the printer

May lovers of dry descriptions and dry numbers forgive me for some deviation from the facts, but I would still like to convey my subjective impressions of working with this printer. Now I’ll go completely lyrical: perhaps some of the readers will understand my thesis that every device that stays next to us for more or less a long time is involuntarily associated with a living being, or, if you like, is “endowed” by us with a kind of soul. We mentally beg someone to “not glitch”, we ask someone to move quickly, and so on, in the same spirit.

Among the printers that passed through my hands, there were also aristocrats, to whom you can’t turn except “Sir Tape Recorder” :-); there were capricious bullies with a pretense of complete knowledge of the instructions, plus every day they gave out a “pack” of their own undocumented whims; There were also “diseases” that required constant care and attention, but one didn’t dare shoot them. Well, printers: you still get goosebumps when you think about the Tefal kettle standing in the kitchen, which, as it turns out, “always thinks about you.” :-)

The “character” of the ML-1250, after a month of observing its “behavior,” evokes very warm feelings. Simplicity, and at the same time practicality of the design, thought out to the smallest detail, paper that has never been chewed, and constant readiness for battle allow us to define the “character” of the printer as “our own”, friendly. Even when a fairly complex page with mixed graphics is sent to print, the encouraging wink of the green Data LED on the front panel seems to say: “Everything will be OK. Don’t look at how small I am and don’t be distracted from your work, everything will be ready now.”

Okay, lyrics aside. A few words about the design features. As mentioned above, in the TTX model, it is possible to increase the printer memory capacity up to 68 MB. This is done very simply: by turning the printer upside down, you can find a small metal plate covering the 72-pin SIMM slot. A 64 MB 72-pin 5V non-parity 60ns EDO SIMM can be added to the existing 4MB of onboard memory. Less capacious modules can be inserted with the same success, if there is a desire and a need.

The printer's visual menu, located on the front panel, informs the user about an error or lack of paper in the input tray; the "Toner saving mode" indicator button informs about the toner saving mode being turned on/off, the "Cancel/Repeat printing" button allows you, accordingly, not to waste toner on a obviously unsuccessful page that has already been printed from a PC, or to print the last page supplied; Functional purpose of the "Print" button test page" is clear without my comments. However, the button is also used to control the manual paper feed mode.

About the paper. The recommendations here are standard: do not push crumpled, damp paper with paper clips and other nasty things into the machine that can damage the inside of the printer; Do not use wrapping, embossed paper, cardboard or other media heavier than 163 gsm. m. In a word, mutual politeness: you do not feed the printer garbage, it is cheerful and always ready to help you.

The purpose of the slot at the bottom of the printer's front panel is not only to allow the user to choose whether to collect printed sheets in the top tray or lay everything out directly on the table. First, using slot output can improve print quality on thick (over 90 gsm) paper, labels, envelopes and stickers; secondly, when exiting through the slot, the sheets are folded face up, and accordingly, they are sorted in the reverse order. Not for everybody.

Printing process

In a separate paragraph I would like to describe the settings and impressions of the printer printing process.

A few words about toner save mode. It is set in two ways: programmatically, through the "Print Settings" menu, or with a button on the front panel of the printer. Let me jump ahead a little: the test results showed that it is very difficult to visually distinguish between an “economical” and a “normal” print. By the way, experiments with enabling both software and hardware toner saving modes did not lead to anything special; the savings turned out to be at the “single” level.

A little about printing in DOS. To do this, use the Remote Control Panel (RCP) program that comes with the printer. The utility allows you to configure print settings, select the size and type of paper, margins; print quality, select one of the built-in fonts and its size, set the encoding. The “Cancel/Redo Print” button takes on additional meaning when printing from DOS, since it allows you to “resend” a page that was not printed for some reason (for example, due to a jammed page).

The printer's print settings menu is very extensive. The "Paper" tab allows you to set the number of output copies (up to 999), paper orientation, size, manual or automatic feed without the participation of the application.

The "Graphics" tab, in addition to setting the print resolution, setting the toner saving mode, selecting the graphics output mode (vector / raster) and the halftone output method (set by device / fine / coarse / line), also allows you to use SRT technology (anti-aliasing technology) resolution) select the best mode for smoothing the edges of characters and images.

Those working under non-specialized applications will really like the “Output” tab, which allows, for example, to place a document on the entire sheet area, display several pages on a sheet at once, or print a poster by dividing the image into fragments.

The following tabs are responsible for improving the output quality of True Type fonts, using built-in fonts, creating and printing “watermarks”, page headers and footers (called “page overlays” in the instructions for some reason), that is, all sorts of fine settings and printing convenience.

Separately, about the instructions supplied with the printer. The fact that the kit contains a Russian-language version is, if I’m not mistaken, a standard requirement of laws regulating trade in our country. The undoubted advantage of the instructions is the high-quality translation and detail of the material presented, whether this concerns the OS settings for using the printer to work in network group, descriptions of conceivable and inconceivable malfunctions and methods for eliminating them, etc. What is worth at least a detailed FAQ on using a device with a USB interface or instructions on installing drivers for Linux or Mac OS. In my opinion, one of the “most meticulous” instructions I have ever seen.

About printing speed. In order not to receive reproaches for bias later, I decided to conduct this scrupulous experiment according to all the rules: on the Internet, on one of the Xerox websites, I found the company’s recommended sample of 5% filling of a sheet of paper (sample in .pdf format via hyperlink from the picture, taken).

