Mobile operators

Skylink is a Russian mobile operator that until 2015 operated in the CDMA standard. To date, it has been absorbed by the company "", and under the Skylink brand, the mobile operator Tele2 provides cellular communication services in the IMT-MC-450 and LTE-450 standards. The company's head office was located in Moscow.

By 2003, the analog mobile communication standards NMT-450 and NMT-450i were completely outdated, and the question arose of switching to more advanced technologies. Digital communications in the CDMA format were considered the most promising at that time.

And so three companies that worked in NMT-450, Delta Telecom CJSC, Moscow Cellular Communications OJSC and Personal Communications OJSC, operating under the Sonet brand, decided to create a joint project - a CDMA network, which was called Skylink .

To make this possible, a redistribution of assets took place: "" sold 25% of the shares of Moscow Cellular Communications to the newly formed CJSC, AFK Sistema, in exchange for 50% of the shares of the new operator, transferred its shares of shares in all three companies, and another part of the shares of Delta Telecom » was purchased from OJSC North-West Telecom.

A year later, the state regulator refused to renew Personal Communications’ license for the 800 MHz frequency range, allegedly to free it up to new standards digital television.

As a result, the CDMA-800 network, operating under the Sonet brand, was closed. A year later, 92.5% of the operator’s shares were already controlled by Sky Link CJSC. The remainder was owned by the American company Qualcomm Inc, on whose equipment Sonet operated.

In the same 2004, the company acquired two more stakes in Delta Telecom and Moscow Cellular Communications, which previously belonged to the RTDC holding. And North-West Telecom CJSC “shared” shares in three regions at once: Murmansk, Vologda and Kaliningrad.

Since 2005, an active transition from NMT to CDMA networks has finally begun: EV-DO technology is being introduced, which significantly increases the speed of Internet access, for now - in the Rev A modification. At the same time, experimental zones are opening in Moscow and St. Petersburg in band 2, 1 GHz.

In 2008, Sonet CJSC, following the results of the board of directors, ceased to exist, merging into Sky Link CJSC. Until 2009, the active purchase of shares of regional cellular operators, including those operating in the GSM standard, continued.

At this time, a sorting took place, so to speak: assets controlled companies, which had licenses to provide communications in the CDMA standard, were separated into Astarta CJSC, 100% controlled by Sky Link, and similar GSM assets were separated into separate legal entities, and a year later they were collected in the same way into CJSC Sky-1800.

The company's management announced the launch of a GSM network in the regions for which it had licenses, but in reality the provision of services never began.

Around the same period, the Svyazinvest holding, the largest shareholder of the Rostelecom operator, decided to gain full control over Skylink. This was achieved as a result of a multi-stage redistribution of stakes between Svyazinvest itself, AFK Sistema and OJSC Comstar-UTS.

As a result, on October 4, 2010, control over Sky Link CJSC was completely transferred to Svyazinvest. From that time on, redistribution began within the parent company: First, 50%, and then the remaining shares of Sky Link came under the control of Rostelecom, and then the holding itself was merged with OJSC Rostelecom in 2013.

In 2014, a joint venture between Rostelecom and CJSC Tele2 Russia was created, and the full stake in Sky Link was transferred to T2 RTK Holding LLC. By this time, the relevance of the CDMA standard had almost dropped to zero; the more progressive format of the fourth generation LTE was entering the scene.

It so happened that the 450 MHz frequency at which the operator worked was also suitable for him. As a result, the operation of CDMA networks in the Moscow and Leningrad regions was discontinued in 2015-16, and LTE-450 networks were launched instead, all under the same Skylink brand.

This is where the operator’s story ended - in 2015, the JSC was abolished due to absorption by the parent company, and all that remained of it was trademark.

One of the reasons why the CDMA standard at one time could not compete with GSM was the high cost of the equipment. The Sky Link company even had to order special phone models for its subscribers that worked in this format. By 2011, their production was finally discontinued.

The reason was simple - subscribers gradually switched to cheaper and more convenient communications to GSM operators. In 2010, there was even an unsightly story: the Moscow Cellular Communications company tried to collect funds from such “refuseniks” under the pretext that they had not terminated the contract, but had simply stopped replenishing the balance of their RUIM cards.

