The technical specifications table provides comparison data for two MFP models from the HP DeskJet GT line. The new line of printing devices uses ink of three primary colors for color printing and black ink for monochrome printing. Print heads in MFPs are replaceable. But they can only be replaced both at once, since the locking mechanism of the heads cannot be opened during their life. New heads contain a small amount of ink for pumping, which is consumed after installation. This relatively small value indicates that the device is intended exclusively for use at home. Even for a small business, a thousand pages is extremely small. But for the average home user, a thousand pages of text, and even more so A4 photographs, is a very significant figure. Not every amateur photographer can print that much. If you are familiar with modern rulers inkjet MFPs from HP, you are unlikely not to notice the similarity of the new product with other models. The fairly compact plastic body tapers downward, has smoothed corners and a neatly “cut off” top edge with the scanner lid. All structures supporting the paper at the inlet and outlet are completely retracted inside the case, so that when transporting the device nothing sticks out, protrudes or tends to break off. To the natural question of why the ink reservoirs are not built inside the main part of the body, there is an equally natural answer: in this case, the dimensions of this very main part of the body would also increase. From this point of view, there is absolutely no difference where a given structural element is located. In the subjective opinion of the author of this article, engineers from HP with this placement option were able to reduce the visible dimensions of the MFP, and not increase it. In addition, you can put something on top of the cover of this module during operation (for example, 10 × 15 cm prints fit there ideally), and this design also makes refilling the printer easier.

The necks of the tanks with rubber plugs that tightly close them are hidden from prying eyes with a plastic lid. It rises up and is easily fixed in this position when refueling. There is no lock on the lid, and it is not needed, because even during transportation it is highly advisable to leave the printer in a horizontal position. To prevent air bubbles from the ink reservoirs from accidentally entering the tract, the design includes a feed-blocking mechanism, the handle of which is located on the front of the block. But we will talk about all the nuances of transporting, refueling and operating the HP DeskJet GT 5820 a little later, but for now let’s take a closer look at the basic design of the device.

The black matte plastic from which the printer body is made turned out to be quite easily soiled. It does retain fingerprints, although they are less noticeable than on the lacquered surfaces of other devices. The plastic itself is pleasant to the touch, and the build quality does not cause even the slightest criticism. On the desk, the HP DeskJet GT 5820 rests on four tiny legs, two of which are made of soft material and the other two are hollow plastic cylinders. But this seemingly unreliable solution does not cause absolutely any inconvenience. The printer does not slide at all on the table.

To the left of the scanner lid there is a control unit with a small symbolic LCD display and nine buttons with very short strokes and LED backlight in the form of tiny, nearby luminous points.

At the back of the lower part of the case there is a connector for connecting the power cable. Like most other models, the MFP's power supply is located inside. Well, on the edge there is a USB type B port intended for wired connection devices to the computer.

To remove the paper tray, simply pull the rear edge of the case up. The tray itself will lock in its extreme position, slightly moving its bottom edge towards the user. It also retracts quickly: you need to pull the tray up and release it. A standard regulator adjusts the width of the paper, and a thin plastic lid with a spring mechanism holds it on top. Looking ahead, we note that, despite the elegance of the entire structure, it demonstrated quite good performance.

The receiving tray seemed even more delicate to us, but it also performed its function flawlessly. It is not made to move forward, like most printers, but to rotate first around a vertical axis, and then, as a second link, around a horizontal one. Interestingly, the input tray can hold 60 sheets of paper, and the output tray can only hold 25.

The HP DeskJet GT 5820's replaceable printheads are located behind two “doors.” The first is a downward-opening front panel of the case. It looks more like a decorative structural element and does not serve any practical function. The second door is recessed inside the body. It also opens downwards, but behind it the entire mechanism of the device appears before the user, including the print heads with a special parking space in the center. Note that the ink path is completely hidden from the user’s eyes even with the lid open.

Overall, the new product looks elegant and harmonious. There is no shame in putting it in a prominent place; the MFP will take up quite a bit of free space.