21 copies of the document with a resolution of 600 dpi were launched for printing: minus a dozen seconds for warming up and forming the first page, the result, so to speak, of “pure races” was 138 seconds, which gives us about 4.9 s per sheet, or approximately 12 ,4 pages per minute. I agree, the test is quite “synthetic”, but to confirm what the manufacturer claims maximum speed printing, I think, is sufficient.

It took me about 45 seconds to print a test page during a “cold start” (the printer cooled down overnight with the power off, turned on while fully warmed up), and about 20 seconds to print the first page when the printer was brought out of standby mode.

The next test was to print a mixed document with raster graphics and text. The best option For this purpose, I found a printout of the 138-page “Samsung ML-1250 Laser Printer User Manual.” Printing went quite quickly until a page with graphics came across, at such moments the printer “thought,” sometimes even for 10 × 15 seconds. However, I think it would be sadistic to demand more speed from 4 MB of memory.

Printing a test with a set of vector and raster graphics with a resolution of 1200 dpi took 38 and 18 seconds, respectively, when resuming from standby mode and with normal output.

At the end of the introductory part, I will insert a few words about the PCL language.

PCL, or Printer Control Language, was developed by Hewlett-Packard and is actually a Page Description Language (PDL) that supports scalable font technology: PostScript (from Adobe), TrueType (from Apple and Microsoft) and Intellifont ( from HP). The ML-1250 accordingly supports TrueType fonts. When printing, the printer processor generates a bitmap of the page.

Test results

1. Printing fonts

So, printing the fonts showed excellent results: almost any font can be confidently read, starting from the fourth point, sans serif fonts even from the second (in addition to the Arial typeface, Verdana was also run, with similar results).

The results of printing in economy mode turned out to be truly impressive: testing showed that if you work with a point size of 4 or higher, the difference in the quality of text printing is minimal and “by eye” is almost invisible. When working with regular text 10 × 12 font, in my opinion, you can safely set the resolution to 300 dpi and the economy mode - I won’t clutter up the article with additional illustrations, but believe me, this is more than enough even for printing official documents.

In any case, it is worth noting that all printed font material has excellent fill density, crisp edges, and not the slightest hint of streaks or other irregularities, which indicates the excellent quality of the printing mechanism.

2. Printing vector fragments

Alas, not everything is so simple here: if there were no problems with printing vector segments and figures, and comments on the above vector fragments, I think, are unnecessary, I couldn’t wish for anything better; then with gradient printing it’s not so simple. Although it performed extremely well when working with large fonts where excellent smooth edges and high-quality solid fills were demonstrated, the ML-1250, unfortunately, did not produce the best example of gradient grayscale printing.

Honestly, if I started by printing this particular test, then after it I would immediately open the printer and see if I had a cartridge with a worn shaft. Unfortunately, there is clearly a longitudinal structure of the fill, which cannot be explained except by an old shaft. But the shaft is brand new! There is only one explanation left: print drivers. Perhaps I am too biased and demand the impossible from a monochrome laser printer, but something tells me that the capabilities of this model are not limited to the current drivers. He's too good at working with fonts to say with confidence: " like this Gradient print is all it can do."

3. Printout IT-8 test pattern

I was left with two impressions from printing the raster image. If, when printing a small image (in the first case), overloaded with small details, there are no best experience, then printing the same image when placing it on the entire A4 page showed unexpectedly good results: despite the presence of the same unevenness in the light areas of the image, the detail is complete, the filling of homogeneous areas is quite high quality (please note that the above images are still enlarged, the actual size of the fragment on the test table is 20 × 30 mm).

Conclusion

We draw a line under the study of the Samsung ML-1250 printer. The model really differs from its predecessor in model range, Samsung ML-1210 printer: in addition to supporting the new 1200 × 600 dpi mode and the ability to work under a large list of operating systems, the memory of the new product can be increased to 68 MB, which will certainly have a beneficial effect on optimizing the printing process.

Despite some unevenness when printing gradient fills, I would not call the printer's graphics output capabilities "modest". I think that after working with this printer for some time, the user will discover for himself the optimal mode for printing mixed documents. In any case, the print quality of the font materials is excellent.

An interesting feature is the toner-saving printing mode; in the Samsung ML-1250 it is implemented in an optimal way, with virtually no visual loss of quality. It is quite possible that in most cases users will prefer to constantly use the printer in this mode.

Perhaps some part potential buyers You will be interested in the possibility of printing documents in Russian directly from DOS. An additional advantage when considering the Samsung ML-1250 as a potential purchase may be the fact that the printer’s hardware is Russified.

The delivery package is impeccable. Competently and detailed instructions, a simple and fast, without any problems, installation process of the device and drivers will allow anyone, even a minimally advanced user, to cope with the operation of this printer.

In my opinion, the purchase of such a model would be quite justified for an average office, where monthly printing needs do not exceed the 12,000 prints specified in the specification. By the way, the instructions describe in detail the step-by-step integration of the printer local network working group. However, due to its low price and, as a result, good cost of ownership, such a purchase can also be recommended for home needs. If a laser printer does not have requirements for printing photo masterpieces, but the main tasks are prompt output of materials made up of text, vector and contrast raster illustrations, I think that buying a Samsung ML-1250 would be one of the good options.

Pros:

  1. Thoughtful detailed instructions manual
  2. Excellent print quality for text jobs
  3. Excellent print quality with toner save mode
  4. Hardware Russification, wide selection of drivers for various operating systems
  5. Low noise characteristics
  6. Possibility of memory expansion
  7. Printing on semi-cardboard (density up to 163 g/sq. m)

Cons:

  1. Slow warm-up
  2. Ambiguous assessment of graphics print quality
  3. Slight reduction in speed when completing complex tasks