The case caused a wide resonance, including due to the methods of debt collection.

Currently, the operator Tele2 under the Skylink brand provides services high speed internet in the 800, 1800 and 2600 plus 450 MHz bands. In the same regions where CDMA communications previously worked: Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, Tver and Novgorod regions.

The tariff line for private subscribers includes three offers, including an unlimited tariff. Clients can use roaming on the terms home tariff when traveling around Russia both in the networks of Skylink itself and in the 4G networks of Tele2.

Skylink was once a fairly large operator. Its coverage area, although inferior to its competitors, was wide. Over time, his star faded; today he operates in only four regions. And to be honest, it was he who became the first 3G operator in Russia, albeit in a different range. Let's see how Skylink Internet works today and under what conditions.

First, let's name the main advantages of Skylink:

  • Affordable tariffs - it acts as a kind of discounter.
  • Powerful coverage map - the operator works where others do not work. Its base stations cover vast areas.
  • Safety for humans is associated with the use of safe frequencies.

Frequencies of 800, 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz were always criticized - they say, the frequency is too high, the influence on humans is too great. And this is true, because no one doubts the harmfulness of microwave radiation from microwave ovens. Almost all stoves operate at a frequency of 2450 MHz, negatively affecting living tissue. GSM networks are no less harmful, although the frequencies and power there are lower.

Skylink operates at a frequency of 450 MHz. Several years ago, it used the CDMA-450 standard, which was (and is) considered secure. But he failed to overcome GSM operators. Over time, the operator closed its towers, remaining in the Moscow, Leningrad, Tver and Novgorod regions. In 2016, Skylink launched networks in the LTE-450 standard, providing high-speed unlimited Internet to the most remote corners in the regions of its operation.

Services under the Skylink brand are provided by the cellular operator Tele2.

Coverage area

First, let's take a look at the Skylink coverage map. Here we see powerful coverage in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, as well as in Moscow and the Moscow region. In the Tver and Novgorod regions, the coverage is torn, but each base station covers a fairly decent territory. Bringing Internet Skylink to your dacha is an excellent solution if you want to weed the beds, recording your achievements on social networks.

In their reviews, users were divided into two almost equal camps. Some praise the 4G networks from Tele2 and Skylink, others criticize them. The biggest hit comes from the slightly buggy Skylink H1 router. As for negative reviews, their appearance is quite understandable - the congestion of networks at one point or another, as well as the nature of the propagation of radio waves, is affected, which is why the speed begins to fluctuate.

The Internet from Skylink can be used in many other regions - these are the Krasnodar Territory, Rostov Region, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug and other places where 4G networks operate (and under the same conditions as in the home zone!).

Purchase of equipment and SIM cards

You can purchase routers supporting LTE 450 Skylink in Tele2 branded stores and its online store, as well as in Skylink branded stores. Buyers have a choice of three routers for Internet access:

  • Skylink H1 is a stationary device, suitable for home and garden use.
  • Skylink V-FL500 is the second stationary router, attractive due to the presence of a backup battery if the power supply suddenly goes out (this is quite normal outside the city).
  • Skylink M1 is a small, pocket-sized, battery-powered router designed for travelers.

The estimated cost of routers for the Internet is from 3150 to 3500 rubles. Check prices in stores and online stores of the Skylink and Tele2 brands.

Tariff plans

Let’s return closer to the Internet, or more precisely, to tariff plans. Skylink and its Internet tariffs excite with unlimited Internet. Truly unlimited with no strings attached. There are four tariffs in total:

  • Skylink S – 8 GB for 490 rub./month.
  • Skylink L – 15 GB for 790 rub./month.
  • Skylink XL – unlimited for 1190 rubles/month.
  • A day online – 49 rubles/day.

If the limit is exceeded, traffic costs 6 kopecks/MB for the first TP and 5 kopecks/MB for the second TP. But the activation of additional traffic can be prohibited through your personal account.