Taking the HP DeskJet GT 5820 out of the box, you will have to spend about fifteen minutes learning how, where and what exactly needs to be installed, connected and unlocked for everything to work correctly. However, we are not yet talking about installing and configuring control software. It’s just that a device with CISS requires some attention during operation. However, you don’t need to be a genius to understand all the accompanying plates, on which the entire process of primary assembly is outlined in detail and very clearly in pictures.

First you need to install the print heads. This process is no more complicated than installing cartridges, with the only exception that re-closing the head-locking mechanism, as mentioned above, will only be possible by replacing the heads themselves. They closed it and forgot about the heads until they were replaced. Unfortunately, we were unable to find print heads for this MFP on sale, so their cost remains unknown for now.

The next process will take a little longer. We are talking about filling tanks with ink. The plastic containers included in the package contain the following volume of ink: color 70 ml, and black 90 ml. Containers are sold separately, not as a set. On the official website, the price for each container is 690 rubles, which is significantly lower than the cost of traditional cartridges. The containers have a patented ink filling system that prevents ink from penetrating out even when turned over with the lid open. HP made a similar inkwell.

Ink filling process

To refill the container, you need to turn it over and, having opened the rubber stopper of the corresponding reservoir on the MFP, insert its patented upper part into the receiving hole. The ink will gradually flow into the reservoir. Not instantly, without splashing and inflating bubbles. Everything happens very carefully. As soon as the ink level in the reservoir reaches the upper limit line, the container must be disconnected from it. In this case, nothing will spill either.

When you first refill, one container accurately fills the corresponding reservoir of the MFP to the maximum level. But during subsequent refills, it is better not to wait until the ink level drops to a critical level, and refill in advance. It is better to refill the device later with the remaining ink from the container. The fact is that if air gets into the ink path, and then into the print head, the head mechanism will most likely fail. No one can guarantee that after installing a new head everything will work as before, because air may also remain in the tract. In general, the device will have to be taken to the workshop. Let's start with packaging and packaging. Since I don’t have a car, I had to take the printer home on my own, by subway. And the good news is that it’s lightweight. The printer looks stylish, there are no provocative or annoying details. The compact plastic body has smooth corners, all structures that support paper at the input and output are retracted inside the printer, saving space on the desk. The scanner lid opens easily; special recesses make it easy to pick it up with your fingers. To the left of the cover are the display and printer control buttons. The levers are mechanical and press easily. The build quality is not satisfactory, nor is the quality of the plastic itself. If the manufacturer had also removed the ink refill unit somewhere inside and made it retractable, then the design of the device could be called close to perfection.

Installation

After removing all foreign objects, there were two main things to do - refill the ink tanks and install the print heads. Here the instructions come to our aid (yes, this is exactly the moment when it is necessary to save it and not immediately throw it away). The instructions are written clearly, with pictures, so installation was not difficult.
The process of refilling ink is very simple, and you have to try very, very hard to get even a drop past. I even entrusted my wife with refilling the remaining two containers of ink, which she was as happy as a child with. The walls of the containers are transparent, so you will always know when you need to part with money to buy new ink. All container reservoirs are hermetically sealed, so you can move the printer without any danger of painting the floor red. Well, or yellow. After printing a couple of photos, I was convinced that the declared 1200 x 1200 dpi was really “honest”. The photos look bright and fresh.

In general, impressions of the quality of photographs and the printing process itself remained positive, the printer prints quite quickly for devices of its class (in the case of photos, everything depends on the quality and saturation) and there is no need to wear earplugs during the process - printing is not noisy. By the way, you can even print at night; for this there is a special “Silent Mode” function in the printing application. Of course, don’t expect absolute silence from the printer in this mode, but falling asleep while printing is quite possible, I tried it.
The only thing that alarmed me was that after installing the printer and successfully printing a couple test pages, he began to squeak. Very quiet, but squeaking. But while I was googling what the reason was, my photo booth calmed down. I took a break from the instructions and didn’t find anything intelligible about this - I still have a question for the manufacturer. Equipment and appearance

The HP DeskJet GT 5820 is packaged (in a shock-absorbing foam frame) in a rigid cardboard box with a picture of the product. In addition to the MFP itself, the box contains a bag of wires, print heads, a set of ink bottles, instructions, a software disc and a warranty.