And here’s a little life hack for you - we buy a router with a Skylink SIM card in one of the regions with LTE-450 and use real unlimited 4G networks in other regions.

Good news!
Despite some problems described below, our company offers Skylink Internet connection in the Moscow region - even in those areas where it is not possible to communicate using 3G and 4G (LTE) technologies from Megafon, MTS and Beeline!

In addition, when installing our equipment, you (if desired) will. The average speed of information reception is 10-20 Mbit/s, which is much faster and cheaper compared to satellite internet- the only alternative in the absence of coverage from the Big Three operators.

Well, now a little about last year’s problems that we (thanks to close cooperation with the operator itself) managed to solve.

Recently, more and more Internet users from Skylink in the Moscow region began to ask questions about the decrease in the level and quality of the signal, and sometimes due to its complete absence. On the forums you can also find a lot of discussions on topics such as “Sky Link is closing?”, “Where else can you connect a Skylink modem?”, “Sky Link does not work,” have Skylink and Tele-2 merged?”
The most logical thing would be to look for answers to these questions on the official Skylink website (msk.skylink.ru). However, it seems that the administration of the web resource does not bother with such trifles. But on home page It was announced that the Skylink LTE-450 Network will appear in Moscow from July 1 (the year, unfortunately, is not specified). What prospects for residents of the Moscow region have to use fast Internet is also not entirely clear - on the Skylink coverage map located at the bottom of the site it is difficult to distinguish between “Current” and “Planned” coverage, and moreover, planning periods are not indicated...

Even more confusing is the optimistic statement that:
"...Skylink is one of the oldest Russian mobile operators, which in 2016 began providing high-speed mobile Internet access services in the modern LTE 4G standard at a frequency of 450 MHz. This technology provides wide coverage and stable signal reception even in difficult geographical conditions and remote areas...".
That is, it “started”, but not, as usual, from Moscow and the Moscow region, but somewhere else...

But not everything is so bad - future Skylink clients who want to receive “Fast Internet”, which is “Always with you”, can already order (in advance):
branded 4G routers at a price of 9-10 thousand rubles,
directional antennas for 2 thousand and
subscribe to the very favorable Skylink “Promo” tariff with a monthly subscription fee of 990 rubles until September 30, 2016. and included traffic volume of 8 GB + 12 kopecks for each over-limit megabyte...
(For reference: Movies in HD quality already take up 15-20 gigabytes or more).

Wikipedia’s opinion on the quality of communication from Sky Link does not add optimism:
"...Since January 2016, the operator's signal has been significantly reduced, which is why problems have arisen with the use of the CDMA network, the operator convinces that this is due to wear and tear of the equipment, but the network will not be closed... It is interesting that the operator himself claims to maintain lengthy and extremely complex repairs and it’s not a fact that the network will work normally afterwards..." (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Link).

In such an uncertain situation, what should the clients of this operator or those who are just about to connect to the Internet from Skylink do?
First of all, consider what's wrong mobile operator there are no longer any mobile communications on the market (only the trademark remains), so look carefully at who you will enter into an agreement with.
Secondly, keep in mind that most equipment operating on Sky Link networks is not compatible with standard communications devices. That is, if the 4G Internet signal operating at a frequency of 450 MHz suddenly disappears or weakens, you will not be able to simply change the Skylink SIM card, for example, to Megafon and configure the antenna to receive from another tower.

And it is best to purchase universal equipment that works, if not with all, then with the absolute majority of mobile operators. At the same time, antennas, modems, routers, etc. devices must provide maximum speed reception/transmission of information and work equally well in 3G and 4G networks.
Particular attention should be paid to the proposed tariffs. If you are asked to install LTE internet, providing a reception speed of 100 Mbit, with a monthly limit of 8 GB, then this means that such fast internet you will have enough for 640 seconds! It doesn’t hurt to estimate how much it will cost, for example, “12 kopecks for each over-limit megabyte” - more than a ruble per second, or more than three thousand rubles per hour!

However, in such a short article it is impossible to consider all the nuances that should be taken into account when connecting wireless Internet in the Moscow region. Therefore, if you are a subscriber of Skylink (or any other operator), and the Internet has stopped working for you, then just call our company’s technical support service and we will help solve your problems!