The device, made of matte black plastic, is similar to other HP brethren in its niche. Small sizes, rounded corners, the body tapers slightly downwards. There is a company logo on the scanner cover. The elegant solidity of the design is disrupted by a strongly protruding non-removable block with ink reservoirs, which is usually located inside. All this should make refueling as easy as possible for the user.

Under the black plastic cover there are 4 white rubber plugs from ink containers. They are all marked, and instructions are stuck to the bottom surface of the lid - for complete happiness. The reservoir is made of matte translucent plastic so that you can monitor the paint level.

The printer stands on four small legs made of soft material: the design is quite stable, does not jump around during operation and does not slide on the table.

Preparing for work

We take out the silicone plugs from the heads, expose the contacts and open the “inside” of our MFP. Of course, you need to rummage through the mechanism carefully and precisely following the instructions: pull the blue button with the arrow down, push the heads firmly into place along the “rails” until they click, make sure that the heads fit neatly into the grooves. Ready!

Filling ink is even easier: there are even express instructions stuck under the lid. You can open and fill ink reservoirs in any order. We take the jar, unscrew the cap, carefully tear off the protection, pull the special tab, and screw it back. Now we remove the rubber plug from the reservoir of the corresponding color, fold back the top cover of the cap, boldly turn it over (thanks to the clever design, the ink does not spill) and lower it into the groove. We fill all the containers one by one: each is designed for a full bottle of 70 (for color) and 90 (for black ink) ml. Close the lid and fix the rotary knobs according to the instructions. Ready!

Here it is worth immediately warning that it is advisable to transport an MFP with a filled reservoir in a horizontal position - otherwise the ink will flood the heads and the device will be damaged. For reliability, you must first block the ink supply using a special handle on the front, but even then you should not turn the device over: air bubbles may get into the path.

You also need to constantly monitor the ink level and, without waiting for it to reach a critical level, fill the depleted reservoir: otherwise air will get through the ink path into the head mechanism and will most likely ruin it.

Software and management

You can simply install the driver on your computer, or you can go through a complex device authorization procedure on the manufacturer’s website for additional service functions, such as status tracking, consumables and consultations. In fact, complete registration can turn into dancing with a tambourine if you cannot connect the printer itself to the network. Trying to help the careless user, the MFP spits out sheets of instructions in batches, either in English or Russian.

If you can’t register DeskJet correctly in the online service, then it’s okay - the program will work as expected. Unless each connection to a printer over the network will be accompanied by an unauthorized printing of the same instructions (see below).

The basic software has a “Print from mobile devices” button, which sends you to the official website to download a suitable program - for devices on Android, iOS, Windows 10 Mobile and even Chrome OS.

Now you can try printing from your smartphone. Download the program: the HP website for Android (there is a version for Apple iOS) recommended the application HP ePrint, but also works well HP All-in-One Printer Remote. Then we go to the settings of the phone (tablet), select search for connections via Wi-Fi Direct, find our DeskJet GT 5820, connect and enter the password.

The print quality of the DeskJet GT 5820, both in color and in monochrome, is not satisfactory - the characters are clear, bright, do not bleed, there is no dirt, blots, color distortions or traces of uneven paint distribution.

If you care not only about speed and quality, but also about comfort in operation, then we measured the operating noise level of the device especially for you. So, in normal mode it produces, on average, 60 dB (for comparison: 25 dB is a whisper, 55-60 dB is the upper norm for office space, and 100 dB is a chainsaw), reaching 75 dB on rare peaks and dying down to 17 dB.

It cannot be said that this MFP is capable of replacing a full-fledged photo laboratory, but at home using it is much cheaper and more convenient than running around the city in search of a service. The choice of paper must be taken responsibly. And it's not just the size: our MFP supports A4, A6, B5, DL envelope and non-standard media sizes - from 76.2 x 127 mm to 215 x 355 mm. Density and others matter more physical properties depending on the goals. The manufacturer recommends, of course, buying its own brand, but you can also use high-quality analogues. The only difficulty then is to select the correct paper type in the software settings. And most often you have to do this by trial and error: either the device issues a warning, or the image turns out with defects, “striped”.