Today, many people don’t even think about how often they use the Internet in everyday life. Access to the World Wide Web can be for any reason: chatting with friends, listening to music, finding out the recipe for your favorite dish, ordering movie tickets, etc. Of course, gigabytes are flowing away one after another, and at a certain moment you have to think: what tariff to choose in order to save your personal funds as much as possible? For its subscribers, the Skylink provider, also an alternative operator of the Moscow company Tele2, offered optimal conditions that meet all modern requirements. After updating the tariff line, several favorable tariffs appeared at once, but “Skylink XL” is of particular interest - a completely unlimited tariff for free Internet surfing.

Briefly about the tariff line

We have already talked about Skylink, each of which is aimed at a specific circle of users. The company's clients will now be able to use the service of transferring unused balances of web traffic to the next period. There is also a “Day on the Network” tariff - with daily payment for services only if you use them.

Non-burnable Internet balances are valid on Skylink S and Skylink L tariffs. If you are the owner of the first tariff plan, you have 8 GB at your disposal every month, if you have the second one – 15 GB. It is likely that these considerable amounts will not be used up by you in full in 30 days, which means that you can use them (and, in addition, get new package) next month.

Along with the update of the tariff schedule in Skylink, the coverage area has recently increased. Almost 98% of residents of Moscow and the Moscow, as well as Leningrad, Novgorod and Tver regions can connect to the services of this provider. Now we can say with confidence that soon the Internet will work stably even in areas where there are no roads and problems with infrastructure. Difficulties in connecting to Skylink and purchasing necessary equipment, according to the provider, this should not occur.

Conditions of the Skylink XL tariff

Let's move on directly to the analysis of the Skylink XL tariff. It is worth noting that previously the tariff with the same name unlimited Internet operated only at night. Now you can use unlimited Anytime, paying only a fixed monthly cost.

  • The main feature of the tariff plan is a completely unlimited amount of Internet traffic.
  • The monthly subscription fee is 1190 rubles. Attention: for subscribers in the Moscow region. In St. Petersburg, Tver and Novgorod regions, a subscription fee of 990 rubles is charged.
  • Money will be debited from your account on the first of each month. We advise you to check in advance whether this amount is available in your account.
  • With the Skylink XL tariff, you can use file sharing services and torrent trackers without any restrictions.
  • From the starting month of connection, the cost of the tariff will be charged in proportion to the number of days remaining until the end of this month.
  • The tariff plan is valid exclusively with branded routers from Skylink. In this case, LTE450 technology is implemented, which means high-quality and fast 4G Internet is guaranteed. True, the provider warns clients in advance that in case of high load on the network, the speed may be slightly reduced.

Features of the Skylink XL tariff

In order for the subscriber to save as much as possible own funds, Skylink offered the following conditions regarding the subscription fee:

  • If you top up your account before the tenth of each month, your monthly fee will be automatically charged.
  • After the eleventh day, the cost of the subscription fee is not debited from the account, so you can decide for yourself whether to pay with these funds for the current period or leave it to replenish the account in the next period.

With this tariff, you can freely use the original Skylink SIM card - the main thing is to be the owner of the company’s router. The Internet with a 4G router can be used when traveling to various regions of Russia.

How to connect Skylink XL

To become a client of the company, you will need to enter into an appropriate agreement. This can be done without leaving your home, directly on the company’s website or in the brand’s office. When placing an order on the website, make sure that the information entered is correct. If you have any additional questions or problems, you can always seek expert advice online.

Having selected the Skylink XL tariff plan on the website, fill out subscriber application form. You will then receive a notification via SMS or email. After which the manager will contact you to agree on the conditions and clarify the time of the visit of Skylink specialists to install and connect the equipment.

Conclusion

“Skylink XL” is an interesting option for those who prefer to use the Internet on an unlimited scale: download movies, TV series and music, play online games, surf the network day or night. The tariff cannot be called budgetary, but for a fixed price you will be given a free choice of actions on the network, as well as high-quality Internet according to the modern communication standard.
